these people must be saved! - BigglesPiP, on 04/04/2008, -4/+37The ASUS EEEffect.
- klco, on 04/04/2008, -1/+33I would also point out (if you look through the data) linux has been steadily rising a few tenths or hundredths of a percentage point every month they cover (minus a couple of outliers).
- djg38, on 04/04/2008, -2/+25Yes, so digg him up for the compliment
- daftman, on 04/04/2008, -3/+21So what? It is still correct. The percentage of increase is important when you are measuring it's adoption rate, not the overall percentage of use.
If something doubles every 6months, it only a matter of time before it caches up to something that increase only 20% per 6 months.
When you are Microsoft, you would be worrying about the adoption rate rather than the over usage rate.
They are not going to sit back and say, "oh well we'll wait until they have 20% overall marketshare and then we'll do something about it".
By then the momentum will kill them.
Look if it makes you feel comfortable rationalizing that Linux only stll have 2%, then go ahead. - djg38, on 04/04/2008, -0/+18The report actually links to last month's statistics, here are the current ones:
http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php - lieutenantmudd, on 04/04/2008, -7/+24Linux on the desktop is growing, but I don't think it will ever hit critical mass. I think the "desktop" will disappear before Linux ever breaks 10 percent.
I think the numbers to be proud of are market share on smart phones, on low end laptops, and on devices in between the two. I think the future of personal computers are in these type of devices, and I think most of the computer industry is smart enough to not turn the whole industry over to Microsoft a second time. - bherring, on 04/04/2008, -1/+17Honestly, as much as I like seeing Linux succeed, I find I really don't care whether or not it does as long as it works well for me, there are crazy code monkeys (like myself) willing to work on it and no one finds some underhanded way to legally take it away from us.
But, I was also an Amiga hold out too until long past the death of Commodore as viable company. So what do I really know? - SpeedSteamBoat, on 04/04/2008, -1/+16Somehow I seriously doubt the personal computer is going anywhere. They may not stay on the desk much longer, but PCs aren't going anywhere. by that same token, operating systems aren't going anywhere either, and I honestly believe Linux has a bigger future there than many people give it credit for.
- Shakermaker, on 04/04/2008, -14/+28Up 61%!
...to a total of .069% of all computers used worldwide. - dinostabOMG, on 04/04/2008, -5/+18Thanks for the refresher.
- andycr512, on 04/04/2008, -8/+21Funny that Windows people need to rely on misleading names like "Genuine Advantage" to force crap people don't want down their collective throats.
- vibrokatana, on 04/04/2008, -0/+10nimp.org is a known spam site that locks up your browser.
- theWrkncacnter, on 04/04/2008, -1/+11I want more people to use it so companies will start writing drivers and games with linux binaries.
just not enough so that it gets viruses - imitokay, on 04/04/2008, -0/+9Im glad to see linux suceed, ... I don't think more competition is ever bad
with that said, I tried me some ubuntu, but I just can't find the energy to adopt if for every day life, ... probably because I use a lot of engineering programs (solid works, pro e, matlab etc etc) that I dont even think will work, ... but if they due feel free to let me know! - inactive, on 04/04/2008, -2/+11Dugg for increasing my self-confidence, I am a stud.
- imitokay, on 04/04/2008, -3/+11I wonder if you can even make out linux on a pie graph :p
- knightmarex, on 04/04/2008, -3/+10"Windows Vista 6.93%"
these people must be saved! - ptFoe, on 04/04/2008, -1/+7here is the original story on Digg
The cnet guy is ripping my comments off
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Linux_Cracks_2_of_the_m ... - chowmeined, on 04/04/2008, -0/+6The developer of that software has some work to do.
- ptFoe, on 04/04/2008, -0/+6This is ***** awesome news. If it can get to 5% software developers will have to take notice.
- daftman, on 04/04/2008, -0/+6Bring on the viruses. You will see thousands of people around the world working around the clock as soon as one virus is detected.
- orangefly, on 04/04/2008, -3/+9go back to vista and use half the ram you paid for..........tool....
- mefistosan, on 04/04/2008, -0/+6As far as I'm concerned, installing linux on my laptop has been the best decision I have ever made. Since september of the past year I installed kubuntu gutsy and since then everything's working as smooth as it was from the beginning.
And the best part: no viruses and lots of stability. That's priceless. - pilobilus, on 04/04/2008, -0/+5Since the vast bulk of Linux installations are free, "market share" has a fundamentally different meaning than for commercial ventures. In the Linux world, all we actually want is a critical mass sufficient to keep the developer communities and sponsored projects strong and growing. Linux "won" years ago, by every metric that matters: Utility, security, stability, scalability, and total cost of ownership.
