- svivian, on 07/15/2008, -6/+83Desktop operating systems and mobile phone operating systems are a world apart, using one doesn't mean you'll suddenly want to use another system by the same creators. In fact, most people don't even realise they're using Linux on their phone.
- sathias, on 07/16/2008, -8/+52I use unleaded petrol in my car, therefore I am more likely to put unleaded petrol on my breakfast cereal.
- LANjackal, on 07/15/2008, -17/+58Buried for being delusional. While Linux does serve as the basis for many phones' OSes, the UI is so different from desktop distros that even if someone likes their phone, such a liking is not likely to translate into the same feeling towards a desktop version of the same OS.
- belumaves, on 07/15/2008, -14/+49I for one welcome our penguin overlords
- etherreal, on 07/16/2008, -22/+55Buried for being delusional Linux Evangelism.
- e2superman, on 07/16/2008, -16/+47Are you kidding. WTF. Even if a cell phone runs on Linux how the ***** hell would the consumer even know? We are talking embedded solutions. For @#$@#$ sake even MS Windows is used in embedded platforms (including cars and medical devices).
The author is an idiot. - manbearpigm16, on 07/15/2008, -2/+22I completely agree, especially considering that phones are considered more like an appliance. I've been noticing that Linux users lately anyways have been overestimating how active the average person is in the technology industry. People are lazy, get Linux pre-installed and there's your market share boost.
- LexMortis, on 07/16/2008, -5/+20Most people don't even know what an Operating System is. I do tech support and asking people which OS they use doesn't work. Anything more complicated than "Which Windows do you have?" fails, quite often people don't even know the answer to that one... usually they answer "I don't have the latest one" to which I always reply "Good". It's kinda funny how those people tend to be somewhat clueless, but somehow picked up on the fact Vista sucks.
How does anyone expect to have those people switch to/care about Linux when they don't even know what it is? - Danzinger, on 07/16/2008, -2/+13ANDROID *****, DO YOU WANT IT?
- Tribis, on 07/16/2008, -1/+11TiVo runs on Linux are people moving to Linux because of TiVo?
- IllBeBack, on 07/16/2008, -4/+11Only 0xFFFFFFFE more steps to go until Total World Domination has been achieved.
- connieLingus, on 07/16/2008, -1/+8call me crazy, but i think the world is ready for a ***** cell phone that does only *two* things...make calls and, more importantly, store contact data on the web so when you flush the damn thing down the toilet by accident you don't lose the digits of the hottie you met 3 days ago.
oh yeah, and it should cost about $9.99 - zwaldowski, on 07/16/2008, -1/+7*****. Package management is crippled to you? Fine, go find your own ***** installers.
- helixed, on 07/16/2008, -2/+8I agree with LANjackal. While Linux may be the underlying foundation, that's not how the average user will see it. People use something because it's convenient, not because they realize the potential. And a phone UI is completely different from a desktop UI in general. Just because I can use an iPhone doesn't mean I know how to use Mac OS X. It's the same principle.
- diemunkiesdie, on 07/16/2008, -1/+7Thats a little misleading don't you think? Sure Apple is doing better with their Mac sales due to iPods and iPhones, no one will fault you on that point; but don't you think that the average consumer thinks like this, "Oh this iPod is nice, the Mac must be nice also." Not, "Oh this Motorola phone is nice*Not realizing its running Linux*! I wonder if Motorola makes computers? No, alright never mind then, back to Windows!"
They simply don't make the connection that the OS is linux and so they should find a linux company. The knowledge about these things just isn't in the average consumer's mind! They see it's an Apple product and they can conveniently purchase other Apple products from Apple. Apple has brand awareness and linux doesn't have that because linux is not a brand, linux is a whole class of operating systems. It is too widespread to have the appropriate brand awareness. - ToMZiLLA, on 07/16/2008, -5/+11"Are likely to influence.."? and you base that one... absolutely nothing?
- TBBucs, on 07/16/2008, -1/+6I don't exactly agree entirely with the author of this article, but Linux is making some pretty big strides. Intel and Linux are teaming up and working on automotive systems now too (In-vehicle Infotainment, or IVI).
http://www.moblin.org/community/ivi/ - zwaldowski, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5That's total *****, and you know it. Package management in general is designed to use shared libraries.
- DJNephilim, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5Ah, but how many phone users are going to know, or even give a *****, that their phone is running Linux? I would hazard that most general purpose users will never equate their phone's OS to a desktop OS unless someone comes along and beats them over the head with that information. UI or not.
Do you think that most iPhone users know that the OS on their beloved phone is just a scaled down version of OS X? Do you think they care?
The article is a nice ad piece for OpenMoko, but giving them credit for advancing Linux on the desktop is a bit much.
"When enough Linux-based phones have pervaded the mobile phone market, savvy users will abound in workplaces where "whether to port to Linux or not" decisions are made. The decision will more likely be yes if enough users are already personally familiar with Linux-based handsets."
