- sirhomer, on 10/10/2008, -2/+33Hundreds of new webcams models are supported with this release, as well as a greater assortment of native wifi drivers. It's actually quite a major kernel update in general.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -2/+32It's the hardware manufacturers fault for not releasing linux drivers or open specifications. If you'd like you could start a petition to get your manufacturer to support your hardware on linux, but good luck getting anywhere with that.
But the drivers that are available for Linux actually get included very quickly. The kernel is updated very often compared to Windows (where it's only updated with every new service pack or operating system). Remember that at first Vista barely had any drivers available for it; I had to download and install around 10 drivers for Vista to get it to where it was when it had XP. For the same machine on Linux I just had to install my NVidia driver and my Broadcom wireless driver. - pHreaksYcle, on 10/11/2008, -9/+38Please don't bury me, I just want to discuss something.
I use Ubuntu exclusively, and mostly FOSS (save Flash etc)
The thing I have noticed about Linux the most is that, it's AWESOME when webcams, wifi things are fixed but it always seems like it's a few months too late! Like, I had a friend who wanted to put Ubuntu on his laptop and I had to try to put ndiswrapper on it because it had no native driver, his webcam didn't work etc and he got pretty pissed so he just put XP back on.
Even if I ask him about trying again, I think he'll beat my ass :P
I just hope that soon and very soon more people learn to code so stuff gets out even quicker so success will occur for open source.
Thanks for listening, await everyones opinion. - oobuntu, on 10/10/2008, -6/+34this is the version that ubuntu 8.10 will use, let's hope it's a good one!
- 4DFX, on 10/11/2008, -2/+21WoW! "1.3. Kexec jump: kexec/kdump based hibernation"
This means we won't have to reboot anymore even when changing the kernel! - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+16Why, is Windows 7 going to run on the 2.6.27 linux kernel?
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/11/2008, -1/+16I fully agree with the fact tat it's the hardware vendors fault, I wish they would notice that people who use linux have money too. Like me.
- oobuntu, on 10/11/2008, -0/+14one of the many good things about this release is that the ath5k wireless drivers are present in the kernel which means that the wireless on the eee pc 701 will work out of the box. yay!
- gutenpress, on 10/11/2008, -3/+14If XP does what he requires, then why should be force himself to use Ubuntu if it doesn't perform the functions he requires?
Perhaps when he's forced to upgrade to Vista and his webcam breaks he'll get so pissed off that he'll try Ubuntu again, or perhaps he'll just stick with XP and be a happy camper. - Onestone, on 10/11/2008, -0/+11It is.
- Flamekebab, on 10/11/2008, -0/+11I'd love to know how Windows 7 will run without a kernel..
- ssam, on 10/11/2008, -2/+11http://kernelnewbies.org/LinuxChanges would be a better link :-)
- IpHa, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8Windows has its own version of a kernel, they just don't go around advertising its version.
- mojoel, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7A "nee shay" market?
- damndj, on 10/11/2008, -5/+11This really is the year of Linux!
- oobuntu, on 10/11/2008, -0/+6the way to win people over is by having a really cool setup so that they will be envious and ask you for it. if you have to ask them to try it, then i suspect you will forever be expected to apologise for any shortcomings.
anyway - there's a few distro's who release every six months, which gives you a chance twice a year to mention the great new version that's just been released :) - niczar, on 10/11/2008, -1/+6@frogle: "niché" means nested. "Niche" is the word you're looking for (which btw means litterally dog house). No accent.
- simg, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4shouldn't that be "En Français" ? :p
- mojoel, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4Yeah I can. There's no accent in the "niche" you're trying to use.
Dans Francais, c'est "niche". C'est ne pas "niché."
(In French it's "niche." It's not "niché.") - Giga, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4The bricking was only in a recent development release, none of the stable releases has had that bug. This release has the fix.
