- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I propose a new section of digg... "How-tos"
Don't allow the new category to reach the front page, rather "www.digg.com/howtos." - ahrefd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreed: howtos would be a good addition. excellent read. digg...
- funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this is a bad idea to put into a beginner's head - "DNS, mail and apache and that's all you need to know." No, it's not all you need to know.
I work in a datacenter and we charge $40 per 15 minutes if you need administrative help. Beginner's should start with a control panel to handel the backend of server administration for servers that are in production. For a server you are playing with, this would be ok to learn.
Don't jump in without getting your feet wet. - revka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1from TFA "learning to do ropes"
although, I'll acknowledge the amount of personal effort and expansion in tying knots.. i dont think its quite up there with skydiving or rock climbing. good read & digg. - project2501, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You could become a tier 1 DNS.
(No you cant.) - tadelste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1funkytaco: I think you mistook the statement...by no means would I say that's all you need to know. The article doesn't say that or imply it. The article says that's a start - now we need to go on to other areas - like database administration, user management, network management....
- hodet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great idea but getting a static address and a decent two way pipe into your home would seem to be a stumbling block for many.
Depends on where you live but where I live that would be cost prohibitive. - peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool.
But getting a dedicated line into your house and running the server from home isn't the best idea.
You would be better off getting space in a data center or getting a VPS if you don't want to drop a lot of cash. - phool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so there is no way for me to become my own registrar for that one domain? so i handle the nameservers, dns, etc
- echimu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>well now i have my own dedicated line with a static public IP. I want to host the domain on my machine fully, how do I do that without going through a register?
is pinklama.com up for grabs from anyone???
You cannot do that, each domain must be first under root server which point out to correct DNS server and then DNS server will point out to Apache/IIS server. - phool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok here is my question.
i get a pipe into my house, static my server and im off and running.
now i want to setup a domain name like pinklama.com
usually what i do now is go to registersite.com , order the domain name and point the name servers to my host.
