- mDot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Windows print support is left in the hands of the printer manufactures. It has little to do with Windows and more to do with drivers and now "print managers" created by said manufactures.
I love Linux printing, especially after witnessing a Windows install get raped by Lexmark's print manager. I'd rather my print drivers stay out of the way and use zero system resources until I need them, then have the print manager slowly leech memory and show me a pop up about how great it'll be when I finally decide I need to print something.
CUPS FTW - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13People still print?
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6wow, dosent have a lot of current printers...
- i440, on 10/16/2007, -10/+15I wish there was a Windows printer compatibility database.
Oh wait, that's right... - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I would suggest people buy hp printers as their linux support is tremendous.
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/ - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ugh you just brought back painful memories of dealing with Canon's horrific BSOD causing print management software shortly after the release of Windows 2000. What a nightmare that was. Canon's solution at the time was to skip on the management software until a new, more compatible, release which left our $500 multifunction device about as functional as a $100 bargin bin printer. You couldn't even change the output resolution or switch trays. Ugh I need a drink now. Painful memories....
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wish there was a Windows compatability database too. Far too often I encounter those stupid "host based" pieces of ***** that manufacturers like to foist on the unsuspecting public.
You ever tried to make one of those things go on a Window server across a network? - MrEcho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?make=Anyone
- spin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bought a couple of the Samsung 2010 monochrome lasers a month ago for $80 after MIR. It said SuSE Linux on the box under supported operating systems! Was very surprised to see that. I did a little write up on my site if anyone is interested in what all was involved in setting up Linux printer sharing on a well supported printer. http://spinink.net/2006/06/19/samsung-ml-2010-printer-on-suse-linux/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2any printers that correctly support postscript are going to work just fine with linux.
it's those $50 jobs you buy from walmart that are going to have windows only drivers and give you no chance of working. canon and lexmark are really bad for that *****. - mmm_linux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2umm... i was looking for somthing like this a few days ago and could not find it. so digg++;
- justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg because it's a great site.
I recently had the opportunity to take a printer or two out of a collection that my school would have been putting up for public auction. There were a few lasers in the bunch, so I looked at this site to get some background info. I ended up picking an HP Laserjet 5MP, and when I got it home it worked great on my Fedora Core 4 machine. - NetJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And all this time I thought printers supported mostly hpgl or postscript and the OS didn't matter...
Anyone have a mirror? looks like linuxprinting buckled. - raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IMHO more important to have a list of manufactured systems, and parts, rather than just printers.
Or even better: a tool that ran under windows, and analyzed your system for linux compatibility (using the db via a webservice). Chipset, display, printer, network card, the whole deal. Bonus points if it downloaded drivers and made an ISO for easy burning. - Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't complain when the URL does still work when clicked. It was a small error, but it's not affecting the article link at all.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you know how many times I've had Windows crash & reboot while installing HP's printer drivers (and all the bundled ***** that comes with them)? Many times. It got to the point where I'd hope to god that this time it would work.
Do you know how many times I've had Linux crash while installing HP's drivers? Zero.
So, I'll trade the situation I had on Windows for the Linux situation where you just have to be sure that a driver exists for whichever printer you buy. I'll make that trade any day, you can laugh at us if you want. - pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess Kubuntu spoiled me. After using Alien to transform the rpm to deb, i installed the deb, went to the settings menu, clicked the printer button, clicked the admin button, entered my password, and followed the process. It was as simple as a Windows printer install. I made a few changes to the proper file in SANE, and as long as I use KDESU to run any scanning program my printer, scanner, memory card reader works just like in Windows. The only thing that it won't do is check the ink levels or clean the print heads, but that can be done from the printer anyway (which is how I do it when using Windows).
- Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like so many other similar situations, a "Linux compatible" printer has a high probability of NOT working properly with your Linux -- unless you do a whole lot of screwing around and debugging the installation -- if then.
"Compatible" is a real weasel-word with Linux. Like with "Linux compatible" wireless devices. - IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No it's not Linux - I'm still using Windows. I just can't burn a Live CD right because I can't find any good CD burning software and I can't pirate Nero because my firewall is being sketchy.
But thanks for the help. I'll look at those for when I do switch over to Linux.
Does anyone know if the HP Photosmart 3310 All-In-One is compatible with Linux? - loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wouldn't almost any distro be supported if it says SuSE Linux? I thought it was the kernel that mattered and not the distro. (Linux newb.)
- Kruncher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@IMustBeEmo
Check out ISO Recorder, it's free.

Note: I have never used this application myself. - sqrt7744, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@IMustBeEmo: ...i've used several distos with many different CD/DVD burners, including an external USB 2.0 one from HP and have never had a problem... Try GnomeBaker or K3B (like Nero) for software. Also, a friendly build like Ubuntu or Suse might help you with hardware issues.
- pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It had my brand new Epson, however I use the Epkowa drivers instead. http://www.avasys.jp/english/linux_e/index.html
- sweetnjguy29, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No Digg. This is a depressingly old website and is old news. It is a handy tool, don't get me wrong, but its not Digg-worthy. Your best bet to determine printer compatability for Linux is to search through your Distros forums, to see what printers work well.
- IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That would be great, considering I'm about to move from XP to Linux [if I could just get my stupid CD BURNER TO WORK! ugh]
Any mirrors? - noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1OLD
- TruckStuff, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4I thought the entire world knew about linuxprinting.org? Meh...
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Nah. That newspaper and those books you have? All those words have been stenciled on. Pretty modern and efficient, if you ask me.
- sigge, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0A link to linuxprinting.org?? You can't be serious. Buried.
- MrEcho, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3HELPS TO HAVE THE URL RIGHT!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -22/+2WILL LINUX GIVE ME HEAD?!
o wait its incompatible with my penis

What is Digg?
