- Soldierboi, on 09/21/2008, -0/+5Actually, that was a pretty insightful read. I've been using Linux for so long that I had completely forgotten about the "mundane" obstacles such as those mentioned. Well done. I do hope that some developers are reading this.

Yeah. 'cause we all know Windows "just works" all the time. - kd420, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3Good article. When I installed Ubuntu for the first time, I went in ready to tackle the inevitable problems. It's a different perspective to see how someone would react when encountering the same problems, and see the best methods to help them. I personally think that on installation there should be a couple questions asked (maybe make it a "new to Linux" distro), to inform them of some stuff that they take for granted in Windows. I know, Linux is supposed to be "free" in the truest sense, but mp3 codecs etc. are almost a necessity to converts. The best way to get people to change to Linux is to first give them something they're used to. New internet browser, email clinet, office suite, IM client? Fine. Changing music format, having to use the terminal to install drivers? Maybe a step by step installation GUI would be better. But this gets to the heart of the question, if these people need the simplicity of Windows, and aren't ready to change over, should we make them? Maybe they will change when they are ready (it may take a few generations), and when they do, it will be for good.
- DestroyFascism, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2I tested it on my mom...
She loves it.
Some teething problems with open office (theme issue causing office to crash)
Some problems getting open in email from Evolution to Thunderbird. (Easily fixed)
She has since changed the theme, installed aMSN and changed her password. (Yes she used the command lines | whoami and passwd (whoami )
I love my mom :) - Scaryclouds, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1So do I. Tell her I said hi!
- motters, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Linux has been "ready for the desktop" in my opinion since 2006. The biggest problems which remain are graphics card drivers, but it looks like manufacturers are very slowly coming around to the idea that good Linux drivers might be needed.
- Heywoodj, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1A Linux with training wheels distro is not a bad idea.
The author did the install he should have added flash,A/V codecs, ect from the get go just to avoid frustration.
I always do when I want my converts to stick with it.
I still think there is strength in numbers.
That said great article with many good points. - Pnevma, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1Linux is currently ready for those willing to learn and wanting to switch from Windows. It is not yet at the point where everything "just works".
My guess is; in about three years or so, it will be. - Pnevma, on 09/21/2008, -2/+0lol, yeah. But when I said "just works", I meant the basic stuff... like those described in the article. The little things.
