- wandm, on 06/28/2008, -0/+7Good list, I hope some Ubuntu developers take note. I've used Kubuntu 8.04 for a while and have noticed a GRUB bug and that Firefox stalls once in a while and consumes most of the memory. Apparently this is the IPv4/IPv6 bug, but I never thought of it.
But the story should not be exaggerated, I still think Ubuntu is overall the best distribution to start with, if one is interested in Linux. Generally, solution to any problem can be quickly found from http://ubuntuforums.org/. openSUSE is my other favourite Linux distro. - serenityflexed, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Most of the points are pretty valid: IPv6 is slow, suspend is broken, GRUB needs an update. But email integration isn't needed for IMAP (read:gmail) and I havn't had problems with my screen res. since feisty.
"Sound under Linux is a bit of a mess." -- now that's an understatement: pulseaudio in Ubuntu 7.04 was a mistake as far as I'm concerned. it's more than a mess, it's a disaster. Just check the forums: it skips; it breaks and produces sound from your P.C Speaker, *By Default*.
By the way, I am a fan of pulseaudio, great network features but it has a ways to go, and I hope it gets there. It most certainly should not have been enabled so early. I'll say it again: it was a mistake. - 4DFX, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1I never understood why Linux users should be the first to use IPv6. It won't stop the inevitable drainage of the IPv4 IPs. ***** that. Microsoft has the majority of users, let them take care of this.
- courtjester555, on 06/29/2008, -1/+1Agreed about power and hibernation. Even when I updated to 8.04, suspend was a no-go. It was only after a fresh install of Hardy that it worked properly. About GRUB though...I know a lot of other distros use it. If I were to install another distro that used GRUB but Ubuntu was using Smart Boot Loader, would there be an issue?
Also, "pet niggle"? Read hastily, that could be enormously racist. "Pet peeve" would be the way to go methinks.
