- BruceAnderson, on 09/16/2008, -0/+34"Linpus"? They couldn't find a name that doesn't sound like a horrible skin condition?
- svensko, on 09/16/2008, -3/+17I uninstalled it within the first hour of ownership of my Aspire One. :)
- ptFoe, on 09/16/2008, -1/+14Better of installing Ubuntu with it's vast upto date repoitories.
Dell seem to get it. - infiniphunk, on 09/16/2008, -1/+10who pissed in your cornflakes this morning?
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 09/16/2008, -1/+10I tried one of these out in a Futureshop (Canadian store - like a best buy) and was able to get root access in about a minute.
File browser, Thunar (XFCE), has a 'Open Terminal' menu entry under (IIRC) the File menu. From there, sudo didn't even require a password.
I think that if I got an Aspire One (I'm thinking about it) I'd remove the default OS and throw a UMPC-adjusted version of (X)Ubuntu on there instead. - link2009, on 09/16/2008, -0/+8See how any "retarded"
...wait, was that a pun or were you referring to yourself? - benplaut, on 09/16/2008, -0/+8Yea... when I first heard of it, I was thinking "Who the ***** came up with that name?"
- mike9173, on 09/15/2008, -1/+8i currently am using the linux limpus lite version on my acer aspire one
and i am very pleased
the only problem is that if you download new apps you have to search for them in the search bar to open them - infiniphunk, on 09/16/2008, -1/+7I saw one of these today at a store being sold side by side with an Eeepc. Looks like a nice little machine for someone who just wants the basics. And if you want more you can always open a terminal and start customizing, or install something else.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+7Well the distro is derived from linboil
- gothicknight, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6I use mine with Arch Linux, and I pretty happy how "easy" (for me at least) is to set it to work flawlessly with this piece of hardware.
Further info: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acer_Aspire_On ... - HiVoltRock, on 09/15/2008, -1/+7It would be nice if it were a little newer but for tight integration with the hardware I suppose it's not too bad. I would generally recommend a debian distributions but it's not too bad. Could use a different default theme, though. It's not very attractive.
- saturn5, on 09/16/2008, -1/+6It's sounds even worse than Mepis.
You just don't use a name that contains the word "pus". - h0dges, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4goto: http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/ for help on customising. I've installed firefox, vlc, activated compiz (as it comes preinstalled), updated the network manager to get it working with WPA2 Enterprise and it's still beautifully fast! I recommend this machine for anyone.
Brilliant recovery instructions here too: http://dailycupoftech.com/2008/09/02/diy-acer-aspi ...
Acer sell these things with XP as well if you're not the adventurous type. - Kumaku, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4I use my One for basic browsing, a few powerpoint lecture slides, and superficial research.
It works well. I have no problems. - insanebrain, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4Yups... same here. Created a Ubuntu usb-boot... works like a charm. I now even have XP inside virtualbox running and my Aspire One ;)
- courtjester555, on 09/16/2008, -2/+6Would you call users Linpussies?
- itsradBrad, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4Who slipped a chocolate hot dog into your bagel this morning?
- BHSPitMonkey, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4koick: A nice, clean drive ready for a new OS.
- arjie, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4That colour scheme looks better than the dark brown Ubuntu shots I've seen that look similar. However, the screenshots here for Ubuntu Mobile also look pretty good: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/mobile
But you know what? I've found that I like animations, they make using a device so much nicer. So if the menus slide into place and if icons zoom in bigger and things fade in or out, I think that's much nicer to use. I didn't realise this until I used Opera Mini instead of the default Symbian browser.
Do these interface do those things? - Dochtuir, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3Sudo requires a password if you set one on first boot.
- BHSPitMonkey, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3I personally find it less adventurous to use a stable linux-based OS.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4Systemic Linpus EryThemaTossUs?
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Linus pus is a aphrodisiac appreciated by many Linux geeks. How would you thought they could have sex?
- saturn5, on 09/16/2008, -3/+5Foresight Mobile edition looks better..
http://www.foresightlinux.org/img/screenshots/mobi ... - BHSPitMonkey, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Judging by the comments from the article, it seems that people in the stores selling the machines have been setting them up with blank root passwords, doing the customers a big favor. What else can you expect from retail electronics store employees?
- nattybohman, on 09/16/2008, -1/+3That name's even worse than ovaltine. No way I'm using something called "Linpus".
- scb0825, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Seriously it's called Linpus???
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+3Take that.... Front page Bitches....
- Zaggynl, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Dugg for Arch.
- apena89, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1that background is gross.
- inactive, on 10/13/2008, -1/+2If that's how you get your laughs, consider killing yourself.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1Forking for forks sake? Did you see the ***** up ubuntu layout? It frickin sucks, I hope that isn't the one they're going to include in the Dell's Mini or I will have to install Foresight on it.
Good job Foresight! Good artwork, the ubuntu artwork-team (and I use that term loosely when it comes to ubuntu) could learn a thing or two from you... - brent218, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1what would vista cripple?
- omarst, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1i got the same problem, if somebody knows how to change icons to "front page" please let us know
- ukblacknight, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1@rpgmaker
I'm sure that MID Edition isn't the one you'd see on the Dell Mini. The Ubuntu Netbook edition should be on it, which foresight seems to of almost copied!
Edit: See http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/index.php5?title=Main_Pa ... - brent218, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1im sure someone's edited that, it should have read "what wouldnt vista cripple?" but that got messed up somewhere along the line lol
- MicrosoftBob, on 09/17/2008, -0/+1Are you serious? The whole concept seems to hinge on being 'friendly'; what were the devs thinking?!
- darthchaosrspw, on 09/24/2008, -1/+2For ***** and giggles, I tried Linpus Lite on my desktop. It was merely okay. The tabbed interface looked okay but not great. But at least Linpus Lite comes with nVidia drivers.
- inactive, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1Installing Vista on this would be pointless - it simply is designed to run such a bloated os
- repustech, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Vista would cripple this device.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+0Your kidding right?
- Wallett, on 09/16/2008, -0/+0Yeah, we're all Linpussies, you wickdad. This machine is perfectly usable with an unlocked Linpus. Why people upgrade the memory, install XP or other linux distros is beyond me.It's not a full-sized laptop for crissake!
- Keithamus, on 09/16/2008, -1/+1That takes the piss! It's just Ubuntu Netbook edition with a different wallpaper!
I'm all for forking, but don't fork for forks sake! - bjzq8, on 09/16/2008, -4/+4Open Sores Software = LinPUS?
- nealev, on 01/20/2009, -0/+0I have the same problem and am not exactly a technical whizz! Any help gratefully received! Great little notebook though.
- koick, on 09/16/2008, -1/+1If you 'uninstalled' it, what did you have left??
- zcreem, on 09/16/2008, -2/+1Can anyone here tell me if the processor is up to play HD codecs such as the h264 assuming it has an external hdmi slot.
- twrife, on 09/17/2008, -2/+1I had a problem with mine so I installed XP instead and although it's a little slow, it's much better, in my opinion.
- contradictator, on 09/16/2008, -2/+1There's always OSX86 too. =D
