- inactive, on 03/10/2008, -3/+51We Linux geeks don't need an apology. "You're still geeks" is a compliment to any true geek.
- inactive, on 03/10/2008, -2/+49Vista was the best thing that ever happened to Linux... developers developers developers
- Farik, on 03/10/2008, -4/+50How about a link to a mainstream U.S. media site rather than a ***** WordPress blog which crashes after 4 diggs?

- saxreturns, on 03/10/2008, -1/+32I find labelling anyone on digg a 'geek' extremely redundant...
- Phocion55, on 03/10/2008, -5/+36You just used Linux to post that comment. Welcome to the club!
- smacksaw, on 03/10/2008, -3/+31Now if only Ubuntu could spread out to the other outlying streets and roads...why everyone could be using it!
- sirhomer, on 03/10/2008, -4/+31It might be a little too late for that cheddarbek. Linux doesn't have a set deadline for world domination. :)
- sirhomer, on 03/10/2008, -2/+26You get a $50 discount typically for buying a Dell computer with Ubuntu on it. Plus you get the piece of mind knowing your laptop was tested with Ubuntu. You don't get that with the Windows machines.
- DontEatTheFish, on 03/10/2008, -3/+26Nice quote... Who said it?
- Spelvin, on 03/10/2008, -0/+21But how can I get on the interwebs without my AOL?
Does this seem like a similar revolution? God I hate the word revolution for this but I can only hope, and yes my Dad likes the "foxfire" I set him up with. - Kasot, on 03/10/2008, -3/+24The next release with Wubi will do the trick!
- shortyjacobs, on 03/10/2008, -2/+20Philosophic Fail.
- blqysmg, on 03/10/2008, -1/+18It's true! Since I dumped Microsoft Windows four years ago, I have not been able to do ANYTHING but email and surf the web. I did use the GIMP to edit some images, and Inkscape to do some killer SVG graphics, but they were just for web surfing and emailing, so that doesn't count. Oh, yeah, and I wrote two books using OpenOffice, but they were little ones; seventy thousand words each, give or take.
I also was able to use ssh to tunnel into my office, and support some Sun Solaris boxes and a few IBM Aix clusters; but that hardly qualifies, does it? Oh, yeah, and the big AIX boxes use RedHat as console servers. Neat, huh? That's almost like email and web surfing, but not quite. So you're right. Just email and web surfing. And watching TV and movies and listening to MP3's. - jefuchs, on 03/10/2008, -1/+17LOL! I actually DO live on Main St. and use Ubuntu.
- paintpro, on 03/10/2008, -6/+22There is hardly any savings in the Dell Ubuntu machines. Just get one with Windows and install Ubuntu as well. I use linux most of the time but I need Windows for games etc.
- YodaJones, on 03/10/2008, -1/+17If only Wordpress servers used Ubuntu and didn't piss themselves when 11 people hit the same page.
- plizard, on 03/10/2008, -1/+16FTA: "Dell only sold about 40,000 Ubuntu systems within a few months of launching Ubuntu pre-loads,"
yeah, that's because it was damn near impossible to find on their website and most people gave up. - jhshukla, on 03/10/2008, -0/+12developers!
- foodude, on 03/10/2008, -0/+12I tried the Wubi install with 8.04 beta 6 - flawless. Don't know about speed, but this makes trying it out / switching a lot easier.
- TheZorch, on 03/10/2008, -0/+12Nothing frustrates me more than to see comments from people decrying Linux and/or Ubuntu in general, yet by their own words provide proof positive that they've never even tried the OS that they are criticizing. Its like trying to be a movie critic without actually seeing the movie. What makes me even more upset is how so many people bitch and moan about the Terminal or even having to use it. Its like most of Digg's avid Windows junkies have developed a serious aversion to 1. typing sometime that doesn't contain the word "*****" in every sentence and 2. learning sometime other than what color panties Britney Spears is wearing on any given day. As for the Terminal argument, if you use Ubuntu you'll probably use the Terminal maybe one time if ever since everything else you need to do with the OS is done in the GUI (Compiz Fusion/Gnome on Ubuntu, KDE on Kubuntu, Xfce/Gnome on Xubuntu). Whenever I see someone bitch and moan about the Terminal I get this sudden urge to send them a pack of diapers. You should all be thankful that we live in an era where we have a GUI interface to our operating systems. Back in the day I used Unix, CPM and DOS. If the Linux Terminal gives you fits you'd be totally lost with a DOS prompt. Perhaps if you actually learning something about Linux rather than making comments about it without even trying to learn about it first people might start to take you seriously. Otherwise, by your own words you'll prove to true Linux/Ubuntu users that you're full of it and just talking out of your ass. Linux users have been putting up with this ***** for a long time but we won't anymore. With the advent of PC virtualization, Linux CDs and Wubi there isn't any excuse anymore why someone can't learn a little about Linux before criticizing the OS. There is no more excuse for this abuse, no legitimate reason can be given for it other than the fact that most who do put Linux/Ubuntu down and talk "smack" about it are the same people who don't know "Jack *****" about it. Every time you open your mouths you prove your stupidity to the world.
- saxreturns, on 03/10/2008, -6/+17On the other hand... WINE.
- jefuchs, on 03/10/2008, -0/+10Shouldn't be using it? But I've been using it for a couple of years, and it works great.
Q: When will Windows be ready for the desktop??? - inactive, on 03/10/2008, -8/+18The Var guy talks in the third person, buried.
