rebuttal.... drm demystified... not the drm you think it is - JazzSax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very slick...but no WiFi? That would make it take the cake. Still very cool though
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you hunt around (froogle) you can get a RCR-V3, which is a rechargable lithium battery pack that fits in most (but not all) dual AA battery compartments. It has a lot more battery (last space is wasted on the case) and it uses lithiums which have a high energy density. The RCR-V3 packs run $30-$65 US for a battery+charger.
- prothall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pre-ordered this near the start of the month. Dunno why I didn't put it up here - good move.
- noodhoog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been keeping an eye on this baby since it was first announced, and it's looking nicer all the time. The original GP32 was sweet, but this looks awesome.
There's already an outstanding dev community surrounding the GP32, and with the release of the GP2X that can only get bigger and better! - N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hoyl sh*t, i think I just messed myself.
***** the 360, and $60 a game, I need $200 for this, and I will never have to pay for a game. Screw iPod video. This thing PWNS. - caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They had me at Mame.
- bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahem!
http://digg.com/linux_unix/New_Linux_handheld - daone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with others that the emualtion the GP2X can do sounds great.I would really like to watch some television shows I download on the GP2X at work. My only questions are, how is the sound qaulity in the built in speakers sound and what is the battery life with two normal AA batteries?
I to would really appreciate a product review by some venurable source. - jacobrich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Needs WiFi Wireless G and support for WPA + WPA2.
- DenjinFlash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Sure, if you dont mind the lack of an optical drive, games developed by companies, a bigger screen, faster processors, lithiom ion rechargable battery, wifi, web browser, etc etc."
make that processor(ONE), since hombrew on the psp uses the psp's mips cpu only as well as the gpu for things like stretching, filtering, etc.
and if you did a little research you would see that the arm9 architechture beats the psp's power hungry mips architecture in terms of operations/mhz making the 200mhz arm9 equal if not better than the 333mhz psp mips processor, and there are two of them, the arm 920 and 940, both at 200mhz. can't compare apples to oranges ;)
also, lithium ion batt sucks, is expensive, and sure as hell doesn't help the psp get a high battery life.
aside from the higher res wide screen that the psp has, playing back your own movies will be so much better on the 2x. who wants crappy compression and limited resolution of the psp's mp4 format for video? umd looks GREAT, but too bad you can't playback your own clips with that codec/resolution!
also, 4:3 qvga is much better for emulation, which is one of the big features of this machine, adn what we're comparing about on the psp.
psp is great for commercial games, but for homebrew/emulation it's only OK. the "scene" sucks and is full of warez hungry loud mofos, the controls suck thanks to the ***** dpad, and the widescreen display that only shines with commercial games and umd videos is nothing to brag about when it comes to the homebrew side of things. - scottbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this product sounds too good to be true. i would love one by the specs that their main website gives, but I think I'll wait until I see some positive reviews on it.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny watching the PSP fanboys trying to defend its pathetic excuse of a homebrew "scene". The Gamepark32 always had a much bigger and better homebrew scene, and this system is its follow-up. The PSP homebrew scene, however small it was, was dead the minute this system was announced. Now it's getting closer to release. Can't wait.
Probably the best thing about it is its screen is standard screen (4x3). The Sony fanboys don't seem to want to admit that widescreen sucks for emulation. When playing SNES on PSP you have the choice of: 1) Stretched horizontally or 2) black bars on the left or right. No thanks, I'll take proper fullscreen, thanks.
Widescreen is nice for movies (UMD, yeah right), but sucks for emulation. The Sony fanboys can't admit this becasuse they can't seem to pull out Sony's devil ***** from their asses long enough. - stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is a video of this thing playing metal slug on a neo-geo emulator which looks really good. I have the older version of the gp2x called the gp32 and I love it. If this thing is just an upgraded version of that it will be worth buying. There is already an established gp32 homebrew scene which is really looking forward to the gp2x so it will be interesting to watch.

