- HBZ55, on 05/16/2009, -3/+42If they didn't include screen shots why did they mention "looking pretty in the title"?
- Mithradates, on 05/16/2009, -0/+14Hm, that is looking pretty nice. This shot for example:

I've always intended to get Xubuntu for my second notebook but I've never gotten around to getting one. - Rudegar, on 05/16/2009, -2/+14like this ?

- 4321234, on 05/16/2009, -2/+12Internet pro-tip > click the blue words.
- jakereilly, on 05/16/2009, -5/+15Link to 2 actual pictures that the original submitter failed to give: http://kde.org/announcements/announce-4.3-beta1.ph ...
And no, they aren't really "pretty" - bj1989, on 05/16/2009, -1/+10Kwin is faster than the light compared to metacity with gtk.
- MasterEvilAce, on 05/16/2009, -0/+9Use a LIVE CD. You don't have to use a different computer.
- clarious, on 05/16/2009, -1/+10No, it is very fast, as long as you have a compatible card. While Kwin is a slug with my 8600M, it runs smooth like silk with my desktop 6600GT.
- int19h, on 05/16/2009, -0/+9Damnit what happened to vi. I will continue to use vi until the vim team removes all of the useless effects (such as syntax coloring and crappy multiple buffers). Please don't make vi into emacs...
- amoeba, on 05/17/2009, -0/+8Loving KDE4+ ! takes a little getting used to but well worth it :)
- echris, on 05/16/2009, -0/+8kde 4 is not kde 3 anymore....
- MethodOne, on 05/16/2009, -0/+8Why are KDE and GNOME crap? I have no issues with either one. They run on other operating systems than GNU/Linux like FreeBSD and Solaris. Starting with KDE 4, you can run most of the included apps natively (meaning without an X server) on Windows and Mac OS X. Unfortunately, the KDE ports to Windows and Mac OS X are works in progress. I'm not so sure about the GNOME apps. Don't expect GNU/Linux to be like Windows. See http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm for details.
- zer0mass, on 05/16/2009, -0/+7Not so much a compatible card as much as the latest Nvidia drivers. You need the latest and greatest for KDE4.2/3 to work smoothly. There have been a lot of changes in the driver that now support functions that KDE has been using.
- techdever, on 05/16/2009, -0/+7kill it with fire!
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -0/+5Windows 7 looks like KDE,notice the transparent task bar?
I've made mine transparent for years. - Cupantae, on 05/17/2009, -1/+6Vista looks like KDE
- merky1, on 05/16/2009, -0/+4If you miss CDE, you could always use FVWM, or fluxbox...
That's the beauty of of being able to replace pieces of the operating system you don't like. - zer0mass, on 05/16/2009, -0/+4Actually the art work and concepts for KDE 4.0 was around before we started seeing any screen shots of Vista. Then the more modern look was released before we started seeing screen shots of Windows 7. KDE may have been following the leader in the 9x days but it seems the other way around now.
- Narishma, on 05/16/2009, -1/+5It may come as a surprise to you but the vast majority of people don't use more than one monitor, so bugs with dual screens aren't something most developers will notice.
To complicate things, multi monitor support on Linux is a mess with at least 3 different methods of doing it (Twinview, Xinerama, XRandR), each with it's own problems to work around. - inactive, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3I like it...As long as I can make the task bar transparent,I'm good.
- TonyMurray, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3Sounds like you are talking about Kubuntu, not KDE4.
Everything you mention is the responsibility of the distribution to package it up, decide what things should be on or off by default, and make sure it is bug free and a smooth experience.
I really thing Kubuntu is doing KDE4 a huge disservice. Especially because there are so many Ubuntu users out there, they say hey, I'd like to try KDE4, I'm familiar with Ubuntu so I'll try Kubuntu. When they due it is a mess and then they spout about how KDE4 sucks.
There are many excellent KDE4 based desktops out there, look at Mandriva, Arch, and OpenSUSE. I really wish everyone provided an excellent KDE4 experience, but they just don't. - jasmus, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3Would it come as a surprise that most developers use multiple monitors?
