- OminousG, on 10/10/2007, -2/+62I'm a librarian and I read digg, whats the big deal?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30If i was a librarian, and i had nothing to do all day, i would read digg for sure =)
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26Haha, you live in your mom's basement
/fail. - Malachai, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21By the way, I've already mentioned that Ubuntu does not mean "people friendly." I know people are going to make a big deal of it anyway.
There is also an interview with a local news station: http://dothanfirst.com/content/fulltext/?cid=7340
And, yes, diggers. The quality of everything might not be up to par with what you're "used to," but remember this is local news. - dantidote, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Same here, it's not my life long career, but it's money.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Well, I'd read, you know, books! Things that are actually worthwhile to me.
- rstarr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12All I know is you librarians are hiding something...
- voldak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I'm also a new-found librarian. I am a tech guy/librarian. And same goes for me...it's not a life long career...it is money. :)
- zip000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Yep, I'm another librarian that reads digg,
- qwertydvorak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10only when she (in slow motion) pulls off her black framed glasses, and pulls the pin out of her hair so it falls, and then shakes it around. at least that's what i learned from the tv.
- Malachai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Sorry, guys. I don't know why that was hard for me to believe. I guess I generally see librarians as sweet, serene, gentle individuals, and Digg as a den of wolves. Kind of like a nun going to a strip club.
Oops. I just stereotyped. Sorry. - wheel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9It wasn't that the librarian used Windows 98. I'm sure that it was just the library that was using it, and this person was in charge of IT at the library.
- maccam94, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8i hope http://www.duggmirror.com got it, as it's down at 53 diggs...
- traldan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11I work in a library - we moved all our public PC's to Ubuntu over a year ago. Similarly, we're planning to move all staff to Ubuntu soon.
www.hclibrary.org/oss2oss.php - brutalentropy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9So does that mean you're the janitor too?
- qwertydvorak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9dugg for strip club nuns
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8librarians can be sexy

- Mononuclear, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I am the marketing VP of google
- CatalystGhost, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9No, I'M Spartacus!
- rabidjade, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9[Insert job title here] switched to Linux. Let's all orgasm over it.
- TheBigBrother, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7no, I am
- Malachai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Christian Ubuntu is not a web filter. It actually IS a Christian-themed Ubuntu. I think the named suits it.
- qwertydvorak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6"Must we report on every person who decides to use Ubunutu as opposed to Windows?"
you just did at the end - 2012, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Since it has been over 3 hours since the last post here and it looks like this is sliding off of the front page...
My confession: I am the librarian that took a teeny tiny little rural library from windows 98 to Ubuntu 6.06 with success. I am very overwhelmed by the response here. Because we are a very small rural library, our Technology department has a grand total of ... one person. Me.
So if the level of sophistication is missing here that you are used to, well, pardon me. It doesn't really matter anyway, because the patrons that use our library now more than ever are very happy with what has been done.
Patron computer usage in October 2005 ---------- 99
Patron computer usage in July 2007 ---------------- 451
Patron computer usage in August 2007 ------------ 428
That is a lot of people for a small rural town of 4000! Thanks for all the positive comments here and thanks for the unusual number of Diggs. - TheMeatball, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Librarian judges townsfolk based on their book-returning habits.
What is this, The Onion? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Those stuffy old librarians will routinely shock you with how savvy they are when it comes to technology.
- maccam94, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Working mirror: http://genevapubliclibrary.org.nyud.net:8080/content/view/37/50/
- eatbeefjerky, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Dugg for the "Christian Ubuntu" web filter. They couldn't come up with a better name?
But in all seriousness, this is pretty darn cool. Three cheers for open source. - mwdqk3, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10librarian = geek ---- geeks use digg
Why is this a big deal? - msauers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yet another librarian who Diggs saying hey.
- oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4“The speed of these machines is just unbelievable. I have one Windows machine left and--that’s in my office. And I don’t want to use it because it’s so slow compared to the other ones. So when there’s nobody in the library, I go and use one of the patron machines to get work done"
- i'm not surprised - imagine all that spyware on those Windows 98 machines. - scott715, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Ubuntu 7 Desktop has proven to me that Linux is absolutely ready for "regular" users. It's just so freakin' easy.
- 8270369, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Why does it sound like dantidote and voldak are apologizing for being librarians? Jesus, library sciences is a monstrous line of study not for the faint of heart, and I have unending respect for anyone who can complete a bachelors, masters or, gods forbid, phd in the field. The old fashioned stereotype of an old lady with thick glasses putting books on shelves died some time in the 1950s. Library sciences is typically on the cutting edge of the world of information, how we manage it and consume it.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3Everyone knows they have the Ark of The Coven-
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8Reading Digg is better than answering stupid kids questions.
- maybeway36, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think you mean 7.04. The version numbers are actually dates.
- stray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm a librarian and I wish I had nothing to do all day. However--and I know this comes as a shock--it is a job and my day is full.
- theotherbastard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I guess this makes the whole world by now!
At least I would think it is with the number of these stories that make the Digg front page. - zip000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Oh, I forgot to mention - I use Ubuntu too at home...though we're stuck with Windows here at work.
- 2012, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Just curious... but why did you comment on something you don't care about? Really Why??
Oh and I am getting what I paid for. Computers that get used 5 days each week for nine hours each of those days and I have not seen a BSoD since I got what I paid for. - manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Should we take a survey? Anyone want to announce if they're the Marketing VP of HP or whatever?
- Malachai, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Windows 98? I sure hope not.
- asaturn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2too bad they didn't switch their web server to linux
- LibrarianAnna, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ha - I'm a librarian, who loves technology, digg, google and all things techie - and I'm female too :-)
Sorry guys I'm already taken :-P - fluxion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ahh, okay, the rollout also included buying some new computers.
- sedatedgodzilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Digg librarian checking in...
- jimbo92107, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Aw, that was a nice story! Go Linux, go Ubuntu!
- oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i hardly see digg as a den of wolves, more a bunch of childish boys. Librarians have to deal with those types all the time, giggling at the rude bits in Harold Robbins books, and reading the teenage magazines their sisters won't let them read.
Yes I worked in a library once, the qualified librarian sometimes conforms to the stereotype. Except the one i worked with signed her christmas cards as from miss whiplash. I never wanted to ask why - maybeway36, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I suppose the librarian knew what it was, but the article writer assumed it was the name of the filter.
