- eraccusa, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1There is source and then there is source. So, your assertion truly depends on what source one is attempting to compile. If one has development libraries installed and is compiling a stable release of some software designed on and for Linux then compiling will be a breeze most of the time. I can and do compile software from SVN repositories for the bleeding edge of some games I like on Linux (Crossfire RPG, VegaStrike, WarZone 2100). I know how to figure out what is missing and install the development libraries if they are not in the system. But I am not pretending to be an "average" user.
In any case, these articles on blog.eracc.com are there to refute the typical, unqualified statements that state roughly, "Average users can't use Linux because xxx is too hard on Linux.". The average user is not going to be compiling source on average. S/he will be using the packages that came installed on the system and getting other ones from the distribution repositories and third party repositories for said distribution in most cases because that is what s/he will know to do. Of course this means s/he will have been taught what to do somehow, somewhen.
Did you even read the article?
