- totorototoro, on 10/22/2007, -3/+34Dugg for supporting more PPC Macs than OSX Leopard will :p
- MEchanicalART, on 10/19/2007, -2/+15I want a PS3 with Ubuntu :) ohhh THE POWER
- xkilleddestinyx, on 10/20/2007, -6/+17Dugg because Ubuntu kicks ass
- xOpifex, on 10/19/2007, -1/+9Can't wait to try this on my PS3
- mrblue182, on 10/19/2007, -1/+8its down... but no suprise, seeing how ubuntu was released today.
- schestowitz, on 10/21/2007, -7/+14Already down. Demand for ubuntu must be exceptionally high. It was also down in April.
People should have used the mirrors and torrents. - macromorgan, on 10/19/2007, -0/+7Questions about the PS3 version:
How optimized has GCC become for the Cell, and has this release of Ubuntu been compiled with the optimized GCC? I'm really looking forward to running some math intensive stuff on my PS3 as I hear the Cell can chew through math like crazy. But the early releases of Linux on the PS3 used stuff that was not optimized at all, and it ran rather slow (from what I hear).
Also, do live CDs work on the PS3?
Can I repartition my HD without formatting it? - MagicCake, on 10/19/2007, -0/+7I think I just might do that today...
- nstanosheck, on 10/19/2007, -0/+5Grab the PS3 version :-D
- kakti, on 10/19/2007, -0/+5I can only address your last question. You must format your harddrive to partition it for an additional OS. Meaning, you will lose ALL of your save game data unless you back it up to an external source (think usb harddrive). I unfortunately didn't know this when I partitioned mine 2 weeks ago and lost all of my save games :/
- inactive, on 10/19/2007, -2/+7Dugg, i will burn a live disc and try it on my powerbook g4 to see how it acts
- McNamron, on 10/19/2007, -1/+6Yes, it will. I'm running it on a 500MHz iBook with the same amount of RAM. Sure, it won't be as snappy as running it on a new desktop computer is, but OS X 10.4 wasn't a very good experience on my iBook, whereas the latest Ubuntu is still quite usable. Running from the Live CD isn't great, but an install to the hard drive runs fine.
- dreadlocks, on 10/19/2007, -1/+5Torrents are always up :-)
http://torrent.ubuntu.com:6969/ - joegibes, on 10/18/2007, -1/+5Will this even run on a G3? I got an old one for free. It has like 384mb ram; I don't know how fast the processor is (it's under 1 ghz).
- kakti, on 10/18/2007, -0/+4Agreed...gonna be doing the install tonight
- lucasmaximus, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3That is what the mirror is for, so the main server doesn't get caned.
- maci01, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3A pretty good resource is http://psubuntu.com/ .
- rawheadrex, on 10/19/2007, -2/+5Isn't that the point? I mean support. If Apple released Leopard to officially support G3s and slow G4s, they'd have to really support them. With a free open source OS like Ubuntu... well, your *support* isn't going to come from an 800 number support team at Ubuntu Inc., or a G3nius at your local Ubuntu store. You might get support from the open source community, if you're lucky. So Ubuntu can afford to *support* slower PPCs, Apple can't. Laws of economics. Now, if you're OK with receiving only limited support from your fellow hackers, I'm sure there will be a way to install Leopard on lesser systems.
Not in any way trying to diss Ubuntu. I'll be installing it in a VMWare image pretty soon. - finite, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3The web is great without flash, as long as you know how to download the vids from YouTube etc and watch them with mplayer. I know there are a lot of flash sites out there besides just the video ones, but I don't care about 99.9% of that crap. The real WWW (according to the w3c, and apple's iphone ads, and me) doesn't include flash. Interoperable standards FTW!
I am typing this from my Debian/PPC system with Xfce's transparent bling enabled, and I don't actually know if that would work if I didn't have an ATI graphics card... but even if 3d acceleration didn't work, I'd still rather use a f/oss OS than a proprietary one. If that doesn't explain to you why people are excited about a new release of a PPC distro, please see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/philosophy.html and maybe you'll get it. - inactive, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Think they only went to 450mhz on the G3's
- stmiller, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3It is not being developed by the community. The PowerPC releases are still done by the official Ubuntu folks, including package updates and security updates- the same as x86 and x64. What changed is that Canonical no longer offers paid tech support for PowerPC.