That is wishful thinking at best.
disclaimers: I use Linux on a regular basis and do not own and iPhone. - inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5All I want from a cell-phone operating system is to modify it and use the cell-phone my way.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/16/2008, -2/+7Oh yeah, because no one bought the iPhone after they found out it wasn't 3G.
[/sarcasm] - ChayD, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4I really don't ever see this happening - half the problem is advocacy and branding. Take a look at your average Windows(R) powered(TM) appliance, see that 'lil flag? Now look at one of the many millions of Linux based appliances out there, my betting is that at least 90% of those have no markings, or even the slightest mention of Linux on them anywhere. How is it possible to promote an OS that no-one's prepared to admit they've based their product on? Let alone something the public's aware of. I feel that any manufacturer who's saved themselves months (maybe even years) of development should be obliged to at least put a little tux logo and a "Powered by GNU/Linux" caption on their product's box.
Oh, and WHAT THE F**K is up with this comments box shrinking and expanding itself continually while I'm trying to type, *could it possibly be more f**king distracting* /rage - FairDinkumMate, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4@ shadoweva09
"extra stuff I would I have to download every time I download new software with current static compiles, like gnome libraries for every application, despite WHETHER I ALREADY HAVE THEM"
You are either a moron & understand less than zero about Linux or are such a desperate Windows fanboy you have to lie about a competing OS to convince people it's bad!
Which is it? - icexe, on 07/16/2008, -3/+7mark my word, 2004..no, 2005..no, 2006...no, 2007...no, 2008..ahhh..2009!!! that will be the year of Linux on the desktop.
- synergye, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4this is the linux/unix section...
- cajones, on 07/16/2008, -6/+9I'd have to agree with the rest of the crowd here. The average consumer has zero interest in what OS is running their cell phone. They just want three buttons (phone, mail, web), Even that is too much for some who simply want a phone to make calls. Your enthusiasm is appreciated, but unfortunately misplaced....
- typeset, on 01/28/2009, -2/+5Or people will be oblivious to the fact that it is running linux. Average consumer doesn't choose a phone based on an OS.
- raynevandunem, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3"If you think with a couple of clever hacks that you'll get Aero on your car, think again."
I'm sorry, since when could you run Compiz (or Compiz Fusion) on a car's....um, navigation system or other computerized component that requires a hardware-accelerated GUI? - Dumbledorito, on 07/16/2008, -2/+5One step closer on that famous journey of a thousand steps, eh?
And isn't "World Domination" against the Linux ethos? - bdbr, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3I had to laugh when he complained that he "can't even SSH" into his phone. Its true, a lot of phones have abysmal software, but there's gotta be a better argument than that!
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3So far I've met exactly 0 people with ipods or iphones that are doing that.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -1/+4Yes, because Windows was a huge hit before 3.1 right? (hint: it wasn't)
- tony23, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3I've reported that bug a couple times. Seems like Digg's javascript programmers don't quite have a handle on it yet. Either that, or they just don't care.
- Laminarcissus, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3But wait, this is a watershed moment. Linux vs. iPhone? It's two Digg humpworthies competing head to head!
- F399SF, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3I wouldn't host a website on anything but Linux, but hoo boy is it not anywhere near ready for the desktop. Do you think the average person wants to even *think* about adding non-free software repositories or typing anything into a command line to watch DVDs or get WPA to work? Even the "newbie friendly" Ubuntu is a hassle.
- brownr21, on 07/16/2008, -2/+4They're worse...
- Megatog615, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2I don't want to see Linux take over the world. I'd rather it be a 50/50 competitor with other OS' in the marketplace. More choices means better innovation.
- newl, on 07/16/2008, -1/+3A piece of hardware running on a piece of software? I'm flabbergasted!
- flawlessjess, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2This year will be the year of Linux!!
/ sarcasm - chillypacman, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2"Buried for being delusional."
Every 'Linux will now be the end of Windows because of such and such' story is delusional, regardless of the details or source. - daftman, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2nice one strawman
- JuliusScissor, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Can I accuse him of both? I can use CDs and if I want an application I can look through tagged and categorized selection plus suggestions and the search option is so useful, beats heading to download.com.
- jonathandyer, on 07/16/2008, -1/+3It is huge in the marketplace. Most of the internets runs on apache.
- fraggle35, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Wrong
- blqysmg, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1My "Year of Linux on the Desktop" was 2007, no, 2006, and my "Year of Linux on the Laptop" was 2004. In our household, we run two linux boxen, two Windows boxes, and one Mac.
I've also run, in my time, openBSD, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, VMS, DOS, CP-M, and a host of others. Okay, I've been doing this too long, and may not be the typical consumer... - inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Not if Inmate #40948-018 has anything to say about it http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/08/07/15/1933257.shtml
I know the Link is in bad taste. - surferjoemaui, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1still don't what defines a 'power user'. (can do more than check email?)
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1are you sure its not OVER 9000?!
- fraggle35, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1That's all the explanation it needs.
- kipmartin, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1done. see Verizon's RAZR V3m, Backupbuddy, and it even has great call quality and reception. who knows what the damned OS and who cares--it works.