- frontporsche, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6Well, it's catching up to those 552 Vista users.
- pilobilus, on 04/04/2008, -0/+5The "year of Linux on the desktop" is the year YOU reformat your last NTFS filesystem to reclaim the space for storage.
- cwgannon, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6That's more a lack of reading comprehension.
"Linux desktop share is up as much as 61 percent."
v
"Linux desktop share is up to as much as 61 percent."
I trust you can see the difference. Why you overlooked it and and thus mistook the headline is not something we should have to deal with you getting all pissy about. - inactive, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6Windows sucks, get over it. Microsoft has learnt to accept this, why can't you?
- inactive, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6interesting how low vista still is.
i think it's a lot related to hardware stagnation. it's almost 2 years that there is no major advancement is processing speed technology. a machine 3 or 4 years newer isn't that spectacularly faster. In the 90s, 2 years was huge. - Acglaphotis, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6When linux is mainstream, will us geeks have to move on to BSD?
- DonSlice, on 04/04/2008, -2/+7Sorry, I think he's calling Linux a stud.
- orangefly, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6go back to vista and use half the ram you paid for..........tool....
- sirhomer, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6You can run Microsoft Office (even 2007), iTunes, and a wide variety of games under Wine.
- chowmeined, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6I disagree with your statement that Linux wasn't designed for games. There is nothing about Linux that means you can't write games for it. Linux has full support for 3d hardware, OpenGL, there are a even quite a few 3d engines available for free use (OGRE is one I know of). And as proof that games work perfectly fine (or even better) than on windows, look at some of the native Linux games available, Unreal Tournament, Doom 3, Quake 3/4, Neverwinter Nights, and on top of that you can play games through wine, its not perfect but some games that are known to run very well are World of Warcraft, Warcraft 3.. actually all the Blizzard games, Half Life 2, Portal.. actually most of the Valve games, and there are a bunch more. The issue is game developers have a bit of trouble with the observed market size of Linux, its sort of a chicken and egg issue, game developers don't see the value in making games for linux until the gamers are there, and gamers won't move to linux until they can play their games. There is a solution, if game developers take advantage of the advanced game engines they are already paying for, a lot of them are already cross-platform, if they just put in a little bit more effort they can get their games running on linux.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 04/04/2008, -0/+5We're talking about 2.02% of all personal computers used to access the internet so you do the math.
- Daniel591992, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6Almost half of OSX. Not bad, but there is still a long way.
- svensko, on 04/04/2008, -3/+8Offce = open office
iTunes = GTKpod (okay, you can't buy music from iTunes but who does?)
Games = UT2004, warsow, tremulous, quakeworld, urban terror, quake 3...
No, Linux can't run crysis but that isn't what it was made for. People DO use computers for productive things. - daftman, on 04/04/2008, -3/+8> Windows *people* have nothing to do with WGA. Microsoft does that.
By buying into that crap, they already have something to do with it.
Kinda sound hypocritical when an oil company's shareholder blames the oil company for doing shady things. - RoboDonut, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6Buried because the article links back to digg.
Why the hell are we digging articles about digg stories about other articles that link to a chart at the W3C?
It's just too absurd. - nathron, on 04/04/2008, -0/+5i dugg the story cause it made me feel pretty
- ninja0, on 04/04/2008, -2/+7I use linux: Gentoo, and ubuntu... and I have 1 windows XP box, that is designated for games. All my surfing and multimedia is done in linux. Lets see, in my house....
I use linux... my sister uses it... my brother uses it... and so do my mom and dad.
My aunt uses linux, one of my best friends uses linux, my GRANDMA USES LINUX. At first, they were all like WOAH! hold on there... I don't like this. But after a few weeks, they don't even look back at windows.
Linux is growing, and I believe it will continue to grow. Especially because of all the effort the ubuntu team is putting into it. - daftman, on 04/04/2008, -1/+5Guess what? Unlike Packard Bell, Linux isn't a company. So despite those who are burnt by it, Linux isn't going to go bankrupt and still progress at it's own pace. Even when the stockmarket crash, Linux is still going to progress
- daftman, on 04/04/2008, -0/+4Here here.
Credit should be where credit is due - orangefly, on 04/04/2008, -1/+5go back to vista and use half the ram you paid for..........tool....
- inactive, on 04/04/2008, -0/+4Video games drove me back to Windows. I want video games on Linux.
- bsmang, on 04/04/2008, -1/+5So there are around 6000 XP users then?
- SenorCardgage74, on 04/04/2008, -0/+4I think he was calling Night Man a stud.
But the spirit of Night Man has come inside you, so in a way....sure. - daftman, on 04/04/2008, -2/+6go away troll. Posting ***** 3 times doesn't mean you have a point.