I do agree, multi-monitor in Linux is a crazy mess of crap at the moment. - gszathmari, on 05/16/2009, -1/+4Where are the pictures? BURIED!
- oobuntu, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2maybe he means the features that used to be there in qt3 versions (e.g. amarok), or the regressions in kmail. almost there, but still waiting. meanwhile i get more settled with gnome every day.
- DeathToaster, on 05/16/2009, -14/+16To me, while KDE sometimes can look nice, overall it looks cheap and plasticy.
- maz2331, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2You can see them at http://kde.org/announcements/announce-4.3-beta1.ph ...
- vladady, on 05/16/2009, -2/+4a changelog usually links to something like this: http://www.kde.org/announcements/changelogs/change ...
So .. Internet pro-tip: Keep it simple so people would understand what you mean and what you want to show them.
Something Linux in general lacks. Unfortunately. - z3r0c0O1, on 05/17/2009, -0/+2I believe you mean Kubuntu?
- JohnFlux, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2You know that you can disable transparency and widgets?
- solarwind24, on 05/16/2009, -2/+4Fale. Read the article and click the damn links. It's given in there.
- MrTea, on 05/17/2009, -1/+3pics or it didn't happen
- techdever, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1i have a different theme for it, but most users won't bother to install a new one.
- zer0mass, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1Isn't this controlled on the X server level?
- yttrstein, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1Ummm... Neither FVWM nor fluxbox are anything at all like CDE.
- CrazyDave303, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1Know is that annoying to use because not some thing you are use to, or are the big holes in the work flow? I used KDE 2.1 and there was stupid holes like not being able to drag and drop programs icons on the the equivalent of windows "start" menu, or it's annoying like when I use OSX and I'm so use to moving my mouse a certain way to get certain thing done but it does not work on the mac. (not that i should it's a different GUI)
- Cupantae, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1"from whence" is like "from from which"
- MasterEvilAce, on 05/16/2009, -4/+5I love the upgrades, so it's hard to stick with KDE3...but as a release, KDE4 is in shambles. I feel like everything is getting developed separately, and then put together and released. Not so much designed as a whole. I installed the latest Kubuntu in a virtual machine, and I was kind of shocked, really. I kind of feel the same way when you buy a computer preloaded with windows. Everything is turned on, there are lots of icons in the system tray.. And then I don't really feel there's any polish anywhere. I really consider it a transition period. It'll take some time, but I think they can make something really great out of it.
- bashmohandesx, on 05/18/2009, -1/+1So you mean KDE Sucked before Vista did ?
- bashmohandesx, on 05/18/2009, -1/+1@Waterrat
The transparent task bar is not KDE's, the Task Bar itself is Windows' , however all modern OS already have the transparency, you have a good GPU make use of it - jasmus, on 05/16/2009, -1/+1Oh wow! that looks like... well, KDE.
- zer0mass, on 05/16/2009, -1/+1Install a new theme.
- MrSmiley909, on 05/16/2009, -1/+1I digg you up because that is your opinion.
- jasmus, on 05/16/2009, -1/+1I see a link to a changelog, and a link to KDE 4.2 Tips. Educate me, please, where are these links?
- Azathothh, on 05/17/2009, -1/+1ugly windows
- Corrosionx, on 05/16/2009, -8/+8Kwin is freaking slow
- Vektuz, on 05/16/2009, -6/+3Doesn't excuse it
- bratterscain, on 05/16/2009, -5/+2One of these things is not doing what the other is. That's like the whole Linux philosophy. I think it has brought good things but that anarchic philosophy kind of kills any decent integral fluidity that Windows and OSX have.
- course6, on 05/16/2009, -5/+2Windows 7?!
- jadedoto, on 05/16/2009, -7/+3Completely ignoring that GNOME, Enlightenment, XFCE, FluxBox all have their own styles... And that GNOME is fairly mature and clean compared to KDE...