- GenghisTom, on 10/11/2008, -1/+5Because it's such a massive, bloated kernel they only update it every few years, and that would give it a perceived time lag behind other OSs. That's why you have to reboot windows PCs all the time: almost anything you do has to make a change to the kernel somewhere, which requires a reboot. With Linux, you can instead have modules that the kernel talks to, which can be changed without reboot (normally).
Smaller kernel = fewer reboots = Linux
On the other hand, Windows not having a kernel would explain why it runs so crappy... - hoodedrobin, on 10/11/2008, -1/+5Yeah we can... except its spelled Niche
- atbnet, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4I know most software updates don't, but there is the occasional one that wants the reboot and will bug you as well as security patches.
- mojoel, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Touché! ;)
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4Um...reboots aren't necessary for software updates.
- TheWindBlows, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3We all know its not just going to be one year but it will be spread along a period of time for acceptance. About 85% of people don't know linux can be a desktop much less what it is at all. Then out of the chunk that do know they would either like to use it but have programs holding them back dual-boot use linux or just don't give a damn about anything and most of those people who dont care haven't tried it.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3@frogle
Speaking of trolling... - GenghisTom, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Incorrect is incorrect. End of story.
- weeFred, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Do you get paid to troll frogle? I sure hope so, because if you do it just to get your jollies, that might just be the saddest thing I've ever heard.
- Flamekebab, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3I guess the number of UMPCs flying off the shelves means that no one will ever be interested in using a Linux-based desktop.
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3chance twice a year to mention the great new version that's just been released :)
I so do this lol - TheWindBlows, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3I'm using it got my friends to use it fairly simple and their not really tech inclined.
It all varies. Linux can fit like a glove with all its robustness.
The only real issues are proprietary drivers and use of instable release components. - evilgourmet, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2@Giga
Ndiswrapper is a fist step, I don't think all the manufacturers are going to port drivers or come to the table and discuss standardization.
I am thinking of a wine wrapper, that uses the drivers and translates to Linux.
it just an idea after all.
I meant wrapping in Wine, not an interface, sorry -- cli or gui, not a big deal. - Giga, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2@evilgourmet
We already have something like that, it's called ndiswrapper. I'm sure there are GUI frontends to it. Problem is, it doesn't work very well and I think it's restricted to networking drivers. It is extremely difficult to wrap Windows drivers for a different platform. - niczar, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2We don't say "touché" in French. Not in that context.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2Well those 85% shouldn't be allowed to use the internet or computers in general they ***** up the net for the rest of us!
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2That's good, because Ubuntu doesn't recognize my webcam right now. :)
- atbnet, on 10/11/2008, -2/+3This seems like a huge development if reboots are no longer necessary for software updates. This is one reason why I hate applying new updates regardless of OS because I have to shut down.
- CaptainLinux, on 10/11/2008, -1/+2Some people are posting that they don't care about this fantastic development, favoring Windoze.
I for one say that those people are just too lazy to try a Linux distribution or don't understand the concept of FOSS at all. My 2 eurocents worth. - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Neat stuff by Atheros
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1ndisgtk isn't it? Works quite well. And yes evilgourmet is a dreamer :P
- Vigacmoe, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1nice
- antdude, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Mirrors: http://kernelnewbies.org.nyud.net/Linux_2_6_27 and http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:heLfjE4C4hYJ: ...
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1The problem with Audio cards...
They mostly use the same chip maker. the chip maker won't release the specs to anyone other than clients under NDA. Push the card makers to use a different chip/
Same with WiFI.
Same with MOBO and custom BIOS/
They miss out on Millions in sales for the sake of protecting patents and so forth. It's akin to saying we want to sell a car model but are afraid if they do the people will know how they made it.. - Cherubim, on 10/11/2008, -0/+0Excellent news. I've been waiting for wifi anf flash memory changes to the linux kernel.
- ghostcool2, on 10/12/2008, -0/+0So this is no news for you, because Ubuntu already use the gspca driver (even before it hit the main kernel).
