- ekso, on 10/11/2007, -9/+94You have problems with ATI drivers? Solution is simple:
Buy a nVidia. - miga, on 10/11/2007, -1/+40or they should support the opensource driver: http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=avivo/xf86-video-avivo.git;a=summary with specs
- Zettablade, on 10/11/2007, -3/+31I too have many issues with ati's drivers. The biggest now is that I cannot upgrade my kernel without losing dri. Unacceptable.
Here's ati's PR managers email. Let's do something.
jon.carvill@amd.com - Dankoozy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27I don't even look at ATI cards anymore. got a 7800gt a few weeks ago and it works fine. even the fx5200 can run compiz fusion
- jull1234, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20No no no. That is just bad for everyone. We really need 2 closely matched rivals in the high-end gaming video card market to keep everything progressing.
- ZephyrNinety, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20ATI blows. Their hardware is ***** and their drivers are a joke. And yes, some Linux users do play games. Steam runs perfectly for me.
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18NO we are all for choice and better competition.
- Zuggy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Something else to do besides just telling them to comply or we won't buy (I was a poet and didn't know it) is to appeal to their business side. Tell them that if they were to make better linux drivers or open source them that they would be opening up more business opportunities in high end graphics rendering since many (most?) computer graphics studios use Linux servers for rendering. To be honest I think that's the only reason nVidia's Linux Drivers are so good.
However don't take what I say as gospel, since I don't do 3D animation I'm just talking out my butt. Yet what comes out is usually close enough to the truth and sounds so good that people believe anyway *pats self on shoulder* - fucter, on 10/11/2007, -6/+22Why bother, just buy nvidia. And recommend nvidia to poeple who dont even use linux. Then when ati market share goes down we wont even have to worry about them because everyone will be using nvidia chips.
in other words: let that company go the ***** out of business.
also, not every thing has to be ***** open source. Thats the pone thing I cant stand about that community is that they demand every ***** thing be open source, just be glad that some companies provide you with a driver, because most don't. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19Exactly right. Nvidia have won this war. Leave it at that.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19They should stop making promises unless they actually deliver improvements. Based on recent Phoronix reviews, CCC is the only real improvement . Too slow, too little, too late. ATI's former CEO has just quit AMD.
- profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17All I want for Christmas is a fixed aspect ratio option. A lot of games (especially Starcraft) look totally fugly on my widescreen monitor. I've looked on many a forum for fixes to this, and the consensus is that ATI needs to get their ***** together. How hard is it to letterbox the sides of the screen?
- artoisval, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14My way of "convincing" ATi is to just bought Nvidia card. So far I already bought 5 gfx card with nvdia chip. Because I whant true 3d support in Linux. And I dislike it closed source driver, but they have a working Linux driver.
- aschmack, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15This is about Linux, not vista.
- Carpex, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Instead of flooding an inbox, here's a link to AMD/ATI Linux Crew Driver Feedback Program:
http://support.ati.com/ics/survey/survey.asp?deptID=894&surveyID=508&type=web - muty, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11dude this is about ati's linux drivers
- cenarta, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13This will eventually happen as Linux gains more market share on the desktop. I just hope it is sooner rather than later, and I am crossing my fingers and hoping that ATI open sources their drivers for Linux, so that nVidia is pressured to follow suit and open source their drivers as well. Then maybe we can get laptops suspending and hibernating correctly in Linux without spending countless hours figuring out workarounds.
- georgebnet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8We would be less interested in open source drivers if the authors of the binary drivers would be able to make quality software. NVidia for example doesn't seem to be bothered that suspend-to-ram and suspend-to-disk does not work with their drivers. If the drivers were open they would have been fixed long ago.
Also remember the emu10k fiasco? Drivers need to communicate with the rest of the kernel. Open source drivers can do that much better than closed source ones can. Binary drivers will fail miserably every time something changes in a dependent kernel subsystem. - sychodelix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Damn straight. You'd think people would have enough sense to avoid any video card manufacturer that can't even write drivers without tons of bugs.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+8Heh, makes me glad to hear that. I just bought a EVGA Geforce 8800 GTS :]
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9what kick ass hardware???
i feel so bad for AMD, what a terrible acquisition. - jhuebel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8There are many rendering tools now that can offload rendering to the GPU, which performs those operations much more efficiently.
- thripper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9let's buy nvidia
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11I don't see Linux drivers on his site
- crossmr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Nvidia sure has a spotless record. Like how they have a 2 year old issue with their drivers they're only addressing now, which caused issues with countless games, and seemingly struck randomly. Here is some background: http://bbs.thesims2.ea.com/community/bbs/messages.php?threadID=06c442234ffa7adb4557aaac3804ab89&directoryID=21&startRow=1&openItemID=item.21,item.61,item.41,item.127,item.23#0f96f0db5a9a764180a58842a7683dea
and the google search on the problem:

2 years. Yeah, Nvidia sure is the promised land.