Good post but it looks alot like the one I made here.
http://digg.com/gaming/Move_over_PSP_the_Linux_based_gpx2_hand_held_plays_games,_video,_music_ - sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To the above to comments I don't think it really needs wifi or a HD. I mean it could be a tad smaller (If it was somewhere between a micro and gba i'd cream my pants) but SD memory is so cheap these days that 1G is affordable for anyone who wants the system. Also I mean wifi would be pretty damn cool (Wi-Fi Contra III anyone?) it would nuke the battery life and increase the price quite a bit.
- green1152, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had my GP2x pre-ordered for about a week now. I am eagerly waiting for it to come... The 2 AA batteries are a good thing, in my book.. That is, if you get rechargeable ones.
- cobra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0these things look dope
- Fowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now I see... 2 AA batteries
They didn't had anything better?
(sorry my poor English) - RevFry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice! ARM. So I can run Mono (www.go-mono.com) on it. Must have.
- riyadc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why cant sony open up the PSP for homebrew games and emulators?
- CoolBlade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Because it's not Sony's business man - they want you to buy Sony UMD games not ***** about making your own. What's the money in them for that!?
This thing looks pretty cool, and if it werent for my GBA writeable cart I'd buy one. - Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The PSP homebrew scene, however small it was, was dead the minute this system was announced."
Boy, I don't remember the PSP homebrew scene dying at all. http://pspupdates.qj.net/
This device would be more appealing if it had a hard drive (or some way to add one), and Wi-Fi. - lonegeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no built in hard drive???
- Wolfman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy Cow (referring to the above link), That's almost as sexy as the PSP, and definately (from the description) more functional (atleast as far as video goes)
- stosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For some super sweet photos of the machine go here:

It looks like the perfect handheld gaming machine to me. So sexy! - xerox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my friend has a gp32 (the older version of this) and i love it. this new one looks promising if its just an improved gp32
- adminmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would be very interested in purchasing this.. but i have one question... where would i get the emulated games? or do we have to wait for the release for a download section?
- ardnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I am not going to carry around a box of batteries to keep putting in this thing."
Just buy rechargable AAs then. - SLaYaH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im thinking about getting one but I cant say for sure ... to decide to get one or not
- FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would totally buy this if it had two more features:
WiFi and a Compact Flash Slot. SD is essentially a max of 4gb. (And that's assuming it supports SD 2.0, otherwise 1gb max. Also it costs $50/gig or so.) Where MicroDrive CF cards are cheaper ($20/gig) storage and you can get them bigger than 1-4gig.
WiFi using SDIO sucks. Why? You lose the use of your SD card slot, which you essentially need because it's only got 64mb of storage. Secondly, it sticks out of the slot looks stupid and risks being broken. - schotty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have owned a GP32 for some time now, and the unit is great! It is a Linux computer in a handheld form factor. The devkit isn't too bad (on Windows) and the libs are obviously there on Linux. Most of the appeal to me is the emulators and the fact it can do movies and mp3 as well. Although I will still be using my Rio for mp3. Its just nice to have it in a contained unit for loaning to the woman or to the kids. I recommend it if you aren't interested in the commercial games that the PSP and Gameboy's bring to the table. There are a ton of original home-brew stuff out there as well as some great remakes. But literally, only emulation or rewrites of stuff like the Doom and Quake clients are "commercial"
- eightysix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0USB wifi anyone?
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks great! But no rechargeable battery???
I am not going to carry around a box of batteries to keep putting in this thing. Linux rocks! - tranix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could someone recommend search words to locate the top games for GPX2. Thanks.
- RichMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it looks and sounds cool, but i'll wait till they make one with a harddrive and wifi.
- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats so cool :)
- Veloxi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"There are some good ones that I saw floating around for the Gp32 I only can hope that it is backwards compatible."
