- dude187, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Did you have a point, or do you just feel like knocking religion?
- satansbanjo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17It doesn't actually reinstall after 3 days - that was a joke
- packetlock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16wtfdaemon,
Way to show resentment to something you don't understand. This is the beauty of open source. Others can create something what meets their needs. I also find amusement that they can create a distro like this and laugh at them selves. Like their Slogan says “The goal of Ubuntu Christian Edition is not to bring Christianity to Linux but to bring Linux to Christians.” I think I can respect that. - HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Christian edition? Who'd a' thunk it? Sounds good though.
From the article, "Ubuntu Christian Edition also includes fully integrated web content parental controls powered by Dansguardian.".
I'm gonna try that on my kid's computer. - ricree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If I had to guess, I'd say that it is probably meant to be installed in/handed out at churches. They may not necessarily have access to tech savvy people, and by making a version that has the religious content set up correctly by default it will be easy for their target base. Personally, I think it's a great idea, but of course it isn't exactly aimed at the average digg user.
- ray901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Ok, enough about Flash demos, Flash screenshots etc..
When is it going to be released? - that is the important question, and one that no-one seems to be able to answer. - doyadigg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11some people treat the GPL as a religion so it's only natural that this came along.
- ray901, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I agree with you, there is a thread on the Ubuntu Forum about it. (started by the originator of Christian Ubuntu).
Several people suggested just what you say - a meta pack rather than a full blown distro. I got the feeling that the originator really wanted it to be special, it was important to him to have a seperate Ubuntu. That was just my take on it anyway....
The beer lovers ubuntu - now that has a nice ring to it - yeehawjared, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Dansguardian can be installed on any flavor of Ubuntu, there are a ton of HOWTO's on ubuntuforums.org
- dogred, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Ubuntu Christian Edition...ironic, since linux is an evolving chunk of code.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'm glad Adobe did this for linux. It will be good for them as well. Flash 9 being absent from linux prevented some high demand features from working on linux. Sooner or later that would have led to an "open flash" project being started. By giving us Flash 9 Adobe prevented that.....they retain control.
Now, when can I get my copy? :-) - dogred, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10and it probably won't cost much, or would be negotiable
- fak3r, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I've read about the Christian Edition, here's what the article has about it:
"Along with the standard Ubuntu applications, Ubuntu Christian Edition includes the best available Christian software. The latest release contains GnomeSword, a top of the line Bible study program for Linux based on the Sword Project. There are several modules installed with GnomeSword including Bibles, Commentaries, and Dictionaries.
Ubuntu Christian Edition also includes fully integrated web content parental controls powered by Dansguardian. A graphical tool to adjust the parental control settings has also been developed specifically for Ubuntu Christian Edition"
So I see the niche, but why have a full blown distro, and not just some meta-pack that can be installed on the default Ubuntu? I'd think it would require less work than to have to continuously integrate with the latest Ubuntu. Plus what are we going to see next? Jewish Ubuntu, Cat Lover's Ubuntu, Hip Hop Ubuntu? While I understand the motivation for this project, when will it start to appear that Ubuntu is starting to fragment if it has to support all of these underlings? - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Ubuntu Christian Edition? Hmm... a good way to tap a new market for Linux I suppose.
- Travo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"I may even volunteer my services to any church just to install it and spread the good word about Linux."
That's a good idea, I think I'll do that too, maybe have a drive for old computers from members of the church, install Linux and distribute to computer-less families in need. - livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7*throws tomatoes at meridiangod*
- stocks29, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Wow, great, version 9.....now where the hell is the 64 bit version? C'mon just give us something....even if its version 5.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4played with the new install for 6 days & rested the 7th
- RodeoRobot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Interesting comment. But the Christians that I've met are usually the ones who do not live double lives.
- cuwickliffe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Version 666 is on the way.

Here come's the flaming :P - dancpsu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7From the screenshots, the background looks like standard ubuntu. I was kind of hoping for some themed background with a Bible verse or something.

They do have that too. See this page for "converting" (takes on a new meaning in this context) a standard Ubuntu install.

- Altotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ubuntu Christian Edition notwithstanding, religious organizations typically operate on a shoestring budget (with a few notable exceptions).
Those folks really should embrace open-source software. One BSA inquiry, and they are typically doomed. A church is generally operated by volunteers and folks that come and go with time. There's no telling where versions of software are, the manuals, etc. Even if it is all legal, few churches could prove it. Just fending off the lawyers would evaporate the budget.
Also F/OSS is a good opportunity to wrangle some folks wanting to donate to the cause through lending some time to help implement it, even work on community software projects... - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I hear that the Ubuntu Christian "Born Again" Edition has some really great, high quality wallpapers that include never before seen portraits of G.W. Bush planning the Iraq war with God as well as some really great information on how to funnel public money to Christian churches (except Catholic, because everyone knows us Catholics aren't "real" Christians) and many tips on how to ignore moral issues that don't fit in well with the GOP platform. All Ubuntu Christian "Born Again" Edition users will receive a generous tax cut at the expense of their already struggling local communities and an assortment of magnetic car ribbons to show support for the Iraq war and any future wars. Christians that download in the next ten minutes will also receive a "Condiuliani 2008" bumper sticker.
Seriously though, this is good that different organizations are benefiting from ubuntu. - centinall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6One of those new features is "Creationism", the ultimate replacement for "MS Outlook".

- krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good to see you, fak3r. :) The point of a full CD is that the project's creator (ha) wanted to give a CD to people that would install everything users would need without them having to add anything.
Sounds like a neat project. I remember seeing it a month or so ago in the Ubuntu forums, only with a lot fewer trools than digg. It's a shame more folks can't be as tolerant. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Also comes with don't-allow-females-to-use-until-housework-is-done mode for those bible literalists out there."
That's one feature I hope they push upstream to Ubuntu, then Gnome and KDE. ;-) - Clayphd, on 10/12/2007, -11/+12A Christian Edition? This bothers me greatly.... Who would need a Christian Edition of an OS? Is there going to be a Jewish Edition? Will it be kosher?
- CaptainRotundo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What I don't understand, not being a christian, is if your a "good christian' why do you need web filtering? Do many christians not trust themselves and their self control enough to browse without a filter?
- hellocharlie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Archie, webpronews.com is simply reporting the announcment, not responsible for Ubuntu Christian Edition... but the "pron" standout is still pretty funny.
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2He would install the original distro, not the rebranded one.
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hahahaha same, i dont think people realize that they need to keep linux neutral, not biased.
- krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2dugg in spite of the snarky comments here and in TFA.
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3UBUNTU CHRISTIAN EDITION!
Oh, man. That's the funniest ***** I've heard all week. - bscotf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dugg ... amen?
- oneseventeen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good point, why not just have a meta package?
One reason might be to have a fully-operational version of Ubuntu with bible study software and Christian themes without having to connect to the internet.
Or perhaps to have a live-CD with content filtering.
That's why I like it. While I only use regular Ubuntu, I'm stoked to have Ubuntu Christian Edition on hand to show fellow christians what you can do with linux without following online how-to's (no matter how simple they are) - malchus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the part that really bothers me about this is that Christians are always making a version of everything for themselves. There is Christian music, movies, tshirts, books, and all sorts of assorted things.
The way I understand Christianity is that we Christians should be inclusive of others instead of escaping from society. As I christian, I hope to make media and software that everyone can use. I don't have to try to evangelize through software.
I don't know. I suppose the project is nice as a one stop shop for the software a group of people may want. It just feels so exclusive. - invader, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4the recent front page article about UCE was pretty humorous.. if you missed it, look for it.. had a lot of 'features' listed
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -11/+10I might be juvenile but the fact that this is a religious organization and their domain is webpronews.com makes me laugh. Read it quick and tell me what "word" stands out. Did I mention I am juvenile?
- clintonthegeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1centinall.... hilarious.
Come on people, think it out. - Shigun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Anybody else notice that the reporter of this article did not read the original blog post very well?
"For some reason, the Linux screenshot on the Flashforward conference blog has been reversed though."
If you go to the original post, one of the first sentences is:
"This blogger is watching it from backstage, so it’s a bit difficult to hear; if any of these tidbits are completely backwards, you know why."
IE, the picture was taken from -behind- the projection. - HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The web filtering is for the kids.....and grandpa.
