Beginning: Wow! Those sharks are cool!
Middle: Those sharks are very... flashy.
End: ***** THOSE SHARKS. - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Here are soem vidz, each of which shows something very differnet in Metisse:

It simplifies many things, eg. when writing two documents you move the mouse cursor between the windows and the other one is activated, even if it is partly under the current window"
Now, it's been a while since I played around with X, but isn't that how focus has always worked, or at least in some default configurations? I think I even remember the old TweakUI for windows calling that setting "X-like focus" or something... - riccohasdug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That's a very promising project. I look forward to seeing it mature. It's not fully functional yet, of course, but I'll give the LiveCd a try.
I don't use Mandriva or Gnome :( - riccohasdug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Here's Metisse, Beryl & Looking Glass running on one PC:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGnQTfI4Iqc - TiKoZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Digg needs a "demanded sections" section!
- Doorfingers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I thought they were talking about "Mattise"... oh well
- spiffytech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Perhaps you could link to the app's website, instead of a .zip file? It lets us know what we're getting, and with all the malware out there, many diggers don't trust random executables.
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I never thought metisse looked that good, but i welcome the alternatives.
- cablefish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was totally expecting Matisse's "Blue Nude" in 3D.
Probably best that it wasn't... - turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4matisse' paintings lasted longer than this website.
- lampshade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The best parts about metisse aren't even shown here. That kinda disappoints me. I once saw the on the fly custom menus part of metisse...wow.... that was cool. Not the stuff they showed.
When you can just make your own toolbar on the fly in any program, say gimp, consisting of like the 4 tools you use most often, save that, and have them reopen each time you open gimp... now that's freaking cool. - davidrools, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Henri's paintings are a bit lacking in the 3rd dimension ;)
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4anyone know where to obtain a ppc iso?
- stealthrocket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Cool to look at but it doesn't seem like it would be practical to use on a daily basis. Why go through the trouble of peeling back a window to get to the one behind it when you can simply alt ~? And, I don't mean to be short sighted but what possible use would anyone have turning a page upside down? Just because you can do something different doesn't mean its better than what we have now.
- Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I wonder if this could work with Enlightenment DR17.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4jexdawg: I was ***** those sharks from the first second I saw them.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So far, no luck.
Looks like Apple's move to Intel isn't so good for all the bajillions of PPC Macs still out there. Like mine, for instance, which was bought two weeks before MacWorld. OK, I'll shut up. Not making that mistake again. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Metisse doesnt use a 3D rendering engine.
just to clear things up
XGL is using openGL to render on the X server
Beryl also uses openGL to render but it does it at the window manager state, not the X server state.
So for example if you connected remotely to a box running XGL it would send all the data of the moving windows/effects as rendered on the remote computer.
Whereas if you connected to a computer running Xorg and beryl, you would fail to see any cool effects. Although you could have beryl on the client computer and it will render the effects from the remote computer.
But this metisse doesnt use openGL, insted it works similar to the enlightenment window manager except its better and more advance. It renders everything itself instead of passing it to openGL to render. This allows it to be used on older hardware, and even hardware that doesnt have a graphics card.
Whats next lol, maybe 3d desktops will be rendered by your keyboard? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if ( big if ) more development interest in poured to the CELL architecture then maybe some more PPC apps as distros get released. I know YDL is working close with sony to support linux on the PS3 so there is a chance
- bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yup KDE has is at an option at least since the beginning of the 3.X series. I'm not sure if it's X or KDE that provides that functionality though.
- sifeliz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OIC, sorry here's a better link
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/01/13/enable-3d-desktop-in-windows-xp-95-98-me-and-2000-with-madotate/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Metisse seems to be a 3D desktop like Compiz or Beryl, but it’s actually a different thing — it doesn't know how to render the back surface of any windows.
- zleilndka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Cool cool.
- CleverH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Me too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2useless
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wow that sounds maddening.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2But... Will it blend?
- Bahimiron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1...
Okay?
What exactly are you replying to? - marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1PCC STILL COOL! LIVE CD LATER! LATER!
- Bahimiron, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I'm pretty sure I know what 3D is.
Those are the three perceptible spatial dimensions of space-time, right?
Does this Metisse thing somehow redefine common understanding of Minkowski vector space? Cos if so, that would totally blow my mind! - MotionAesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I think Digg needs a 3D interfaces section.
- sifeliz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Why the diggdown? I thought it was a cool little app.