(for the record I just bought an 8800 GTX to replace my x800GT, so I don't play favourites) - HPCELarry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6It would be great if a lot of the games supported widescreen as well.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Exactly, but wake me up when ATI become in one of those 2 closely matched rivals...
- geehossiphats, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6i convinced them last month when I was forced to buy an nvidia card for my latest linux-based project. If ATI doesn't want my $$, fine, i'll just give it to their competition. Whatever works.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yes, Nvidia will tell you how much money they'd lose if they supported GNU+Linux.
- EvanCarroll, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Smart people, those experienced with Linux, won't buy ATI anyway. It's the fact that ATI is on so many prospective migrants computers that really stings us. ATI has ignored the community so long that repairing their reputation would be a massive task, so it is almost better for them to discourage Linux.
Broadcom is in the same boat. No half-brained linux user would buy a product with either one of these chipsets in them, and that same half-brain should keep the user weary of those two companies for many years to come. - toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12psh hell no. It's all about the Intel Family Chipset, dude.
- mastercheif, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6retard, we are asking them to give us their driver so we can work on it instead of them.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7you sould feel sorry for ATi cause they are the one getting screwed with the AMD deal.
- OrangeTide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I've not had much luck with the Windows drivers for ATI either. So I quit buying them years ago. Intel GMA and nVidia for me only. why Intel? it's a great low-end desktop chip that is fully documented with open source drivers and is very power friendly. Not really that great for the latest games. (runs counterstrike and quake3 like a champ though)
- halik, on 10/11/2007, -8/+13Please stop this idiotic crap - do you really think that annoying some guy will make ATI give up trade secrets? It will not happen - they already release linux drivers (net loss for the company) for the 1% of people that use them on linux.
Don't like it? Well then buy nvidia or whoever supplies better linux drivers. - gr3yn3t, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Thats not the point. The point is for better linux drivers... namely full support for fusion, and better 3d support
- bapplebo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Ever since I bought my ATi card, I have regretted it. I knew something was wrong when it overheated within twenty minutes of installation.
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7You better watch your back. You just pissed off a lot of people with no reason to live.
;) - mwdcodeninja, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Ok, so I'll post this here. Digg me down if you want.
I'm running a mac pro. Would love to switch to nVidia. I would love to upgrade the card in the mac to support a high end nVidia for Windows gaming and still have it run stable when booted to OS X. Does anyone know if the open source drivers that are on the market could support an nVidia card capiable of DX10 in OS X?
If so, please point me in the proper direction.
Thanks - phinn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Since neither of these things are going to happen I buy NVIDIA. They made the best hardware and the best software right now.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5ATI is the direct rival to Nvidia right now but definitely they're not matched. Nvidia is superior to them in almost any aspect and on top of that they give you a badass driver (for windows and linux). I hope Intel take more seriously the GPU market because they don't need much effort to beat ATI, they just suck. Intel does have open drivers too so I go for them.
- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I bought a Dell laptop before they started offering Ubuntu on them. Inspiron 1501. Comes with an ATI card and an AMD processor (obviously). Ubuntu did a great job at detecting all the drivers, but having Beryl, Kiba-Dock or even just KDE's compositing was a pain in the ass. And when i managed to get it to work, it's really crappy. ATI lost pretty much all my esteem, and AMD collaterally did as well. My next laptop/computer will have an nVidia for sure. If they think they can afford to ignore a whole community, so be it.
- azemute, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's not that they "don't suck" it's that they "Suck less".
Besides, the Omega Drivers aren't primarily developed by ATI, they're partially third-party. - spikes, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9Tell me what this article has to do with Windows?
- Wootery, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Which GPUs do they use?
afaik, Intel's GPUs are the only ones with open drivers. - IMustBeEmo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I hate to say it, but DAMiT. Why AMD went with ATi is beyond me. That was probably the stupidest decision ever. And recently AMD bought a random company who nobody's ever heard of. AMD has been going downhill since Intel's Core line.
If AMD had partnered with nVidia, that would have been a piano falling on Intel's balls. - idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6It is not a matter of giving up trade secrets. Don't you think nvidia and their other competitors have already reverse-engineered their cards to hell and back? In fact, nvidia could probably write their own ati drivers if they wanted.
- vypergts, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Alright, but can we go after HP next? Seriously their drivers have reached a new level of hell and should be considered a crime.
This new printer is driver-ing me nuts... - JonForTheWin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6>demand every ***** thing be open source
What do you think we are windows users?
We give the companies money, not the other way around. We make the demands. - felyduw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's the reason for them not be open source but that's not the reason why their linux binary drivers suck. There's no excuse for that.
