- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This is neat, but people need to understand that the current WRT54G (v5) is still extremely limited; it has half the RAM and half the flash memory as the WRT54GL (or the v4 of the WRT54G).
If you really want to run Linux on a WRT54G, your best bet is STILL to buy the WRT54GL model instead. - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The old WRT54G models used to run Linux. Linksys decided to save money on the newer models by switching from Linux to VxWorks, allowing them to cut down on memory and storage.
The custom Linux firmwares people install (such as dd-wrt) have hundreds of features that the default firmware doesn't; everything from optimizing the router for higher numbers of connections, to increasing transmission power, to running VPN endpoints. All sorts of neat stuff. You can even use your WRT54G as an Asterix-based PBX! - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So can someone point me to some screenshots or something that illustrates what the DD-WRT micro looks like? Also if all I want is a Wireless router at this point what is the advantage of doing all this?
Reality is, as limited as the VxWorks firmware may be, it's been working very well out of the box.
And yes I know about all the advanced networking features, I work in the Infrastructure organization of one of the largest financial companies in the world so I work with Cisco equipment daily. Just don't see the use for the "AVERAGE" consumer. - T3rry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i got one for $16 (if my MIR ever shows up)
- VanillaSlice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"If all went well, you should be running DD-WRT micro. If not, your router is still as useful as it was running VxWorks. ;)"
Thats so true. - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first revision of the V5 was still Linux based. You have to look at the serial number to know. It must begin with CDFA. If it has CDFB it is the VxWorks based model.
- dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it basicly makes it into a small, low power linux box, with wireless networking. You can add extra funcionality such as a VPN server which you would normaly need a more expensive router to get.
- tpv2066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wasnt gonan pay 30 for ajtag cable, when i could geta 54gl for 25 more. so i newegged it
- prankfurter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2pretty sweet, being I just picked up a WRT54G the other day for $30CAD :-)
- judsond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Linksys still makes a linux router though, the WRT54GL for linux enthusiasts.
- dialdn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have had this on my router for a few weeks. Solid and simple to install. I went for the VPN version which allows me to VPN back to my home network from the office.
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is awesome on so many levels. I have a v5 and the firmware has been incredibly problematic.
- lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2will it now support 802.1x? DCMP?
- RPharazon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Schweet. I bought a v3 or a v2 a long time ago. Aside from the usual problems, such as it being a bitch to port-forward properly, it's working beautifully.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just disable WEP and all should be good, don't know wtf the deal is but whatever.
- super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does any one know if it increases the number of ports you can forward ?
- Tyger11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And if you get a v3 or older GS model, you'll have 32Meg RAM to play with instead of 16 or 8, plus an 8 Meg ROM.
Check on the model/version features here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G
And then go hunting on eBay. :) - luke--, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is good news, the firmware that linksys was providing for the v5 last fall when i bought one was TERRIBLE, it was so freaking bad.
- jrhelgeson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just recieved my JTAG cable today, and wouldn't you know it, someone figured out how to turn my newly acquired JTAG cable obsolete... DANG, oh well, anyone need a JTAG cable? :)
- Karasuhebi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3do you guys know if any of that Linux-based firmware for this router allows me to have DMZ enabled for more than one IP in my network? I've been wanting to do that for a while..
-Karasuhebi - The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just brought a WRT54GL, AUD $122 or something.
I didn't need to wait for people to get Linux working on the VxWorks version, mine's already fully supported. - SanTe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2neoian wrote:

Don't know if you still have it but it is possible to recover a bricked WRT54G (unless you overclocked it and burned out the CPU). I bricked a WRT54G v3.0 during a firmware upgrade a few months ago and managed to recover it. Got instructions from Linksysinfo.org, although sadly I can't seem to find them on that site anymore. :(
If memory serves, it was:
1) hold in the reset button on the back of the WRT54G for 30 seconds,
2) while still holding in the button, unplug the router from AC power,
3) wait another 15 seconds or so before releasing the reset button,
4) plug the router in to AC power again,
5) connect a PC with CAT5 and static IP of 192.168.1.2 and ensure you can ping the router (192.168.1.1),
6) download the latest firmware upgrade utility (the .exe, not the plain .bin file) for your hardware revision and run it on your PC to overwrite the corrupted firmware
Worked for me.
Google "How to recover a bricked WRT54G" to find lots of discussion on the subject. - Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Linux on my V5 WRT54G works farily well, still buggy, but with time I hope this will become a really good way to get more for your money.

http://tinyurl.com/8d6xu - Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome...I've been jealous of the older models, but not anymore. Just finished installing it. Looking forward to using it.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So I get a cheap router that I have to leave connected and pinging the FON servers in order to avoid an extra $45 charge?
And in return I get what? Thrown off my ISP for breaching their TOS?
Good idea, wrong place. Submit it instead. - tpv2066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1didnt work for me. I think im gonan go buy a 54gl like I should have
- jliechty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It worked splendidly after a period of intense tribulation with my WRT54G v5. Thanks to DD-WRT, I can now change the wireless transmit power and assign fixed IP addresses by DHCP with regard to MAC addresses.
Beware: my problems were caused because I attempted to flash from a computer that was connected to a switch that was uplinked to the WRT54G. Once I brought the WRT54G to the computer and connected it directly with nothing in between, the flashing proceeded quickly and successfully. - flex411, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't think it's for the "AVERAGE" user?
- dsouth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Karasuhebi: It's fairly easy to use iptables under any of the wrt54 linux distros (openwrt, dd-wrt, etc) to route different ports/services on the WAN side of the wrt54 to different hosts on the LAN site of the wrt54. So (for instance) html/web connections could be routed to one host and ssh connections to a different host.
- Karasuhebi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4What is the use of this? I have a WRT54G router and this seems interesting to me. I want to try it out, but I don't know what it is/does. lol
-Karasuhebi - relaxmax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Guys, you can get a Linksys WRT54GL or Buffalo WHRG54S for 5$ (I'm not kidding!). And make sure you ask for the Linksys when you join...
