- pHr34kY, on 10/11/2008, -1/+22Already running it. Not bad at all. Glad to see it's deemed stable just in time for the Intrepid release.
- betrayed, on 10/11/2008, -0/+19you need an excuse? i do it every morning :D
- dasunst3r, on 10/11/2008, -1/+18If you don't care, why'd you even waste your time replying to this thread?
- jvincent08, on 10/11/2008, -2/+18Woo! Another excuse to recompile my kernel :D
- Ymeg, on 10/11/2008, -1/+15http://digg.com/linux_unix/Linux_2_6_27_Released_F ...
Already on the front page. - serenityflexed, on 10/11/2008, -0/+13Actually, Ubuntu 8.10 beta is already using 2.6.27. The final will be released on Oct. 30th 2008.
- MattBD, on 10/11/2008, -0/+11Because the Linux kernel includes drivers for hardware. That's why a lot of stuff just works out of the box with Linux, unlike with Windows where you have to install it yourself.
You can compile your own kernel and leave out stuff you don't want, but to be honest it's not worth the bother for most people. Distro makers generally compile a generic kernel which should work well with most stuff. - atbnet, on 10/11/2008, -2/+12I'm sorry but if Vista x64 is bluescreening for you, you are having driver issues.
- Rolcol, on 10/11/2008, -0/+10I'm sure they'll be able to fly by version 1.00.
- loconet, on 10/11/2008, -3/+11Yay for ignorance!!
Adding a new file system, amongst many other features is considered "minor" now? Ahh digg, hard to believe your users had a clue once.
Read up : http://kernelnewbies.org/LinuxChanges - loconet, on 10/11/2008, -0/+8"I don't see much change for the user"
So all those other major changes are for who exactly? the developers themselves? tiny green elves? - mickstephenson, on 10/11/2008, -3/+11Its irrelevant whether its Microsoft's fault or not, the linux kernel has all the drivers he will need (aside from an nvidia, or ati module), and if it crashes less than what he has why shouldn't he switch?
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -8/+15I don't usually care but I think I'm going to install Linux over this unstable Vista x64. Seriously, It's given me 5 bluescreens in 2 months and locked up around 4 times, i think 2 of which it was explorer.exe but no matter what i did in taskmanager it wouldn't end....... Okay i'm going to stop that now, you get my point. (Still need Vista for compiling and testing windows apps though... especially 64-bit ones..)
- mclewell, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7I wish a had a computer with 4096 processors.
- taseedorf, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7no you are correct. That is what makes Linux amazing. If someone were to build their own customer pc, they could compile a linux kernel with all the proper drivers to make everything work flawlessly out of box...such as wireless, video, etc... even if they had oddities such as realtek wireless or other things known to have problems in linux
- emehrkay, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7How long does that take? *not a linux guy*
- mule007, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8I don't know where you're getting your numbers from.
8.04 has kernel 2.6.24.
Going even older, I believe 7.10 had 2.6.22, and 7.04 had 2.6.20. I don't know what the 6.x series' had as I never used them, but I suspect 2.6.18 was used in one of those releases, if any. - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+6Well It runs really good on Linux x64 and bad on Vista x64.
with my old mobo, Vista x32 worked great. I think Vista x64 has problems with my mouse drivers (Razer Lachesis - and no, i don't use it for gaming)
I run a NVidia GeForce 8800 with Aero usually on. The bluescreening isn't as common anymore, but the Explorer problems are really annoying. - RyeBrye, on 10/11/2008, -0/+6No way the compile time is only 2-5 minutes unless you are compiling a VERY stripped down kernel. If you are compiling kernels and modules, and packaging it up into a usable form for your distribution (i.e. a deb or an rpm) it can take a bit longer.
Using a primed cache wish ccache or something it might be that short of a compile time - but it's at least 10 or 20 minutes if you have to compile everything from scratch. - Junior612, on 10/11/2008, -0/+6You're right, wings have been a beta feature on penguins for a long time now!
- ism70605, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5On my P4 3ghz it took about 35 minutes for a compile, but the real time spent is setting all the configuration options. I better shut-up before I get flash-backs of the sprawling menus in the kernel config.

- fabriciom, on 10/11/2008, -1/+6Configuration (choosing drivers, etc) - a while
Actual compile time - like 2-5 minutes depending on your processor, memory and system load - dorkdork777, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5Drivers are built in to the kernel package - AFAIK - so that all distros based off that release have support for all the hardware the kernel supports. Nothing has to be done by the distro creators to enable support for what's already in the kernel.
