- WhereAmI, on 04/09/2009, -7/+37A distro based on a distro which is already based on another distro?
- deathfix, on 04/09/2009, -3/+20I vote for "Shaniqua" as Linux Mint's 19th release name.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 04/09/2009, -5/+17Don't bother to use it -- at least when you want to use it in a language that's not English. Mint is based on Ubuntu and as many already know, (K)Ubuntu's KDE packages are seriously broken. This is how Mint KDE looks like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/19616885@N00/33589845 ...
As you can see, almost everything is still in English, even though I set the system language to German.
Before you ask: Yes, I reported this bug. A maintainer said, that it's against the policies to fix this -- Mint users have to wait until Mint 7 for a bug fix.
I don't know why anybody would use this. There are other high quality distros out there that ship have working KDE 4.2 packages. Arch Linux is very well respected. There's a spin-off project called Chakra by the same people who make KDEmod for Arch: http://chakra-project.org/
Another well working distro is openSUSE. Its 11.1 release ships with KDE 4.1 by default, but updating to 4.2 is only one click away: http://en.opensuse.org/KDE4#Factory_KDE_Project
If you want a Debian-based distro, sidux may be worth a look. As it uses Debian Sid's repos, KDE 4.2 is available since a few days: http://sidux.com/
As always, Mandriva is also a good KDE distro. http://mandriva.com/ - foggytown, on 04/09/2009, -4/+14Mint's a great distro, works especially well for new Windows converts.
- plainOldFool, on 04/09/2009, -0/+9***** Yeah!
- simongiln, on 04/09/2009, -1/+9Mint is always fun to play around with between the major Ubuntu releases.
- eeclark, on 04/09/2009, -0/+8I can't believe it's not betterer.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+8I'm the dude playin a dude disguised as another dude.
- artissco, on 04/09/2009, -4/+10downloading :)
- drewfusb, on 04/09/2009, -1/+7bestest post ever. you win the internet!!
- seandfeeney, on 04/09/2009, -1/+6Mint is a good OS and I ran it for a while. I just hated waiting for it to release a version so far behind the debian release or even the ubuntu one.
- vishious, on 04/09/2009, -1/+6yo dawg
- lapubell, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4+1 for chakra. that distro seriously rocked. if it wasn't for the arch guys, I wouldn't know about two finger scrolling in linux. super awesome.
if i could give you another +1 it would be for the sidux mention. that's my main distro these days and has been for the last year. even more awesome. - Senj, on 04/09/2009, -1/+5I guess that makes this Felicia Day
- KAMiKAZOW, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3This is the latest Mint. The KDE edition just took so long, because.... well, I don't know why. Certainly not to fix the language packages Ubuntu breaks for KDE. (See my comment at the top.)
Seriously, KDE is a great desktop environment, but only on distros that don't break it like (K)Ubuntu and Mint do.
I can't say if you'll like KDE. After all it follows a different usability philosophy than GNOME. There is only one way to find out: try it. Two good live CDs are this openSUSE based one: http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/ and this Arch Linux based one: http://chakra-project.org/download-iso.html (among others, of course) - rothgar, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3shamless plug for the Linux Mint Podcast -> www.mintcast.org
- jzh1554, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2How does updating work if I have the last version of Mint but Gnome style? I feel like it won't be very happy trying to switch over to KDE...
- Chickenlip, on 04/09/2009, -2/+4Anyone who has used Amarok 2.0 will concur with me when I say it's a hunk of steaming turd.
Amarok 1.4, however is the greatest piece of music management software ever created. - seandfeeney, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Bah-dum-tish!
- plainOldFool, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2I will get this Live CD. I am a Mint fan simply because it never had an issue with my wireless card. However, the moment I can get (k)Ubuntu to work with my broadcom driver I will be switching.
- Ewingo401, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1Boo...
- KAMiKAZOW, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1The current 4.2.2 release is probably nothing like the "old school" one you saw at your colleague's. 4.2 is even quite different from 4.1.
- priegog, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1What's your wireless chipset? I find it hard to believe there are still many wireless cards out there that don't work either out of the box or by using the restricted drivers manager.
- jzh1554, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1Ohhh, I thought this was the NEXT version, I've always hated the names they give the releases so I never really kept up with them. I have mixed feelings about KDE, my college uses some weird old school distro with KDE on it in the lab for computer science, and it seems to be alright. Although mint and gnome seem to kick ass together, so I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it. Plus 99% of what I do is command line based so I don't really care either way
- priegog, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1Bro you can convert anything to some other thing in the linux world. Just yesterday I read about some guy who converted with gentoo box over to ubuntu. Switching over from gnome to kde is a lot easier and straightforward than you might think.
- plainOldFool, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1I don't have the chipset data on me right now but Ubuntu wasn't able to configure it as of 8.10 (I am linuxN00bz so I have no idea how to use ndiswrapper). I try each a Live CD for every Ubuntu release and I will certainly try 9.04 when it comes out.
Mint, on the other hand, automatically detected my broadcom and ATI devices and did all the dirty work for me. If I new what the heck I was doing then I'm sure I could have gotten it to work with (k)ubuntu. - KAMiKAZOW, on 04/10/2009, -1/+1Amarok 2.0 is indeed not that great. My main problem with it is that it can't read many tags correctly (like claiming that a few songs are 0:00m long). Another gripe is, that Last.fm scrobbling is currently broken. There is a patch in KDE's Bugzilla, bit distributors have to apply that manually. There won't be a fixed 2.0 release. The devs are concentrating on 2.1.
Amarok 2.1 is way better than 2.0. The tag problem is still not fixed. The preview snapshot I use also has the Last.fm fix not yet applied. Configuring the playlist layout is a bit too complex for my taste, but at least it's possible now. :-)
I just want a simple list view that allows me to click on the column header to sort it. Nothing fancy, but currently not possible with 2.1.
I have to say that I'm more and more fond of Songbird every day. It has some quirks, but also some awesome features.
Nevertheless I keep Amarok installed. 2.x is still young and it needs some time to mature. :-) - lostpunisher, on 04/09/2009, -4/+3Gnome isn't as pretty, but it feels so much better.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -14/+6Why not just learn English? It's the best language, anyway. English Rules!
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -9/+1Gay
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -17/+1OS X is more betterer.