- ThreeDee912, on 10/19/2007, -1/+4Sadly, PPC isn't a 'officially' supported platform anymore, although it is still (somewhat) being developed by the community:

Here is a mirror of the torrent file, since the site is so slow. - DeathAxe, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Or you could try Xubuntu, I used it on numerous PowerPC macs, including some with 128/256 mb of RAM. It will be faster than Ubuntu
- formerssgtusmc, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2Outstanding - I'm going to resurrect my 1Ghz G4 12" using Ubuntu and see how it works
- kyrre, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2I am pretty sure you get a warning about this when you repartition. But I feel your pain.
- flammenwurfer, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2Will it be easily installable on the PS3? Last time I looked there was some weird procedure you had to do to get ubuntu to install on PS3. I don't have a PS3, so I don't know. Has anything changed? Is it pretty straightforward now?
- bedouin, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2People with older hardware appreciate it. I run Debian PPC on an old G3 iMac server. OS X runs acceptably on the machine, but not as swiftly as a trimmed-down Linux install. Choices are good.
When Apple ceases to support my G4 PowerMac I will be happy to know that Ubuntu is an option. - Asheron, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2Has anyone had any luck with an old ibook G4? I grabbed the PPC Desktop version but am having no luck booting. Even with the different boot time parameters. Any clues?
- arcticblue, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2MD5 sums... um, thanks?
If you have mirrors, that would be better. - Luigi239, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Just to specify, this is just the regular 7.10 Desktop ISO CD file for PPC and the PPC Macs (g3, g4, ext.)
The site calls it: "Desktop CD for Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) computers (BitTorrent download)" - kazamx, on 10/19/2007, -1/+3yellowdog linux is a great option if you have a PPC mac
- nobogeys217, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2sweet...torrent for PPC Live CD
- formerssgtusmc, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2Just go to Ubuntu.com - I have Ubuntu and XP running on my Core Duo iMac
- rockets, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Never mind, just substitute the "ubuntu" by "kubuntu" in the URL
- maci01, on 10/19/2007, -1/+3I had 7.04 running. You have to do a procedure (Go to system settings > install other OS in the XMB while the CD is in the drive) to install a boot loader. Then after rebooting, hit enter and Ubuntu will boot up from the live CD. Then click install as usual. Nothing fancy, really.
Being able to read Blueray disks, use the bluetooth remote and usable wireless internet are still problematic. However, my HDTV worked well and I was able to go online via ethernet as well as use a wireless keyboard and mouth (not bluetooth). The system is generally pretty quick but isn't up to par with a mid-end PC. - dreadlocks, on 10/19/2007, -4/+562f784d21efc7f558b4462c8bb64a39a4b9849bf ubuntu-7.10-desktop-amd64.iso 696MiB

- kazamx, on 10/18/2007, -1/+2yellowdog linux is a great option if you have a PPC mac
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Live version?
- rockets, on 10/20/2007, -1/+2Anybody has a Kubuntu PS3 link?
- bentheo, on 10/18/2007, -1/+2i had trouble downloading the iso directly, but there are torrents at the bottom
- Luigi239, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Ubuntu is based on debian, which would explain this. Ubuntu however is much more newbie friendly, and easier to install with the Live CD.
- finite, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1The default x86 PC version will run under Parallels, or VMware, or QEMU, or whatever.
- formerssgtusmc, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1yup...running form the HD - and if you use Parallels you can run OS X, Ubuntu and XP/Vista simultaneously
- nstanosheck, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1You probably need the alternate install CD to install properly. When you have weird video hiccups, that is the best bet.
- finite, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1I did take the Ubuntu plunge on my G4 iBook in 2006, but then when they dropped official support in edgy I went back to Debian (after v4.0/etch was released in April 07). Debian is great, but I missed having some Ubuntu packages around. So now, I'm apt-get upgrading the gutsy install I've got in a chroot... Best of both worlds!
(Yes, I am running two distros of GNU/Linux simultaneously, on an old ppc mac, without any fancy virtualization needed. Linux is awesome like that.) - SteveMax, on 11/11/2007, -1/+2Why exactly would anyone want it from ubuntu.com and not from one of the mirrors? Just to kill that server?
- maci01, on 10/19/2007, -1/+2I believe one of the cores isn't used when being run with Linux. The Ubuntu live CD worked well, although rather slow, possible because of 2x speed.
- Quilby, on 10/25/2007, -4/+4Anyone who wants to get ubuntu from ubuntu.com (and not from a mirror), should wait a couple of hours until the server load goes down.
