- radicaldementia, on 02/09/2009, -1/+18No, Linux != BSD or OS X
Linux was developed totally independent of Unix and BSD, they are very similar and lots of programs run on both with no trouble, but Unix was developed closed-source by AT&T and branched to BSD, which was used to create OS X, Linux (aka the Linux kernel) was written mostly from scratch as open-source by Linus Torvalds. - casbar, on 02/09/2009, -4/+14Linux good, Verizon bad. Watch how Verizon charges for open source.
- EVILTHETURTLE, on 02/10/2009, -1/+11No *****; the purchase involves hardware.
Learn things. - FI5HERMAN, on 02/09/2009, -1/+11I like the sound of that !!!
- sepelester, on 02/09/2009, -1/+7...which in no way means you can take Linux and make a non-open source version of it. Because you can't.
(what the heck are you talking about? I can see a point in that Apple has proven you can run a slimmed down *nix on a phone, but Linux did that way before) - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -3/+8Dime swill pissed at Horizon for assing up on the iPhone
- Cheezian, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3Open source != free as in beer all the time.
- thenativeraver, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3To bad verizon likes to cripple their phones. Hopefully someone will figure out how to gain root, then my pessimism might change.
- hotstyle765, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4Dude you really think Verizon would let you do that? To do anything on a Verizon phone you need to "hack" it. Otherwise you are stuck with good old Brew. Verizon has got you and me by the balls. We love the network and they know it so they can keep selling us POS locked down phones.
- CrappedCrusader, on 02/10/2009, -2/+5The prices are not in the hardware, they're in the monthly service.
Cellular service: that'll be 10-20 more a month compared to competitors
Data service: that'll be 30-40 tacked on
GPS: Oh, you actually want to USE the hardware GPS that is in your phone? 10 bucks/mo gets you access to the awesome VZNavigator, and ONLY VZNavigator
Tethering: Tack on another 30
The ability to take your photos off your phone or download ringers: $$$ per file
I can't wait for them to ***** all over open source! - ATLien74, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Slime will piss at Morizon whore gassing up on the iBone
- yunus, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2"I don't think a consumer will be looking for a 'LiMo handset,' but they'll be very impressed by the latest device they get from a Verizon retail store," Shikiar said.
Lots of people will want to know what the backend is. Especially on Digg. - RyeBrye, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Android is aimed at going on the full spectrum - from dumb phones to smart phones.
- abbathdoom, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2There are like 5 different competing linux based mobile platforms at the moment. All of them seem to be getting picked up and used by different companies.
- imbetterthanu, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1The GPS price can either be an add-on you pay for or packaged in with their vCast bundle for a cheaper price. The vCast package is crap but the ESPN and Navigator apps are great. There are phones on the VZW network that have unrestricted access to the GPS. The Blackberry Storm is one of them. If you write an app that uses GPS calls rather than aGPS calls, it will work without Verizon blocking access. Look at Trapster. It can use the Storm's GPS without any problems.
A friend of mine has an iPhone on AT&T and he has to pay extra for tethering as well. I don't think that's just Verizon.
I currently have Verizon and have never been charged to move photos/movies/soundfiles to/from my cell phone. I don't download ringtones so I can't comment on that. - gandhii, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1Speaking of "more hardware" whatever happened to all those other android phones that are suppose to be coming out? I haven't heard talk of anything else since the G1 was released.
- SteveMax, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1It's not the same thing. Android is a smartphone OS; LiMo develops dumbphone OSs. This has very low hardware requirements, and the carrier/manufacturer have to build up their custom UI and other parts of the OS. The various LiMo phones are very different from one another, they don't appear to share the same OS in any way. Android is a full smartphone platform, with compatible applications, a consistent look and feel, etc; but it needs more hardware, and a bigger investment to work.
- electrofreak2k7, on 02/14/2009, -0/+1Don't be.
- gandhii, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1Philly is clearly talking about "hacking it". It isn't really "hacking" if you're asking permission.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0And seconded Linux != BSD or OS X
You can run Linux and OS X on a jailbroken phone by the way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD2ri3aU11I - casbar, on 02/10/2009, -2/+2You obviously have never been or have always been a Verizon customer.
- RyeBrye, on 02/10/2009, -1/+1Why not just use Android? It's both linux based and free?
- JustinJS, on 02/10/2009, -2/+1Sweet i was going to get a new phone but ill wait for these :)
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -1/+0What? You don't know what you are talking about.
- dannyfreeman, on 02/10/2009, -2/+0fanboy websites
- lotus22, on 02/10/2009, -5/+3I'm still pissed at Verizon for passing up on the iPhone.
- PhillyOC, on 02/10/2009, -6/+2It actually sounds pretty sweet. Linux is failing as a widespread desktop OS but as a mobile OS it could be awesome. Imagine being able to install a new distro because the one that came with the phone didn't suit your needs, or have a limitless amount of free open source apps that can be transferred from phone to phone as you grow out of them. I am all for this.
Like Lotus though, I am pissed at Verizon for not carrying the iPhone, I guess my LG Voyager (VX10000) will have to do because there is no way I am going with AT&T's ***** service. - vtbarrera, on 02/09/2009, -9/+3Fanboy Fone.
- cjcoriale, on 02/09/2009, -10/+2You could almost make an argument that the iPhone already runs linux since it runs a slimmed down version of Mac OS X which is built on top of BSD, but it's not the opensource version since it's Apple...
- anonymousmedic, on 02/10/2009, -10/+1So it'll not run with any off the shelf accessories and it'll take hours to get it to work with the Camera, right?

What is Digg?
