- TrevorBradley, on 04/29/2009, -0/+20After 13 years of Slackware, I switched to Ubuntu just a few months ago. Package management under Slackware was a stressful experience: I completely trashed one system and badly broke another trying to perform upgrades of one form or another.
However, I did approach Ubuntu with some trepidation. My Slackware server had a number of customizations I wasn't 100% sure I could reproduce: A MythTV backend server that used an IR blaster to change channels on an external tuner topped the list. I was worried it would take me weeks to get up to speed on the new OS. However, after installing, I was pleasantly surprised. I got all the whiz-bang awesomeness of Ubuntu (including proper package management, which I'm amazed I lasted so long without), but I was able to use my cumulative Slackware knowledge to make a very well tuned Ubuntu system, with far better performance than my old system. It's been the best of both worlds, and I'm very happy I've made the switch.
Not slamming the other Linux options at all, but Ubuntu isn't just for newbies. Linux is enhanced by what you bring to it, skills you'd need to bring anyways to other distros like Arch or CentOS. - emudeath, on 04/29/2009, -1/+20way more than .8% on digg use linux, and even more than that are at least thinking of switching.
- tweakr, on 04/29/2009, -1/+16linking to the comments isn't especially helpful :/
- nenadsuperzmaj, on 04/29/2009, -1/+10I liked the article. Although I use Ubuntu, I try many distros on a virtual machine. But, I don't think I'll be giving Ubuntu up. I mean, it would be nice to build my own system from scratch, but I'm way inexperienced to do that. Perhaps Ubuntu has made me lazy to "get my hands dirty" as the article says, but who knows, I might try and play with Arch...
Oh yeah, why do people who don0t care about Linux come and post disrespectful comments? If you're not interested in something, it might be a decent idea not to read articles about it... - jwdav, on 04/29/2009, -1/+9With > 300 versions, many with an "X" in the name, Linux is well positioned to take on both OS X and Windows!
Ubuntu X Ultimate Professional
...
Ubuntu X Home Basic - Heywoodj, on 04/29/2009, -1/+9Very well written. E-mailed to some of my recruits. Choice is one of our greatest strengths but it does tend to overwhelm the newbies.
- MacEnvy, on 04/29/2009, -0/+7Distrowatch (which is what the summary is talking about) has more than just Linux distros on it.
- ileftfark, on 04/29/2009, -0/+7If you need a guide to pick a distro, just stick with the 4 or 5 mainstream ones that have a large community for support. And anyway, almost all of the others are based on one of the big guys, with minor tweaking. Most of these are pretty terrible. See: iMagic OS X, which costs $80. lol.
- fuzzymuzzy, on 04/30/2009, -0/+5Don't bury the guy he's asking a question
- Powerfan5000, on 04/29/2009, -4/+8I'm not your friend, buddy.
- shadus, on 04/29/2009, -0/+4The only one I really object to is for server: centos, alternate: ubuntu server edition... /facepalm. alternate: debian.
- clickwir, on 04/29/2009, -1/+5WTF? Way to link to the comments and not the CONTENT. You failed your only internet test for the day.
- Vincent1595, on 04/29/2009, -2/+6I'm on Ubuntu since a week now, and it's great :)
- bonarez, on 04/30/2009, -0/+4I never was really happy about ubuntu. I allways believed it was overrated. Mostly due to all those ubuntu lovers out there crying about being the best of the best and stuff like that, but I do like this article because it empathizes choice. people not keen on changing everything themselves get a fairly decent os with most stuff just working and if that's what they want, who am I to differ?
I used many distro's over the years: freebsd, redhat, mandrake (before mandriva), suse, fedora, mythbuntu, mepis, slackware, backtrack and debian (probably forgetting some here). stuck to debian for a long while. currently I don't run a linux on my pc's anymore, but that's mostly cause my job requires me to use MS..
Do run linux on a few of my systems at home: running a dreambox for sattelite reception and an emtec Q800 moviebox to view my movies and play some music. currently looking at V50LE Wyse terminals running linux cause at work we use citrix a lot. I boot backtrack 4 beta from a SD card now.
I really liked the article cause it clearly states every OS has it's advantages, and making a wise choice about it has real advantages..
This site has been added to my rss reader cause of this article!! keep up the good work. - paulmer2003, on 04/29/2009, -1/+4Meh.
Mandrivia for coders? CentOS for servers? Slackware, Debian and Gentoo only get an "also consider"?