I just read in a FAQ that it won't be backwards compatible, but there's talk of making it so. We'll have to wait and see. - BxBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and how long does the batteries last?
- vm-01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For all the people complaining about the AAs. You have to keep in mind that Gamepark Holdings is a small company. They have to cut down costs on warranty support and a good way to do that is not using parts that can break down quickly like rechargeable batteries and hard drives.
Check out GBAX, GP32X and emuholic for more details. - Balthezar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ordered, now waiting for the unit to arrive to my place ;)
- Ravnos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never heard of those batteries before. Thanks OrangeTide!
I've already got one of these preordered. The open SDK was the number one draw for me. Why fight Sony constantly when I can homebrew on a machine that the company actually wants me to code for? - Remmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The games are of course illegal to download, but that doesn't seem to stop anyone. :)
After getting clarification on the DRM subject, this looks great. We've been playing around with LinuxBIOS lately with the idea of doing something similar to this. Our primary goal was a media player, but this would be a great option for gamers. WiFi would be a great addition. - candre23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The GP2X is a great little system with a lot of potential, and I will be buying one eventually. I have had a GP32 (it's predecessor) since shortly after it was released, and I can tell you that the dev community is amazing. It may take a while for all the emulators listed above to be optimized and fully playable, but it WILL happen. The people who port emulators and create new games for the GP32 (and now GP2X) are very dedicated and inventive.
As far as commercial games, the GP32 did have a couple dozen, but they were mediocre at best. Many were never translated from their native Korean, and the ones that were were translated badly. However, for an average price of ~$9, they were OK. The commercial games for the X2 are not likely to be much better, but they should be similarly inexpensive.
For under $230 (with 1gb SD card), it's worth it just as a video player.
The GP2X is not a perfect device, but what it does, it does well. If you're into retro gaming, writing your own games, or are a fan of "open" hardware, you should check out http://www.gp32x.com - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0neotechni
"GP2x has exactly zero companies making games to be sold for it."
What the hell are you talking about? There are at least a few companies making products for it. I know the gp32, the product before it, had commercial software. Are you just making stuff up to try to make a point? - ardnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"USB wifi anyone?"
It would need to have an external power source as I doubt the usb slot is powered. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hell no i wouldn't buy this thing... your glasses whould have to be 1 inch thick to be able to run all that stuff on it...
- Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that this thing looks AWESOME. But seeing as I am striped for cash this thing is nice because I buy it and then go for some of the free games. There are some good ones that I saw floating around for the Gp32 I only can hope that it is backwards compatible. But I think this would be an awesome Christmas gift, though I am going to wait and see the reviews first to see if it delivers on what it promises.
Also note that they will not have everything ready when it launches [IE WMA support]. See their website
http://www.gpx2.com - nyconx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""this is most certainly an upgrade to the PSP"
Sure, if you dont mind the lack of an optical drive, games developed by companies, a bigger screen, faster processors, lithiom ion rechargable battery, wifi, web browser, etc etc.
Wait a sec, by all definition the GP2x IS a downgrade!"
1.What would you need the optical drive for? Proprietary format optical drives are useless for adding personal content. Copy movies and other content to its Compact Flash via USB.
2.They actually do develop Games themselves for sale. Also give away a programing kit with the unit so you can make your own also.
3.Out of the box you can do things to this you have to hack the PSP to do. WIFI and web are nice but not a must. I have that in other devices and never use them for that purpose.
4. Not everyone wants a built in battery, sometimes can be hard to charge in distant locations without electricity.
I would rather have a product from a company that opens their product up to every possibility rather then one that tries to lock it down with every new "upgrade" - GRIMREAPER187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I own PSP i have a 2 gig stick with all the games i need I can finally up grade to 2.0 and play liberty stories and have my home brew games on another system i that will play divix wmp ogg mp3 jpg and everything else yeah im getting one of these instead of buying another psp for liberty stories because i am not downgrade from 2.0 and risk bricking tha mother trucker
