- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -1/+35I feel bad for your type. Those who go through life blissfully unaware of their own stupidity and ignorance.
- ieatkidslive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19I've been using linux since before it was popular, and it's come a long way. If you havent tried it or are thinking about it come to the linuxfest to learn something, or come for the afterparty.
- plizard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17i feel bad for anyone who worships bill gates and the windows os
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16I'm sorry to feed the troll here:
But if you think Linux is nothing but a command prompt then you've been living in a cave. Linux is so much more. The graphic environments available now rival (and even surpass in my opinion) those of Vista and Leopard. Load up any Linux distro, Ubuntu for example with Compiz Fusion and you'll see what I'm talking about. You have a secure system, open file formats, an office suite that can read and write to MS Office formats, an email client that can do anything Outlook can do (including read from an MS Exchange server) a graphics app that can read and write to Photoshop Document files, a document viewer than can read just about any file format that you throw at it, Virtualizaion tools that rock, customizablity that is unmatched in the computing world, and because of Compiz Fusion you'll have eye candy that'll blow you away.
I call that using real software and getting real work done.
Also, most open source programmers don't do what they do for money, they do it in their spare time because they love it. And it says a great deal that people working for free in their spare time can create something so wonderful and so powerful that rivals what the commercial OSes are doing. - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13He's just a troll.
- richbleak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Aren't Digg users supposed to be tech-savvy? How the hell does this douchebag think Linux is still just a command prompt? WTF? I don't use Linux, but even if you just read Digg headlines about it you would understand that it is no longer just a command prompt. Pathetic.
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Oh yeah? I taught him to code, when I could spare time from curing cancer.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7So long as you meffie, and the linux fans responding to you can learn how to use Digg's 'reply' function I don't care.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6does he know you?
- coldcarbon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Yes, Linux only has 3% of the desktop market share. Go look at there server numbers. Then go look at the devices you never really interact with. like every Cisco router and Linksys router. I know my uncle uses a 50mb install of red hat to power his cluster of server to supply firefighters with weather data to help fight fires on the west cost. web servers 90% apache not sure how many of those are using a pored one for windows.
Just remember not everything is about that little GUI you stare into through mid hours of the night. There are other uses of computers besides pr0n and downloading the next movie 2 weeks before it comes out. - djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Use Linux and say that again. You don't even have to install it, just run it off the CD. Do that with Fista.
- yoshifan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I can't tell if your message is sarcastic or not.
But, anyway:
a) OSX is derived from BSD, which can run many GNU / Linux programs, and on the surface it basically IS Linux.
b) Everything that GNU / Linux is based on has been around for a lot longer than Windows and it is well known that Microsoft just buys out software from other companies, creating the monopoly we have now. It is Microsoft that has based there software on Mac OS, which was based on the Xerox Star. - ethana2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yup... where I live people are switching to Ubuntu by the dozen. 'course, we're all kind of nerds, but once all the non-techies witness the existence of Linux for themselves, I think we're going to start seeing dropping market share for Windows.. Then of course there's the fact that Apple dropped PPC support and we didn't...
- tokyomonster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4DIGG ohio linux fest meetup??
- buswellj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5just wait.. in less than 180 days there will be lots of "rich" linux programmers around.. at least those working at VMware who had pre-IPO stock options! alas.. thats not me.. but folks get rich off stock options.. not software...
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What do you mean Ubuntu != Linux? It IS a GNU/Linux distrobution. Call it what you want, but any OS that uses Linux as its kernel, is Linux. So Stallman doesn't get his panties in a wad you can call it GNU/Linux, but it's still Linux.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3you're comparing firefox, a grain of sand to Linux, a beach. FIrefox is only a small part of a whole OS that you see. Although Linux has been around for a decade, desktop Linux has only picked up only a few years ago. There's much a larger world beside your little desktop. There are more Linux servers, mobile/smart phones, routers, embedded devices, super computers, clusters, than windows and apple combined.
What you are doing is basically the same as thinking that the Earth is the center of the universe. - ucg1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5The thing is, the concept of "market share" isn't as relevant for a free, open source operating system. It's just a measure of sales revenue. That doesn't reflect how much its actually being used. I would think there are many more installations of Linux than OS X, but you're not going to know that from the market share.
- sharkscott, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Meffie: Just exactly when was the last time you actually used Linux, 1997? If you knew what you were talking about, you wouldn't sound so ignorant.
But then again, I'll bet your just a shill flamer anyway.. - yoshifan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Linux is based on MINIX, GNU is based on UNIX. BSD does not enter into it..
I never said GNU or Linux had been around for longer than Windows, what GNU and Linux are based on however, have.
My point is on the surface BSD is basically GNU/Linux, not OS X. - arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Qwerty Syndrome, sir.
http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?QwertySyndrome - sizban, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5all you linux folk with your software requirements and stuff, making things difficult on us microsofties. you guys are always continuously harassing all us windows folk over here just because we have our new-fangled fancy vista and mind our mbasic. maybe i'll pony up and bring the posse to the party *g* ... although i think i'm too humble and low-key to show up to one of those linux events. i don't let my dog eat penguins. can't we just get some windows mobile smartphones in the hizzouse and call it a day? heh. "keeping it real" though -- if i don't see you guys, be safe, and enjoy.
- djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Based off OS X? Right, OS X was the first OS to use Unix as a base.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2WHooooshh
- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't know why, but I keep reading your usename as moffie ( http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=moffie ).
Sorry. I don't have anything to add to the conversation, but that was bugging me. - daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why?
- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Agreed.
As soon as I'm not required to use a QWERTY keyboard, though (meaning: early July), I'm going to switch to Dvorak. I did so for a couple of years (and could type much faster than I can today), but school has forced me back into using QWERTY keyboards :( - daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@zybch
And I pointed out that you are wrong. Do you suffer from some mental disorder by any chance? You seem to not be able to take criticism properly and resort to mindless elementary level name calling.
Firefox is owned by an organization call Mozilla. They have the money to market the product. Linux is not OWNED by anyone. Got it? - Loki, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1registered and looking forward to the event!
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Have you ever actually used Linux?
Furthermore, reverse engineering takes place so that the open soucre software CREATED BY open source programmers can work with HARDWARE. Hardware manufacturers lock down their specs and make it impossible for free software to work with it becuase people can't see how to write the apps to interact with it (e.g. Broadcom, ATI). That's where the reverse engineering happens. When it comes to new apps, someone may say, "I'd like to make an app like OS X's dock" but they still have to figure out how to do it from scratch because OS X code isn't open. I would say that the hard work and creativity put into an open source app is more than that of the paid developers at MS or Apple, because this person wants to creat a great app, they want it to work well and for people to enjoy it. So they work hard on it and they receive no compensation, and yet you see brilliant apps being developed everyday by these folk.
Moreover, Linux is NOT based off Windows or OS X. Linux was orignially begun to create a free alternative to Unix. Windows is nothing like Unix and never was. At the time of Linux's birth, Mac OS was nothing like it is now. Linux was born in the early 90's and it wasn't until 2000 that Mac OS X moved to a BSD Unix base. So actually OS X is the one that is taking from the Unix community.
If by "based on" you mean "inspired by", then who CAN'T say that? Xerox had a GUI first, then Apple took the idea and ran with for the Mac OS. Microsoft saw the Mac OS and created Windows. Does that mean that Windows is based on the Mac OS which is based on Xerox's OS? That doesn't make sense. When someone says "I want to create a complete office suite of apps" does it mean that MS Office is based on Lotus? Does that mean that Neo Office is based on Open Office? No, it means that different people are offering different paths to achieve the same goal. Hummers aren't based on Porches, but they essentialy perform the same function, so is the Hummer therefore based on a Porche? No, it's not.
And I'll repeat my first question: when you say "Linux has its niches but other than that is useless" how do you know? Have you ever used any modern Linux distro? What Linux was in 1998 is nothing like what it is now. It's not just a dark command prompt. Any Linux distro can offer you tools and options that stand shoulder to shoulder with Windows and OS X. Linux isn't the ugly kid in the back looking for attention. It's a mature competitor in the marketplace and you see more and more organizaions adopting Linux as their platform of choice on the desktop. - imabot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1special appearence by P.Diddy?
- ucg1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Sure, and my ***** is so large it has its own gravitational field."
Pics or it isn't so! - burty89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, so long as it has any mass at all it exerts gravity, so you aren't really bragging as much as you thought :P
- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@djGentoo - Didn't you know that? The Great Apple®, being the most innovative* company ever, created Unix. Steve Jobs©, being the nice man he is, gave* it to the world.
- masterdbugger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2so you go to a Linux article to complain about Linux users harassing you?
- maffick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Drew Curtis is NOT a "linux luminary" .....
try www.bannination.com instead... - gadgetuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Of course - he's just as much claim to be a Linux "luminary" as Drew Curtis.
- bmartin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1We don't care which kind of client you bring. Linux servers tend to be built on open specifications, and chances are, if your computer didn't come with a proper client, the developers have ported one to your platform.
- bmartin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually, while Ubuntu != Linux, they did drop PPC support. PPC was the last RISC architecture for desktop users :-(
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=382700 - ninjakin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm happy to say that I will be there!
- HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The article would be a much more valuable contribution were it not based on so lame an offense. It's the perfect outcry against such travesties as SONY rootkits or WGA, but windows update updating itself is a pathetic nonissue. I could rebut in similar fashion were I to decry Ubuntu for resolving dependencies automatically and not going out of its way to explain to me everything it's installing ad nauseum, or letting me perform software upgrades without similarly going into great detail about all the changes in the various upgrade packages.
- 0mal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0OLFU, buddy
- tehmoth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1and yet, the discussion was about the GUI, not the server environment. also, IOS isn't linux.
- cranium, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Drew is a censoring little bitch. Fark him sideways.
- lsatenstein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Re linux and Windows for Cell phones. With the former operating system, you have all the safety that a linux architecture provides. I would presume the same to be true for windows.
However, if it was to be a windows kernel, I can almost guarantee you that your cell phone would cost you $50 more, and would not be upgradeable. - djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Reposted in the right place...
- umbriago, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0If Drew Curtis is a "linux luminary" then I'm Abraham ***** Lincoln.
- JasonCox, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2We have a Linux event in Ohio? Wow, that surprises me...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Sure, and my ***** is so large it has its own gravitational field.
Pics or it didn't happen! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1God, you fanboys really are emotionally dependent on your little OS aren't you!
All I was pointing out was that other products that share the same features as linux (free, better than competition etc) are doing a ***** ton better than linux, so if thats the case why is linux so ***** slow to be adopted.
The attitude of you mindless fanboys is probably a BIG part of that reason! If you can't defend the indefensible you attack the messenger! Way to go jerks!
Face it, as good as linux is in many ways its simply NOT ready for any sort of widespread consumer use right now. You can go on and on about servers and ***** like that, but the -
