  • nxusername, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Desktop search is overrated and completely unnecessary for normal users. It's one of those things where 1 vendor starting pushing it so everyone else rushed to copy it.

    I won't deny that it has SOME useful benefits (for people who are a complete mess). But it's a resource hog and reduces overall desktop performance (especially on laptops).

    I have 31 GB in my home directory and I know where EVERYTHING I need is located thanks to a little discipline and a simple hierarchical file structure. Plus, programs like iTunes, iPhoto, and Picasa already have library features that reduce the need for desktop search.

  • neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I ditched Beagle after it got caught up in some sort of recursive loop while indexing, and ended up inflating my home directory with 2.4gigs of log file.
    Also, it doesn't seem to like any symlinks when you're feeding it paths to index (quite possibly the cause of my earlier problem, though it doesn't appear to follow symlinks when indexing)
  • joeshaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The new version (0.2.14) is a lot better at this generally, and just today I committed code to prevent this from happening mainly with MS Word files but also PDF files, RPMs, videos, etc. to SVN, so Beagle has greatly improved in terms of looping bugs. Give it a shot.

    And it's true, it doesn't follow symlinks.
