- Four20, on 03/31/2008, -3/+72yea as soon as you say something is unhackable you tempt the gods
- Remmy, on 03/31/2008, -9/+551. This was a top story on the front page hours ago.
2. They weren't "hacking" *****. They were exploiting systems.
3. When a top digger posts dupes top stories, you know it must be a slow news day. - evilunleashed, on 03/31/2008, -2/+40And the Titanic was unsinkable.
- ToadLeg, on 03/31/2008, -2/+37Yes, that's the whole point. When new holes are found in the system, they will be patched immediately because it is open source. Unlike proprietary developers, open source developers want flaws to be discovered.
- Dumbledorito, on 03/31/2008, -1/+36"That's amazing! I've got the same combination on my luggage!"
- baalzebub, on 03/31/2008, -1/+27bull! while it is true Linux systems are much more secure by design than ms-windows there are breaches of security on Linux based servers on occasion...
- sq377, on 03/31/2008, -4/+29"She noted that some had found bugs in the Linux operating system but many of them didn't want to put the work into developing the exploit code that would be required to win the contest."
Didn't want to win $10,000 and a computer? - theaceoffire, on 03/31/2008, -1/+21Ah, but can you drive with your eyes closed?
Go try it, and then get back with us. - str3ama, on 03/31/2008, -5/+24buried as inaccurate, don't get me wrong Linux is the safest amongst all popular operating systems, but firstly it depends on which distro and secondly NOTHING is hacker proof. To the uninformed reader this would be too reassuring that they don't have to update their system or get patches, or run a firewall, etc.
- VeniceCA, on 03/31/2008, -6/+23I quickly learned that using root along with 1234 as my password was a sure fire way to allow access to my ubuntu setup. Someone discovered it over the network within 48 hours. Not hacked, just stupid on my part.
- TheLoneWolf071, on 03/31/2008, -1/+18The Only unhackable computer is the one with no power
- Phocion55, on 03/31/2008, -5/+20A bit presumptuous, aren't we?
- latova, on 03/31/2008, -2/+16That has nothing to do with hacking. It's the memory management, and required them to rewrite a lot of code.
- turbopro, on 03/31/2008, -0/+12even then it can be stolen. Invest in guns, not norton.
- Philluminati, on 03/31/2008, -4/+15"Macaulay said the flaw he exploited was a cross-platform bug that took advantage of Java to circumvent Vista's security"
"many of them didn't want to put the work into developing the exploit code that would be required to win the contest."
-- Who the hell said "hacker proof"? - m0tbaillie, on 04/01/2008, -0/+11Are you kidding me? If you made that same proposal somewhere like Slashdot or potentially even SomethingAwful, sure. However, 4chan is for the most part nothing more than lifeless *****-head teenagers and animus. Any good Linux sysadmin can setup a box with the right iptables and SELinux and make it pretty much impenetrable. Just because you spout retarded catchphrases and have blue LED bling on your desktop box does not mean you're some l33t d00d.
- wonderchemist, on 03/31/2008, -0/+11Although Apple has quite a bit of closed source code, the exploit in WebKit (open source) is already fixed in the nighties.
- theaceoffire, on 03/31/2008, -1/+11$10,000 idiot. You got $10,000 for hacking ANY of the computers on day 2, which is enough for several free comps.
People were trying to hack the ones they could do fastest, period. - latova, on 03/31/2008, -0/+10My toaster is hacker proof.
- gudnbluts, on 03/31/2008, -1/+11"Didn't want to win $10,000 and a computer?"
It's more that it wasn't worth the time taken when there were easier targets, like the Mac. - akkibaba, on 03/31/2008, -1/+9Clearly, security flaws require a far faster response time than application usability flaws. Mozilla is very, very good at patching new security holes as they're discovered.
- Vaeduus, on 03/31/2008, -1/+9Probably because it would have worked for months after...whereas anything that serious on Linux would be fixed in days.
- kaelyiesta, on 03/31/2008, -0/+8And that feeling is all that matters. Go back to sleep.
- RoflcopterFUEL, on 04/01/2008, -0/+74. ???
5. PROFIT! - selrahc, on 03/31/2008, -1/+8127.0.0.1
- Phocion55, on 03/31/2008, -0/+7Hate to break it to you, but I just remotely made some toast for myself on it.
- Tatsumi2, on 03/31/2008, -1/+7They found bugs but didn't want to spend the time to write the code. Thats not Hacker proof, thats lazy hacker proof.
- RetepNamenots, on 04/01/2008, -0/+6It was Ubuntu. Which contains a *****-load of software by default; more than vista at least, by default.
- norman619, on 03/31/2008, -0/+6I guess their definition of "hacker Proof" is a hackers unwilling to take advantage of known exploits. Too funny.
Hacker proof? HA! - Xyc0, on 04/01/2008, -0/+6I can still hack it with an ax.
- X9001, on 04/01/2008, -0/+6And its your digg password too isn't it?
- surKaz, on 03/31/2008, -2/+8'Hacker Proof'?.. I'll show Ye..
- socceroos, on 04/01/2008, -1/+6Lol, hahahahahah. Oh wait, I have the same laptop and it works perfectly.
- colincornaby, on 03/31/2008, -3/+8Given how many security updates my fresh Ubuntu install downloaded, I would say no, Linux is not hacker proof. They just have the good fortune of catching their bugs before anyone else does so far.
- Awspire, on 03/31/2008, -2/+7"The flaw is in something else, but the inherent nature of Java allowed us to get around the protections that Microsoft had in place," he said in an interview shortly after he claimed his prize Friday. "This could affect Linux or Mac OS X."
Ya, the same flaw in JAVA that was used to exploit Vista could have been applied to Linux. - norman619, on 03/31/2008, -3/+8I've come to expect that from Linux people.
- Deadly4Shot, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5Didn't you actually remotely make toast for him on it?
- neko, on 04/01/2008, -0/+5Nah, if you type your password on Digg, it's smart enough to change it to *s.
Look: ******* - Charlotte_Web, on 04/01/2008, -0/+5You know, I suspect that the best hackers don't share their secrets. The people who hack professionally for governments and for large enterprises.
If you're pulling down a six or seven figure salary, are you going to kill your livelihood on these little $10,000 prizes? - ho0ber, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6Newfag.
- lmhoward, on 03/31/2008, -3/+7i feel safe.
- nandasunu, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5classic memories =)
- haxderek, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5I got a record! I was 'Zero Cool'!
- justin82592, on 04/01/2008, -1/+5temptation....rising...!
- rtaibah, on 05/22/2009, -2/+6Isn't this yesterdays news? Dupe!
- p0tent1al, on 04/01/2008, -0/+4I can
sensationalized headline - Apokalyps2547, on 03/31/2008, -3/+7I DARE any Linux user to put their IP on 4chan and say "bring it on".
Their box will be a toaster by the next day. - krogothwolf, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4Ha, I just ninja stole his remotely created toast!
- DemonWasp, on 04/01/2008, -1/+5I can only hope you're not delusional either.
- MadOtaku, on 04/01/2008, -0/+4Networking card removed and no input ports is pretty secure :p
