- drrlvn, on 05/13/2009, -2/+23In other words, open-source dropbox. Sounds like a killer function to me :)
- chadsmith729, on 05/13/2009, -5/+20Wait, didn't this already make it to the front page or am I going crazy?
Edit: Oh here it is: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Hands_on_Canonical_aims ...
Digg duplication filter wins again! - inactive, on 05/13/2009, -1/+14Not open source...
NERD RAGE!!! - uzusan, on 05/13/2009, -0/+11The client is open source, but the server isn't.
"Unlike the client components, the server software will not be released under an open source license. Canonical will keep the server software closed for now so that it can build a healthy business on top of the service."
From page 2 of the ars review: http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/05/ha ... - svensko, on 05/13/2009, -0/+10Withholding details? That's not very GNU-ish of them!
- Farmer77, on 05/13/2009, -2/+11I love dropbox. I can put up a link to a picture faster than uploading to tinypic or other image hosts. Like this:
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/489862/flexibility.jpg - brundlefly76, on 05/14/2009, -0/+7Its funny, the article says Ubuntu One is crossplatform, but the website says its only for Ubuntu Linux.
The article also says Dropbox is NOT crossplatform, but it has *always* been crossplatform on Mac, Linux, and Windows.
Did the person writing the article actually know anything about either product?
Or just feel like making up stuff?
The only reason I use Dropbox is because it *is* crossplatform. I don't think I've ever even had multiple *Ubuntu Desktop* computers even though I've used Ubuntu for years. - nickdot, on 05/13/2009, -2/+9As an enthousiast Ubuntu user, I don' t like Canonical pushing another closed source product as a business model. Luckily someone already submitted Ubuntu One bugreport: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubunet/+bug/375345 ("Ubuntu One" name infringes on Ubuntu trademark policy and creates confusion)
- johnomaz, on 05/13/2009, -2/+9I love dropbox. Its super easy and have yet to experience any hiccups with it. Its cross platform so I have it on a couple windows machines and a linux one. I'm thinking of paying the $99 for 50 gigs.
The downside of this clone, it appears to be Linux Only. Dropbox isn't. - lashtal, on 05/13/2009, -0/+6So you're calling every microphone 'The Ear' ?
- merreborn, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5Why do people insist on using the term "memory" to refer to storage?
- fiddler616, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5Guys. We *just* saw this.
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Hands_on_Canonical_aims ...
Buried for redundancy. - inactive, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5i will never get tired of seeing that pic on the internet
- adorkable81, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5dropbox = pure awesome. A true "set it and forget it" apps.
I usedto put my KeePass database into my thumbnail to access username/password. Now I sync it to all of my computers via DropBox, and presto, any changes I make are sync to all 3 computers (work, PC at home, and Mac laptop).
Awesomeness!!! - Nickedynick, on 05/13/2009, -3/+7Dropbox has an open source client anyway. This could be a huge plus point for Ubuntu though!
- irisblaze, on 05/14/2009, -0/+4hi Bill Gates :D
- cquilliam, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4Hi, you must be new here. Hope you enjoy your stay.
- hansrodtang, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3Bah, who the hell cares about Ubuntu 1.0? I have Ubuntu 9.04 :D
(And yes, I am just making a point about the bad choice of name) - ifallen, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3i think the free is cool, but 10 bux a month for the 10 gigs?
it would be cheaper to use mobile me than that. - Filter, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3Maybe I misunderstood but didn't it say it was Ubuntu 9.04 only? At least that was the indication. It also said that it was like dropbox but was multi-platform. Dropbox is multi-platform. I've run dropbox on Linux and Windows and it works really well.
I probably misunderstood the article through. Ubuntu One is going to be a cool service if it's anywhere near as good quality as Ubuntu. - jemmrich, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3Im a happy dropbox user. All my computers are ubuntu machines, with one windows dual boot. I will continue to use dropbox, but will be more than happy to use this service as well for a nice 4GB of free off site backup storage.
One thing that I would really like to see is an option to connect to your own server. This way privacy is of no concern to users/businesses and you can have unlimited storage with multiple users. - bin2hex, on 05/13/2009, -1/+4closed source backend, not cross platform (or even cross distro) and lots of details withheld = load of crap and why do we need it when we have dropbox?
- hansrodtang, on 05/14/2009, -0/+2No, only the Dropbox Nautilus bindings are open source, the daemon that does all the work is not
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2I thought it was 2GB?
- bobbknight, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2duplicate
- thrillho, on 05/14/2009, -0/+2$10 per month for 10GB? Amazon S3 is way cheaper. $0.15 per GB per month, $0.17 per GB transferred
- socomoddjob, on 05/13/2009, -2/+3set it and forget it is billy mays' line.....
- LostOverThere, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1I assumed that it was only available for 9.04 whilst its in the opt-in beta. Hopefully once its released it will become available on other platforms.
- LostSanctuary, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1canonical tries to target ubuntu fanatics with this expensive price
- fiddler616, on 05/13/2009, -1/+1[citation needed]
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+0I'm going to get the 10 GB option even if I'm not going to use it. It's a good way to fund development of Ubuntu.
- bbliss17, on 05/14/2009, -3/+2Dropbox is great but the limit of 2GB is so lame.....it makes the program forgetful
- MWeather, on 05/13/2009, -4/+2Where does your brain store it's data?
- adante, on 05/13/2009, -2/+0Don't like Canonical pushing another closed product as a business model? Given the ubuntu philosophy ( http://www.ubuntu.com/community/ubuntustory/philos ... ) I think it is hypocritical for them to push a closed source product PERIOD.
Given all the harping freetards make about closed source software (notwithstanding drivers), unless they are planning on opening both server and clientside code I think this is a bit rich. Otherwise this is a case of being anti-closed source, except when they can profit from it. - bsdgroup, on 05/13/2009, -4/+0God damn it Farmer77..., now I got a boner! :P :D :D :D
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -9/+4I think I'll stick with my NAS drives.
- Megatog615, on 05/14/2009, -7/+2"Linux: ", the new "BREAKING: ".
- b3and1p, on 05/13/2009, -15/+4I dunno, I like dropbox. It is simple and works without fail. I couldn't run my business without it. It is services like this that I have no problem paying for.
(plug: placesnap.com) - RandaII, on 05/13/2009, -31/+3***** ubuntu. I hope they fail.
