- jacksteram, on 05/01/2009, -26/+2041% isn't much, but the trend is clear.

I love Linux, but these statistics are not an accurate representation of the general market share. HitsLink monitors around 40,000 sites, most of which are tech-orientated. Linux has a much higher adoption rate in the tech community, so Linux is bound to appear more popular than it actually is.
If you look at the statistical data from a service such as StatCounter (which tracks over 3 million sites, covering a much wider range of sites), you'll see that Linux is closer to 0.5%:

Almost as popular as windows 2000...LOL - grexeo, on 05/02/2009, -5/+100I like to be optimistic, but basing a forecast on a single month is stupid.
- volt4ire, on 05/01/2009, -12/+80what's more significant is that this month, Linux's share grew by 0.12%: much more than its average monthly growth of 0.02% Optimistically, this might be a sign of exponential adoption rate for Linux
- Warom, on 05/02/2009, -3/+69Isn't it more likely a blip caused by the release of Ubuntu 9.04?
- iizh, on 05/02/2009, -7/+63/s?
- cenarta, on 05/01/2009, -26/+80Linux FTW!
- thinkb4utype, on 05/02/2009, -6/+56The Mac is only 9.7%. So 1% is significant.
- Phate8263, on 05/01/2009, -11/+51Or a statistical hiccup..
- Mejogid, on 05/02/2009, -2/+38Linux is a kernel, it's used in everything form routers, to mobile phones, to desktops, to servers to supercomputers. Get a clue.
- Balla79, on 05/02/2009, -5/+40That came from a guy who says "lol" twice in his post.
- korvins, on 05/02/2009, -9/+42300% growth in 4 years...
And some other sites report 3% or 4%, maybe because this site is too US based. In Europe is as common too see a Mac than to see a Linux. - mrBitch, on 05/02/2009, -10/+42RE: "... I love Linux, but these statistics are not an accurate representation of the general market share."
You're right, these stats are skewed to US sites.
The world Linux adoption percentage is much higher since Europe has a much higher percentage of Linux uptake than the rest of the world. - giruzz, on 05/02/2009, -7/+38I like the closing sentence on this article 'Over 300% in just a few years.'
From 0 to 1% in 'just a few years'. How long is it going to take to reach a 15% ? Centuries?
Anyway....I'm writing this from Ubuntu so I'm doing my (little) part. - rub3nmv, on 05/02/2009, -4/+34WTF?¿
98% of the consumers doesn't know the product!! - aussieNickuss, on 05/02/2009, -2/+311% of however many million or billion computer users there are in the world is quite a large number. =)
- benbrooks101, on 05/02/2009, -0/+29What? No... Unless you use a ***** 'programming language' like VB.
- kreatre2007, on 05/02/2009, -2/+29It's very likely because of the netbooks. A lot of them have Linux installed..
- stinkipete, on 05/02/2009, -2/+27math fail
- geoken, on 05/02/2009, -0/+25If you don't already know the answer to this you probably suck at programming anyway.
- bonus45, on 05/02/2009, -8/+32What's the error range of this data +/- 1% ? Please.
- suldar, on 05/02/2009, -3/+26I think it would be great for everyone if both Linux and Apple had a larger chunk of the consumer market. It would encourage companies to focus more on making there applications and games portable from one OS to another. Not to mention competition driving innovation. How bad do you think Windows would be if Microsoft had zero competition?
- fezzasus, on 05/02/2009, -1/+241% of 1,596,270,108 is obviously 15.9 million
- Bartboy919, on 05/02/2009, -13/+34WE HAVE HIT THE BIG TIME NOW!!!!
- dlan4327, on 05/02/2009, -1/+221 down. 99 to go!
- abbathdoom, on 05/02/2009, -2/+2399% of consumers don't know what an operating system is, so how they can choose to not use Linux is beyond me.
- MaxPlante, on 05/02/2009, -3/+24Title is missleading. This stat (if valid) is about desktop users. Linux, as many other Unix like OS, is currently mainly used on servers or embeded devices. You probably have a few things in your house running a Linux/Unix based OS, such as a DVD player, an MP3 player (the iPod Touch/iPhone does), car radio, etc.
- DrWarm, on 05/02/2009, -1/+22Hmm recompile kernel to get mouse working, man you really have no idea.... and that fact that you actually can recompile the kernel is a major plus
- MattBD, on 05/02/2009, -2/+22No it isn't. Linus actually designed it for desktop computers. As quoted here:
"To me, Linux on the desktop has always been the most interesting goal. The primary reason for that is simply that it’s always been what I want (I’ve never wanted a server OS—I started out writing Linux for my own PC, not to be some file server), but also because all the interesting problems always end up being about desktop uses."
