- evnglion, on 08/08/2008, -3/+28I've been running a laptop for around 6 months now that only has a light-weight Linux distro on it (heavily modified Ubuntu) and I have been really happy with it. The laptop it is on isn't too old for gaming, so I can do literally everything I need to do for free and legally on Linux, and its much faster than XP, to boot. Its awesome...
- scy1192, on 08/08/2008, -0/+17why.. is there an Internet Explorer 6 icon in the screenshot?
- LD1o1, on 08/08/2008, -0/+15I run DSL (Damn Small Linux) on my old Laptop (Pentium II) for browsing, email, IM, monitoring my servers, and a few other services. It's snappy and does the job well.
- cutchyacokov, on 08/08/2008, -3/+17Buried for stupidity. Reported for myspace.
- Th3_anOmoLy, on 08/08/2008, -1/+14then don't comment
- LD1o1, on 08/08/2008, -2/+15If Mac users spent 1/2 as much time learning about how to use mac alternatives as they do flapping their mouths about how great macs are, they would save a heck of a lot of money and have a system that can do everything a mac can do and more.
Macs are damn pretty. But that's about it. Apple doesn't do anything original. Apple has a very commensalism relationship with Windows, Linux, and other systems in that they rely on other companies to do the innovation and all apple/mac has to do is take those good ides, make it pretty and implement. - moolcool, on 08/08/2008, -4/+13Xubuntu>This.
- iofthestorm, on 08/08/2008, -0/+8> == greater than.
- channi, on 08/08/2008, -0/+8I'm currently using Ubuntulite on my eeePc and I'm really happy with it. Seems like there's a real market for lightweight environments. Xandros was preinstalled on my eeePC although I wasn't able to do all the tasks I wanted.. but it is also a great alternative to a windows installation.
- amirman, on 08/08/2008, -0/+7it's a window manager not a distro, silly.
- paulsmith288, on 08/08/2008, -0/+7yet another wanker
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -0/+6I am sure in time Fluxbox is very productive, but its a bit to minimal for me, Xfce is great if it would come with a network manager built in
- WoollyMittens, on 08/08/2008, -0/+5Most corporate conformists do.
- Maybelline, on 08/08/2008, -0/+4Xubuntu used to be great, until they started pulling in everything Gnome had, and basically bloated to near-Ubuntu size. On my PIII-1GHz laptop, Ubuntu runs just as fast as Xubuntu did (7.04 was the last Xubuntu I tried). Now, I'm running UbuntuLite (which uses LXDE). If it had a better Network Manager (they're working on it) it'd be perfect. And it's blazing fast (for a PIII). (Parentheses are cool.)
- Guspaz, on 08/08/2008, -0/+4My first questions were, how does this compare to XFCE or IceWM? Those ones are pretty darned lightweight, and IceWM does pretty much everything I need in a basic window manager. XFCE, on the other hand, does pretty much everything I need in any window manager.
That said, I run KDE :P - evilgourmet, on 08/08/2008, -0/+4Blackbox worked fantastic on my old 486/100mhz Thinkpad w 128m ram, and I ran Xscreensaver as the desktop background.
- kalkin, on 08/08/2008, -0/+4it makes sense to go in this direction (lightwieght i mean) with mobile devices becoming more prominent in our lives. even snow leopard is looking to reduce the osx footprint. it makes me wonder what they have in store for windows 7. with everyone going lightweight and microsoft's approach to always make the os footprint bigger they could really put the final nail in the coffin if they screw up windows 7. i really think they should make midori windows 7 - it's the only way they can survive.
- abbathdoom, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3Theres nothing even in the same sport as FCP never mind the same league. Stick to Mac if you want to edit video.
- mitchellmckenna, on 05/24/2009, -1/+4only a couple diggs and it appears to have knocked lxde.org offline
- zip000, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3I tried DSL but for some reason couldn't get it to install properly on my pentium II toshiba satellite. I ended up installing Puppy Linux, and while it has some annoyances (primarily for me I think that it isn't Debian based), I have been fairly happy with it. Very quick and responsive considering the old ass hardware, and the wireless networking was ridiculously easy.
- csrster, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3Xfce was getting too heavy even for my old 866MHz/256MB desktop machine so I switched to IceWM and couldn't be happier. But that's really only a solution if you're happy with the command line.