- TheZorch, on 03/10/2008, -0/+10Linux users are smarter than Windows users. We aren't so lazy and spoiled that we bitch and moan every time we have to open up the Terminal, which is almost never. Every time I see someone bitch and moan about having to use the Terminal in Linux I feel like sending them a pack of diapers. Face reality for once in your ***** lives, Linux is superior to Windows and it always will be as long as its slow, bloated and full of millions of security holes. Drivers issues? What driver issues, I don't see any driver issues. I plugged my USB all-in-one printer/scanner/copier in and it worked without installing anything. Vista CANNOT do that. I plugged my Sandisk Sansa into my computer. Ubuntu recognized it without installing anything. Windows wanted a bunch of ***** before it would even let me see the files on it. After installing a bunch of programs in Windows it starts to boot very slowly and run sluggishly, yet I installed the same number of programs (easily) in Ubuntu and it still boots at the same speed and still runs at the same speed.
- smacksaw, on 03/10/2008, -0/+10Does Synaptic Package manager deliver milk, bread, roast beef and peanut butter in premade sandwich packages?
If so, that would be great for survival or just everyday shopping.
After reading your post, I'm beginning to think that my ability to make relevant analogies is a special gift that not every person can possess. - peteophile44, on 03/10/2008, -1/+11http://duggmirror.com
- Zurahn, on 03/10/2008, -1/+10So...
Ron Paul = Linux? - gandhii, on 03/10/2008, -0/+9The first step is to set your parents up with open source alternatives like open office, firefox, thunderbird, gnucash, etc. Then when they are comfortable and enjoy those apps more switching the OS underneath becomes a non-issue. Provided they don't use anything that is specifically and painfully windows or mac only.
With that said, there is a noticeable movement to programming things to easily run on multiple operating systems these days. I would suggest that things are definitely changing. - loudnobnoxious, on 03/10/2008, -2/+11I've never had a problem installing the latest Ubuntu on anything to be honest.
- blazes816, on 03/10/2008, -0/+9PBandJ.deb
- cha5e, on 03/10/2008, -0/+9I agree with you...it's just the whole "if it was true at one time, it must be true still" mentality that many people have. I blame the same for the fact that diesel cars haven't caught on in the US like in the rest of the world - Americans still think they're "dirty" so don't bother to go learn that they're not anymore. And, back in the day (like when I started on Slackware 12 years ago) Linux did require knowledge of how to use the shell.
- Arramol, on 03/10/2008, -1/+9Wine's made a lot of progress, but it's not a full Windows replacement yet. It's certainly useful, and the number of apps that have gotten the gold or platinum label in the last few months is very impressive, but it's not quite time to nuke the Windows partition.
- Ribbed4U, on 03/10/2008, -4/+12Therein lies the problem. Many people do a lot more with their computer than check email and surt the internet. This can be problematic with Linux. There are many things that won't work on Linux, even with Wine. As long as another OS is the dominant force, most things will be geared to work on the dominant OS.
- dracflamloc, on 03/10/2008, -0/+8Wow... such an intelligent post really proves your point.
- eatbeefjerky, on 03/10/2008, -1/+8I use Gentoo and I'm a geek. Now, will you please shut up and bag my groceries?
- cawpin, on 03/10/2008, -0/+7Dugg for the correct issue (in parenthesis).
- saxreturns, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6Can you define the difference? (Besides the fact that 'geek' originally meant a performer who bites the head off a live chicken)
- SniperGX1, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6Might want to say that to Creative, tho i don't think anyone over there is listening.
- blqysmg, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6I find it interesting that most of the people who knock Linux do so because it doesn't play all of the Games they want. I know gaming is a big industry, and I realize that many people only have their computers so they can play games, but seriously! Is the number of video games it supports the main way to evaluate an OS? If so, Microsoft is King, and likely will be forever.
I will admit that there is one (and only one) reason I have a hard drive loaded with Windows XP in my house, and that reason is Microsoft Flight Simulator. Whenever I get the urge to fly, I pop that drive into my computer and boot it up. When I'm finished flying, I take it back out and put it on my desk. EVERYTHING else I do is better and easier to do in Ubuntu. - webcrumb, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6sunday-lunch_roastbeef_08.03.09_all.deb
of course, you could build it from source...
(in addition, nom nom nom.) - thechitowncubs, on 03/10/2008, -1/+6Basically... yes.
- cawpin, on 03/10/2008, -0/+5He can't even use proper grammar. You expect him to be able to back up his comments?
- MasterFunk, on 03/10/2008, -0/+5Masterfunk doesn't like listening to people talk in the third person. He thinks it is very annoying.
- mossblaser, on 03/10/2008, -1/+6In the UK XP costs around 50 quid OEM (thats abt 100 dollars) - that money could get me two gig more ram, a graphics card thats twice is good, an extra hdd to raid in, a much better mother board, damn it could even get a pretty case. It does matter. Especially if the OS you're buying is stripping out the performance you're layering on.
- saxreturns, on 03/10/2008, -0/+5I realise this, and probably should have clarified that it won't work out for everyone... but it'll still be a viable alternative for some. Sure it's not great for games and certain other apps, but in some cases people won't need Windows at all once they have Linux with WINE. That's the point I was trying to make but I'd be the first to admit that I didn't really do it very well. You see the difference several cups of tea can make!
- evilregis, on 03/10/2008, -0/+5Alpha 6.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyHeron/Alpha6#head-315 ... - TheZorch, on 03/10/2008, -0/+5Vista certainly wasn't. Its ALPHA code that was pushed into Beta so an exec who was changing jobs to Amazon.com could leave in time to get his sign-on bonus. You don't see the Ubuntu Community, which updates the OS multiple times a week, screw users over like that.