This list sucks. How about we re-title it as, "How to Choose a Linux Distribution if you are new to Linux"
There. Better. Then it'd be accurate. - jcannonb, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3There are versions of popular linux distros now for example that have BSD or OpenSolaris kernels with them
- theaceoface, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3Wow, that was really useful! For someone switching to Linux, it's a very handy guide
- orvtech, on 04/29/2009, -1/+4you choose a meta-distribution like Gentoo linux and make your own distro
- voodoo123x, on 04/30/2009, -1/+4I use Linux but I still enjoy reading about other distros that maybe I have overlooked. I'm sorry if you (UnbannedAccount) don't like this being posted but if that is the case, then just don't read it. Thank you to greenx for posting this link, I really enjoyed it.
- shuffle, on 04/29/2009, -4/+7From the title/intro, I am confused. How do you have a linux distro that is not linux based?
- Midnitte, on 04/30/2009, -1/+4How about you stop trolling? There was an article a few weeks ago that showed how slow a system could still run linux at, and windows is nowhere close to it.
- DAC1138, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2People also digg "I can haz cheesburger" pictures.
- shadus, on 04/29/2009, -2/+4For newbies I think that is good advice, but I'd not run ubuntu on a server. Shrug.
CentOS/Debian are far better suited to servers as are many other distributions.
It IS hard to beat on the desktop though. - adriaaan, on 04/29/2009, -1/+3I'm not your bro, necrophiliac.
- orvtech, on 04/29/2009, -2/+4im not your guy, dude
- int19h, on 05/03/2009, -0/+2What's wrong with Ubuntu Server Edition?
- lewkus, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2if i had time and a few spare boxes, i'd love to test out OpenSUSE and see how good it performs as a business operating system.
then weigh up the costs against xp + office. - Baryn, on 04/29/2009, -1/+3Don't work in IT?
Ubuntu
Otherwise, Fedora - orvtech, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2ccc-combo breaker
- nwogoldberg99, on 04/29/2009, -2/+4I'm not your dude, bro.
- Midnitte, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2Submitter probably posted a comment and then copied the resulting URL, not realising that the url went to his comment and not the article. /shrug
- Midnitte, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2Its great if another system crashes or you don't have the password.
- bonarez, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1thaught it was a good read cause it empathized on choice, but I too liked most of the 'also consider' better then the first choices..
- bhalo05, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1Please respect our reality distorsion field. Thanks.
- lynx44, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1Because it's a dupe. Digg wouldn't have let him submit it otherwise:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/How_to_choose_the_best_ ... - FredFredrickson, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1Man, and I thought Windows had too many versions to choose from!
By the way, your link has #comments in it, so it jumps past the article when you go there. - nenadsuperzmaj, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1Well, you got me there :)
- nenadsuperzmaj, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1Well, someone might have missed them. I have. Anyway, it's been dugg because people thought it was a decent read...
- tubeguy, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1Dugg for mentioning DSL.
- lemur, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1I'm thinking the best distro for you is probably Fedora.
- int19h, on 05/03/2009, -0/+1You're mentioning a range of distros, then comparing a specific (but unnamed) distrobution to OS X and Windows. The joke would make sense if you compared a single distro, like Ubuntu, to OS X or Windows. Your statement would then become something like: "Ubuntu is well positioned to take on both OS X and Windows!", which may very well make sense.
- MattBD, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1You could install it in Virtualbox if you have enough spare memory. I use that to try out new distros. Give it 512MB and most distros should run fine.
- lynx44, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1I find it hard to believe that this didn't come up:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/How_to_choose_the_best_ ... - DAC1138, on 04/29/2009, -1/+2http://digg.com/linux_unix/Choose_The_Right_Linux_ ...

These links weren't enough? Do we need an article like this every month? - univers3man, on 04/29/2009, -6/+7I'm not your buddy, guy.
- m0llusk, on 04/30/2009, -1/+1What systems friends and coworkers are using is a big factor. There can be value in forming groups and going with crowds.
- nenadsuperzmaj, on 04/30/2009, -1/+1I actually downloaded it almost a year ago, burnt it, and never ever tried it. A waste really, but it's hard to believe that it's noticeably better than Ubuntu...
- MicrosoftBob, on 04/30/2009, -1/+1My advice, read about the different distro's and then install Mint. Save yourself a lot of time and energy.
- r0ji, on 04/30/2009, -1/+1I've been on Ubuntu for a week now. *