- borninda818, on 08/08/2008, -1/+4I tried ubuntu. It was very quick but i could never get the wifi drivers working right on my 901so i just gave up and installed XP. XP turned out to be ***** slow so i installed this performance version that someone cut down to 250 mbs. That did the trick. It's fast and support all the free and not free programs I want to put on it.
- Wargasmic, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3I tried to do the same thing but I figured out how to enter the "full desktop mode" in xandros, if you wanna know how i got it running send me a shout or something.
- MethodOne, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=a ...
- WoollyMittens, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3Does anyone know if this will run on the Asus eee pc without too much trouble?
- DaleoftheUK, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2I'd use linux on ordinary laptop, but for me there isn't a powerful enough video editor on linux, that can beat final cut for me. I know of one good video editor on linux, anyone care to point some out?
- Icetype, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2You can run IE 6 just fine in linux. But it's probably just an icon for some other browser. I see people do that all the time.
- mrBitch, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1For Apple gear, OS X FTW.
For ALL OTHER hardware, Linux distros FTW. - MattBD, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1This is basically just the Openbox window manager and a few other components put together to make a minimal desktop. I think that if you use IceWM plus a file manager and a few other basic configuration tools they'd compare well to this.
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1ubuntu 4 life, or at least until I can afford a mac.
- TRosen, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1even better, see this:
http://ubuntuos.com/index.php?option=com_content&t ... - MattBD, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1I prefer IceWM, although I'm planning on giving Fluxbox a good try in the near future.
- pHr34kY, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1God, he can't even spell 'vendor'.
- TRosen, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1have you seen kdenlive?
Check out the June 10/08 ubuntu os podcast on video editing in linux.
http://ubuntuos.com/index.php?option=com_content&t ... - LeeSoong, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1Puppy Linux is lighter and faster still :
http://www.puppylinux.org/home/overview
Fits whole OS and apps on a USB flash memory stick.
Keep your whole system on your keychain,
plug into almost any PC, reboot from the USB drive,
use your system, save your data. No Hard Drive needed.
When you shutdown and reboot the system - back it goes to the hard drive OS with no changes.
Great for use in PC labs, libraries, etc that allow you to use your own software. More secure and less intrusive. - abbathdoom, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Check out Ubuntulite for a good distro using this WM. Other wise check out Xubuntu, my favourite distro of all.
- TheWindBlows, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1Fluxbox is a window manager. LXDE is a desktop environment.
- meetaswin, on 08/08/2008, -0/+0Xubuntu - FTW
having said that, we should appreciate the work of developers in developing LXDE. - dmorris68, on 04/07/2009, -0/+0Umm, ever heard of Cinellera? It's been used for high-end video editing and post-production for years, and has won numerous awards in the field, including one from the National Association of Broadcasters in 2004. It's also the editing software bundled with some professional turnkey video production systems.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinelerra
Not making a direct comparison to FCP since I've never used it, but to imply that proper video editing isn't possible on Linux, much less anything other than a Mac, reeks of vapid fanboism. - TheWindBlows, on 08/09/2008, -1/+1The guy just wants to know what evnglion's setup is.
Oh well moo moo cow fart. - Plasmodia, on 08/08/2008, -2/+1Surrrrre. I think someone cut your cables for internet that are found under water.
- Dohko_Xar, on 08/08/2008, -5/+2I bet this won't work out of the box for the eee PC's... too many driver problems involved.
- Darkhacker, on 08/08/2008, -4/+1"it's the only way they can survive."
Survive what? The UMPC market? It's true that MS really dropped the ball on that one but you almost make it sound as though the entire company is at risk because of it. Even with its criticisms, Vista has sold over 180 million copies. - inactive, on 08/08/2008, -4/+1Didn't they say if Vista Flopped it would make microsoft go out of business.....
Im using Vista so these comments are making me laugh! - Monty7, on 08/08/2008, -7/+3Fluxbox > than any other desktop manager
- known, on 08/08/2008, -7/+1Could you please share the output of
pkg-query --show --showformat='${Package;-50}t${Installed-Size}t${Status}n' | sort -k 2 -n | grep "install ok installed" | awk '{printf "%.3f MB t %sn", $2/(1024), $1}'
im.ubuntu@gmail.com - deepleet, on 08/08/2008, -7/+0But can it run Crysis?
- Roger, on 08/08/2008, -13/+6Another lightweight desktop environment? Seems like they don't stay lightweight for too long.