*Correct me if I'm wrong!* - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4Agree with TonyCubed - I was just ranting because I'm starting to get a little pissed off and I know it works well with Linux.

Oh wonderful, there's a NAME for my plight! Now give me Linux. Even we zealots occasionally prefer solutions over explanations, and I bet nmnnotmyname feels similarly.
Changing operating systems over stability issues would be a fairly over-the-top initial solution, but it is a solution nevertheless, and if no others come to fruition...a solution in the hand is worth two in the bush. Maybe it's just me, but nothing pisses me off so much as internet smartasses describing my problem to me as if I didn't already know...usually taking a thread off the topic I started it for...finding a solution. - JohnFlux, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4PosedMagnet,
Ubuntu releases every 6 months. So you'll only get major updates every 6 months. The updates that you get inbetween are just bug/security fixes.
So just wait until Oct 30th, then upgrade to the next version of Ubuntu. (Or play safe and wait another month just to make sure any major bugs are ironed out.) - JohnFlux, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4It's a major release for people who have wireless cards that aren't currently supported but are supported by the new release.
- anksrivastava, on 10/11/2008, -2/+5Buried for being duplicate of a better written article already on front page.
- skootz85, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3You probably haven't rebooted to the newer kernel yet. I'm on 8.04 still and mine says:
uname -r
2.6.24-19-generic - Culyt, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3It used to be under 15 on my older Gentoo system. Now days with faster systems and multicores it shouldn't be anywhere near that long. (Anyone know if the kernel supports threaded compiling, normally its just a make -Jx flag?).
☢ - fluxion, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3on my p2 266mhz laptop (makes for a great vi-machine...heh).....i dont know. i let compile once over night and killed it when i woke up and it was still chugging along (thing was hot as hell and didnt want it to blow up)
but yah...~30 min on a core 2 duo with -j4 if you're compiling a lot of modules
these days im rather content letting the ubuntu guys invest the cycles instead (though for laptops i like to streamline it and compile myself. i dont consider it "fun" anymore though) - fluxion, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2maybe if i lived in Antarctica with one hell of a wind-farm
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2ah ah! Linux rules.
- RyeBrye, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2Yeah, the Ubuntu kernel locks down on a specific revision for the length of the release. 8.10 will be 2.6.27 for until the next release of Ubuntu.
This sucks rocks, but then again - you can always compile your own kernel in Ubuntu. I'm running a custom build of 2.6.27 that has some audio patches that are being merged in to 2.6.28 so I can get the SPDIF on my Asus P5Q Deluxe to work. I'll probably continue to compile my own kernel if I see worthwhile stuff being put into it. I don't know if I'll stick with Ubuntu for very long - but it does have some nice features under the hood for power users. - secrity, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2I have several servers with uptimes of well over a year; most of my servers haven't been rebooted since they were first turned up. Most of the servers that have been rebooted were either rebooted for hardware upgrades or Oracle RAC decided to ***** all over. I despise Oracle RAC.
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2Giga: I'm a programmer, and i have some interests in art.
- bipolarruledout, on 10/11/2008, -1/+3Why would web cam support have anything to do with the kernel?
- fluxion, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2i dont think ubuntu automatically moves you to new kernels, you need to explicitly install them (which is how it should be if you ask me). otherwise you just get updated build of the default kernel
- sirhomer, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2@mule007
I'm pretty sure that:
6.10 uses 2.6.17
6.06 uses 2.6.15
Please don't ask I how I know this.
:) - Junior612, on 10/11/2008, -1/+2Penguin .27 ?
- mickstephenson, on 10/11/2008, -3/+4This is an ars technica article, the other is kernel newbies.
- secrity, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Most people don't see much, if any, improvement in individual kernel releases. They don't notice that certain things are working better than they had or that the next time they plug in a new card, it will "just work".
- garrett2399, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1I think that linux is a better product than vista and I look forward to updating my computer with the latest version.
- secrity, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1I am running 8.04 Kubuntu 8.04 with current updates:
uname -r
2.6.24-19-generic - gavintlgold, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Looks like my QuickCam will finally work in the upcoming distros! I sure hope so!
- Thoku, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1I'm worried it won't make the intrepid cut as it has arrived too late to be properly tested. Similar to what has happened with new version of Gnome.
- Darkx1337, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1I wish my computer had 1337 processors. Then I could run a game server on core 1337, port 1337, on an extremely leet computer.