Source: http://www.linux-mag.com/id/7313
So think before you write something ignorant. Linux is not specifically a server OS and was never designed to be specifically a server OS. OK, Unix-like OS's are good server OS's, but if Linux is a server OS because of that then so is OS X. - rpgmakr, on 05/02/2009, -1/+21"Linux Market Share Passes 1%!!"
As pathetic as that headline sounds is great to see it happening :) Let's hope the trend continues. It's astounding to me to see everything that's going on inside the Linux community with so little market share. - MyMainMan, on 05/02/2009, -1/+191,596,270,108 users?
Talk about precise estimate of internet users! - Phate8263, on 05/01/2009, -2/+20http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid= ...
Direct Link to source. - moduc, on 05/02/2009, -5/+23If there is no change to the growth rate (no sudden big adoption, etc) and the stat is a good indicator, in 2 years, it would double. So in 5 years it would be 6-7% at least. However, due to how quickly the Linux desktop has improved on ease of use, a clip effect may occurs (when it's start to be good enough). This would send it into 10-20% share easily.
Is is not counting netbook, or things like the Android. Counting that, it could be big. People laugh at the Linux desktop year, but I am sure with good formal study, it is possible to predict the worse performance it can get. Sure, it's still a prediction, but it's fairly reliable. - hamobu, on 05/02/2009, -7/+24There are four important points to state concerning this statistic:
1.One percent is good for a desktop with no marketing and that you have to install yourself.
2. Linux users are most active, knowledgeable and passionate users. They are most likely to promote their OS and set computing trends.
3. Since Linux is community developed, rapid growth in community means rapid growth in Linux development.
4. Growing Linux share will open doors for Linux with OEMs, Software developers, governments, etc. which will further remove barriers to Linux growth. - Bicep, on 05/02/2009, -12/+29Actually 1% of the total # of Internet users(1,596,270,108) is quite a few... about 16.2 million or so(give or take 10)... http://digg.com/linux_unix/Linux_clients_break_1_w ...
- Joh739, on 05/02/2009, -8/+25More user friendly? It already is user friendly... Take my parents for example, they use Ubuntu and have little problems with it. Taking that they don't understand much about computers to begin with, they find Ubuntu easier to use than Windows.
- inactive, on 05/02/2009, -10/+27Maybe when linux becomes more user-friendly....
- mrBitch, on 05/02/2009, -0/+16I wonder if you know that the return rate of Linux netbooks was a false report?
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Death_of_Linux_on_netbo ...
"... Continually repeating that we 'confirmed' a 4x return over XP when we did nothing of the sort is really not worthy of a great company like Microsoft. If we are going to compete, let's do it on real facts and actual statements ... " - jakem1, on 05/02/2009, -2/+18Sure, companies like Red Hat never advertise.
- directrix13, on 05/02/2009, -3/+19For every 100 people you will find 1 who uses Linux. Thats pretty significant. Most software cannot say that.
- TheZorch, on 05/02/2009, -4/+20Linux has a prime opportunity here to turn things around and get the netbook market back. Windows is releasing a crippled version of Windows 7 for netbooks. The different distros, Ubuntu included, come out from behind and offer a way better computing experience that's faster with no limitations which will get consumer's attention. Plus, when netbooks start migrating to ARM Windows will be left out in the cold.
- DangerCollie, on 05/02/2009, -0/+16If releasing a new version of Ubuntu could cause a blip like that, then that's quite a statement all by itself.
I'm surprised how much Linux you'll find in movie production these days, at the high end of the scale.
Desktop numbers would also likely include netbooks, most likely where the increasing numbers are coming from. But as the trend toward smaller, cheaper connected appliance type devices continues, you'll see more people using Linux, probably without even knowing they're using it. - hamobu, on 05/02/2009, -3/+18I do not know where you got your info, but according to the site where the statistic came from, this is what they say about the websites they collect information from:
# Additional estimates about the website population: 76% participate in pay per click programs to drive traffic to their sites.
# 43% are commerce sites
# 18% are corporate sites
# 10% are content sites
# 29% classify themselves as other (includes gov, org, search engine marketers etc..)
http://marketshare.hitslink.com/ - motters, on 05/02/2009, -8/+23In my opinion desktop Linux is superior in every way - speed, ease of use, aesthetic appearance and security. The market share is bound to grow, because the only thing maintaining Windows in its dominant position now is pure inertia.
- DrWarm, on 05/02/2009, -3/+18For a product that is only spread by word of mouth (practically) I think they're doing pretty well against some fairly substantial competition (think how much advertising microsoft and apple have done recently).
- computershack, on 05/02/2009, -15/+30Wow, it's only taken a decade and a half to reach the same market share as an OS discontinued by Microsoft half a decade ago. This is truly the year of the Linux desktop.
- marx2k, on 05/02/2009, -1/+15My mom doesn't seem to have a problem double-clicking the FireFox, Openoffice or Thunderbird icons.
- krisrm, on 05/02/2009, -3/+17Keep going! :)
