- blumer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+115But will it use an open-source driver?
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+40The words stick in people's heads and when they see it on the shelf or a person's computer they'll think differently. It's like branding.
- Sparkster185, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36This is pretty cool, but in all honesty how many people (especially given the circumstances) will have any idea what Tux/Linux means?
- QueenBeeCassi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30@estvir: I don't think it's such a ridiculous start, I saw an article on the front page of one of the sections in the Indianapolis Star about Tux being on the race car. It was either Sports or Business, but it is getting exposure beyond the people who will see it on the car.
@GawtMilk: The Indy 500 is not Nascar, it's IRL, and there's a difference. - agrabob, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27Thats fine if you dont like the sport or believe that the exposure is too minimal for the price.
But face it: any advertising for linux and FOSS in gereral is a good thing. - merr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23Indy 500 != NASCAR
In fact, almost all of the NASCAR fans I know hate the Indy 500. - jaywag, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Microsoft sponsored a NASCAR Nextel Cup team for a race last season in a one-race deal promoting their Live OneCare service.
Not surprisingly, the car crashed. - theblooms, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19@ GawtMilk
I love watching NASCAR races, as well as the Indy 500 (most motorsports in general), and by your completely ignorant post, I GUARANTEE I am ***** smarter than you. - allywilson, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20@blumer
Best comment I've heard all year. - MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16It's not about the actual air time for the logo it self. The whole point of the Tux 500 project was to stir up news in the mainstream media, and it worked. I have already seen 2 articles on non-tech news sources that have talked about it.
- lillydreams, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15For some reason I really want to play Tux Racer right now.
- allywilson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Remember that open source relies upon its users, not a $75 billion piggy bank.
- yunus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15A computer geek confusing the Indy 500 and Nascar is about the same as a Race fan thinking Windows and Linux are the same thing.
- helios, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13The "Drivers" Roberto and Stephan both use Linux, as does Acceleration Marketing. Bob Moore personally installed Linux Mint on Stephans computer. How much more hands-on can project leads get?
- oscysss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9IndyCar is not Nascar; note the dissimilar spelling, and the fact that IndyCars have wings and no fenders.
It's a subtle distinction; certainly not as noticeable as a Tux graphic, but I think if you look twice you might pick up on it.
Also, if Tux manages to hit 250mph, he will INDEED become very famous, at least in racing circles, as the all-time speed record at Indy, back when the cars were fast and the race actually didn't completely suck (1996), is ~236.9 mph; today you can drop about 10mph in qualifying trim, and 15-20 mph in race trim.
Enjoy the race! - BlackAdderIII, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Let's hope so - closed source drivers can be prone to nasty crashes, and we don't want that.
- cecil_t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I wish I saw this article yesterday instead of 34 minutes past the deadline for contributing... I'd have thrown in a few bucks.
- cecil_t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Because racing is an insignificant portion of the overall usage of fuel, while at the same time racing (competition) is one of the largest factors in making engines more efficient. Overall racing is a key component that drives technology in automobiles.
Also race fuel is typically the most refined type of gasoline. When you refine oil, you end up with a number of different types of fuel in different quantities (it all doesn't just magically turn into gasoline). A large portion of the oil turns into the less refined fuels like diesel, kerosene, Jet-A, home fuel oil, etc. The lightest stuff is gaseous, like propane. - slasherx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6No need to digg this guy down, he's right. Qualifying speeds were from 218-224mph. This is on fresh tires and only for a few laps. Speeds will be down considerably. The straight speeds weren't 250mph either, not even close to it.
- morphir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Marketing concept: The linux car is the only car that manages to cross the finish line..... and continues to drive after finishing.
- s1owtalker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Go Tux! Actually, I was a big Nascar fan until Dale Earnhardt was killed "just going around in circles". There are 13 computers in my little old redneck NASCAR abode. 4 of them run Linux and 1 runs OS/2. Nascar fans may not be quite as ignorant as those who would imply that they are. I'd like to see Danica win the 500.
- sidhighwind, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Actually the poster is wrong. Its more around 220 mph not 250.
- rockets, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I DON'T CARE if it is NASCAR, or Indy, or your neighborhood boxcar race. You tell people about Linux at every chance. It's working. I personally have heard dozens of non-technical people telling me things like "Oh yeah, I hear that Linux is very good, I got to try it soon...".
So take your racing/racecar prejudices and "store" them.
We are there dude. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4*sniffle* well, at least we got Tux running. Hopefully we can do it again next year.
First time running Linux always has a crash or two, once we find the right drivers though, we'll blow 'em out of the water! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5i was at the time trials last thursday and noticed the penguin while i was doing my laps around the infield garages. another interesting race car is the AMD car.
- clwasser, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Blah blah blah Nascar and the Indy 500 both suck. Formula 1 is where it's at. Cereal bowl racing FTL
- strabes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4@cntrxfrstrm: I think you're confused. If you even looked at the article, you would have seen that it's a picture of tux, not the windows logo.
- cartwheels, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The tux car just crashed. Sorry guys.
- QueenBeeCassi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I was at the race until it started pouring rain, and I pulled the tux car in our pool. He came in dead last :( He was the first to crash (right in front of us actually).
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Linux car crashed somewhere between lap 38 and 50. I managed to see the side of the logo at the start and a distant shot of it after he crashed on abc coverage. Guess I'll watch number 7 now.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1what car in NASCAR doesn't crash?
Isn't NASCAR just another way of saying "drive with your wheel turned slightly to the left until your car blows up?" - djGentoo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4We've heard from billions of people about the audience being exposed to this, blah blah blah... It's not about that. It's about sending a message to the world. It's about flaunting our power in Microsoft's face. It's about showing them that we're there, and we always will be.
Gentlemen, start your installers. - helios, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1snivel, snivel...another criticism without an offered alternative ;=0
- lostcny, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1UPDATE, it crashed... please update your driver, too bad they couldn't close the session and start again
- CCmachined, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0thats made my year aswell!! roflmfao XD!
- dfwgreg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Probably won't make it very far . . . Penske will dominate again.
- Nesh, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Actually, that 236.9 is the average speed over an entire lap, a momentary speed in a straightaway might exceed 250.
- Battlemaster1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0With the current speed restrictions that are placed on the Indycars for the 500 month will bring the top speed down to about 230 mph or 235 when draft aided. With these resictions, the 236.9 mph will not be reach soon, especially in race trim.
- CCmachined, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0can somebody link us to the results/p0st them? there must be a website somewhere o.o
about Google: i'm lazy :p but i'll try it now - Phlosten, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Gurgle, gurgle....money not well spent :)
- ravencin, on 02/04/2008, -0/+0you should check http://daclubpenguin.com for more information
- threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1@GawtMilk
I thought that's who they made Deer Hunter and those style games for - djGentoo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Wow... For once, a Windows fanboy was the first person to say that!
- Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1I bet it came first, lol
- Sparkster185, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1@schestowitz & masterr: Good points.
- Breepee, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Even if we would be allowed access to the drivers sourcecode, it would require the woman-package to compile, and I don't see that in the Ubuntu repositories...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1sweeeeeeeeet
- Zeldafreak104, on 10/11/2007, -13/+2So, now are we going to start making stories about every time someone sees someone using Linux?
- syafthegeek, on 10/11/2007, -13/+2That is cool but I guess the driver won't know anything about Linux.
- Irenicus, on 10/11/2007, -12/+0Here Here, If this is news worthy I should get my gun out now to save me the trouble of living.
