- cowninja, on 09/12/2008, -1/+44Linux is the predominant OS in research computing. Take a look at the top 500 or any computer lab where science/research is done.
This article is about Scientific Linux which is a recompiled version of RHEL maintained by CERN, Fermilab and a handful of Universities. https://www.scientificlinux.org/ - hyperkill, on 09/12/2008, -8/+38Yet another great example of Linux's many uses.
- inactive, on 09/12/2008, -2/+31The dominance of linux in scientific fields is really no suprise; scientists don't claim copyright over their scientific discoveries, perhaps its only natural they'd use software where nobody really claims copyright over it. Some scientists regularly spend most of their budgets buying new hardware; the use of linux and the fact you're not bound by any stupid-one-device-at-a-time restrictions (ahem Vista) is a boon to scientific professionals.
- iliketowin, on 09/12/2008, -1/+27Well duh. If it ran on Windows none of us would be here.
- nickpick, on 09/12/2008, -0/+17You can actually see it running here: http://www.lhc-live.com/
- DteK, on 09/12/2008, -1/+15where in this article does it give you the idea that someone is pushing linux on you?
Its you anti-linux fags that are the real losers. Why are you reading a Linux story in the first place? Just to release your inner-moron I guess - georgeker, on 09/12/2008, -1/+15There is a huge difference between a Supercollider and your *ss.
NO, I don't f*cking care about your toilet , but I'm really interested about LHC and how's working - weeeey, on 09/12/2008, -0/+12A Part of it? Are you kidding? I have yet to see a single computer in our physics department which doesn't run linux/*nix, and I doubt they have any in geneva
- DangerCollie, on 09/12/2008, -2/+13The brightest minds, the biggest research projects are moving outside the US. And they're running on Linux. None of those developments are particularly surprising.
- inactive, on 09/12/2008, -1/+11Nope, and I haven't seen that joke 69,044,237 times before, either.
- Farik, on 09/12/2008, -1/+11Is it really a surprise that an open source operating system, which allows CERN to manipulate any part of it to their liking, is used with the LHC?
- svivian, on 09/12/2008, -1/+10Exactly. Everyone knows that Windows would never be anywhere near suitable for this kind of thing. Why is this news?
- darkened, on 09/12/2008, -1/+9It's official if man kind succeeds are destroying the world it was because of linux
- jsd8cc, on 09/12/2008, -0/+8Particle physics gives me a hadron.
- Cenobite, on 09/12/2008, -0/+7@FMVorenkamp You see that "Linux/Unix" section? You can turn it off, *****-for-brains.
- madwaxer, on 09/12/2008, -2/+9crikes! no windows server? ooooh... Redmond better send them some free servers to help them out!
(would brobably get formated and have more linux and VMs installed on them! - bliz, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6We might still be here if the accelerator didn't even get to start.
- arjie, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6Even computers on the grid got to run some OS, man. That's where the Linux comes in.
It's never 'Linux that does it'. As with any operating system, its job is to enable you to do stuff on it. - inactive, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6Speaking of Linux, I am loving IBM's new Linux commercials: http://tinyurl.com/IMB-Linux
- jaxter2010, on 06/17/2009, -4/+10Crap and I can't even get flash to run on linux.
- cowninja, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6grid has been replaced with cloud for grant money...
- ametory, on 09/12/2008, -3/+9Ever thought about the fact Microsoft doesn't have to point out it is used in research all around the world..
- dhughes, on 09/12/2008, -1/+6 If you had a Petafile you'd be in jail.
- DteK, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5how about some real time data
http://ab-dep-op.web.cern.ch/ab-dep-op/ - inactive, on 09/12/2008, -2/+7Linux can be programmed into washing dishes too!
- HonestAbe, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5Scientists often get patents on things they've invented or copyrights on things they've written.
- elitemrp, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5Thank god! Imagine what could happen if it was running Windows... http://elitemrp.net/art/lhc_uh_oh.gif
- darkmuck, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5This is very true, I'm an IT intern at a hospital/medicinal college (lots of research here) and I'd say 75% of the software used is open source and/or for Linux
- Erectile, on 09/12/2008, -2/+7These are all valid comments, but will it run Crysis?
- arjie, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5Wow, it must be generic comment day. And it isn't even related, man. The LHC ain't no desktop.
- SteveMax, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4Usually, the reports are written on Latex via emacs or vi. For most physicists, Windows is as useless as a headless, Linux terminal without X11 or svgalib is to a graphic artist.
- isntreal, on 09/12/2008, -1/+5omg what a surprise
- MattBD, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4I don't know if they're allowed to. You certainly aren't allowed by the Apple EULA to use OS X in nuclear facilities (odd considering they like to say how stable it is!)
- onnoot, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4Actually, you can see it running here.
http://gridmap.cern.ch/gm/ - aliem, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4no, but it analyzes a huge amount of data.
- xcbxcb, on 09/12/2008, -1/+5As soon as I need to utilize all 15 of my petabyes, I'll know where to go.
- sonasi, on 09/12/2008, -1/+5apt-get install libblackhole gnome-earth-destruction-1.0
- inactive, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Oops. I guess they aren't that new after all. Oh well, they were new to me.
- ethana2, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Mine was 2007.
- dhughes, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3 Thank you, I'll be here all night.
- aliem, on 09/12/2008, -1/+4flash is useless
- BigManOnCampus, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3If it's 3 million Euros then damn the Dollar has really sunk low.
- leerayIG88, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3let me just SERVE you some cake madwaxer
- Joh739, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Uhmm, I think you forgot the superuser's permission....
sudo apt-get install libblackhole gnome-earth-destruction-1.0
[sudo] password for user: letmein

- ethana2, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Yeah, I like the first one. It's amazing.
- dogstylee, on 09/12/2008, -4/+7ah ***** I just walked right into a Linux Circle Jerk.
at least it wasn't using Macs, there would be a full-on Mac Bukkake session -
