- tarkam, on 10/10/2007, -7/+32"The soon to be released Windows Longhorn is touted to be Microsoft's answer to the Linux threat".
Fresh Article! - manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22This isn't intended as an insult to Digg (hey, I'm a fairly active user here, am I not?), but Slashdot is more the type of news site for kernel hackers. More technical, less "LOLCATZ LOL // pic". Not that that's a bad thing, it just...isn't on Slashdot. If there _are_ any kernel developers active on Digg here, feel free to prove me wrong by replying. :)
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+24Yes, it's bigger... http://lwn.net/Articles/248893/ ... and that's just full-time current hackers. It would have cost 600 million dollars to write Linux, IIRC, has it been a commercial thing. That's just the kernel (2% of Debian GNU/Linux).
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Longhorn is now the new "codename" for Windows Server 2008.
Currently in Beta 3. - JasonCox, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17"But why is he so critical of GPLv3?"
Because GPL3 sucks. I'm not sayng the software under GPL3 sucks, I'm saying the license sucks. - undetected, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Re: article title: Well, DUH!
Anyway, it's always good when people don't let their egos over-inflate. - tarkam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I guess I stand corrected, it is true: http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/05/10/19TClonghorn_1.html
- TheLoneWolf071, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13Linux is huge. If you believe that it's all Linus, you probably haven't used it linux in your life.
- Aiwanei, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The problem for the "older crowd" on Digg (the users who have been here from the begining) is that Digg was just a tech site at the start. It had the types of stories you would find on slashdot and no the LOLCATZ invasion (well not nearly as much as it is now.) I sometimes forget Digg has become more of a site for the average consumer and less of a site for us who originally came to Digg. I stick around because it still has a lot of the stories I was used to before, I just have to goto the appropriate category to read them.
- keyboardashtray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7That is the right facing Hindu Swastika, it predates the Nazi one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika
- cyrax6, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Actually it is not decorative. It is to Hindus what the ying-yang is to the Buddhists.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Microsoft can't even be innovative with its codenames.
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Not really. I could see where people could be confused. I guess Microsoft just really liked the name.

- maz2331, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8It just doesn't fit with his ideas of what he wants to accomplish. Linus is more of a pragmatist and doesn't care about the same "freedom purist" ideals that the FSF and Richard Stallman do. He just wants the best kernel in the world and figures an open source model will get it there best. So, he's not hostile to some of the things FSF is such as TiVo.
Think of FSF as really being "software socialists" and Linus as being a "software libertarian" and you get the idea. - Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I imagine the kernel developers are too busy working to be bothered jumping into the flamewars and *****-talking that is so often Digg. IMO, that's a good thing, and should probably stay that way. I'm keen to use Linux full-time, but it's still got a few quirks that means it doesn't work well for me yet.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Yin-Yang isn't Buddhism. It's Chi
- maz2331, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Actually Linus < Linux. He even says so.
Still, he's a good guy, a great programmer, and a fantastic project manager. - MrPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4http://duggmirror.com/linux_unix/LinusTorvalds_Linux_Is_Much_Bigger_Than_Me/
[EDIT]
Well; seems it came back up (said Service Unavailable) oh well - just in case. - BrainInAJar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I'm an OpenSolaris developer.
Not Linux, but still, Digg isn't entirely devoid of opensource developers - diablo75, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Yes it is. In decorative Hindu form.
- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3http://duggmirror.com/linux_unix/LinusTorvalds_Linux_Is_Much_Bigger_Than_Me/
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Why does the license suck? Care to explain how GPL2 is better than GPL3?
- GhostCow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'd always heard it attributed to Taoism
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Typical Finnish modesty.
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3http://www.microsoft.com/opensource/default.mspx
Tell that to MS. - Wyzard, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3He's one in a few billion, just like you.
- akkibaba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That's right, the Hindus have been using the symbol for about 3200 years. And for the record, we love the Jews :)
- yunus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Make sure the check pages 2-4. Page 1 really just says, Im not Indian and dont know much about India.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes but he names all his software projects after himself. First Linux and then Git.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Con is here.
- astrojith, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I love you Linus !!
P.S : ME definitely not gay k ? - mahoua, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1it's called HTML. geez, kids these days.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It doesn't discriminate on what the software is used for.
- lufthanza, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I saw Ingo Molnar on here once. True story.
- thomashauk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0With the GPL2 Your free to use the software, the only restriction is in distribution.
With the GP3 There are restrictions in the use and distibution of the software. - pej63, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Look now, please...calm yourself down...I'm not a rocket scientist, and neither is Linus Torvalds. Bear with me now...The idea of building a operating system has been around for about 50 years now. His fork...(yes, it actually is a fork) of an operating system is nothing new. This isn't a fantastic new discovery.
Excuse me for being old and stupid but...people...please...study the history of operating systems and you'll realize that this is absolutely nothing new. Seriously, are computer people completely unaware of history?
Linus is a great mind, doing a great job writing the beginning of a kernel, and having 'lots of help developing the future of it.
But, and a big BUT. This is not Rock'n Roll. He just copied something that was made about 40 years ahead of him....
I mean...hey...wake up you wankers....are you for real? - arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2They probably did it so they could sue the folks at the Longhorn Reloaded OS project.
- known, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Open source = Democracy
Closed source = Meritocracy - ratbear, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I don't know if I agree with the whole political analogy - But I would definitely buy a beer for Linus, and then spit that same beer right into Richard Stallman's hideous mug. In the echelon of social causes, software freedom is about one notch lower than your mother's PTA meetings.
- bluegene, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1of course!
- Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Pwned.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I think you find open source is a meritocracy and closed source is a marketocracy.
FOSS builds on the merit of the software. They build on it's marketability. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Who is Linus?
- T8erT0T, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2My wife left me for an IT worker who had a much bigger Linux. I'm also suffering from Kernel Dysfunction as well.
- yaddayadda, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Page 3 mentions 'The soon to be released Windows Longhorn'. I think this article might be outdated :)
- Darcy, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3Open source = Dreamers
Closed source = Realists - lordkenthegreat, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Anyone notice the weird XSS-ish thing in the page title?
- LMControl, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Dude? Is that a swastika for your profile icon?
- acidity, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Already down....mirrors?
