- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -8/+32MS tainted SUSE............UNACCEPTABLE!
- deadowl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22I've seen more Thinkpads running Linux than any other brand of computer already. Seems like common sense.
- thinman1189, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20SUSE, Lindows and Xandros shouldn't be used for as defaults for computer manufactures since Microsoft is restricting what they can and can't use under their agreement.
Either put Redhat, Fedora or Ubuntu on them, but not SUSE. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17SUSE, Linspire, and Xandros are unacceptable MS tainted distros. There are excellent distros with much higher integrity that can be used, the MS owned distros should be avoided.
- crankycookie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10The design may be ugly- but in the corporate world I doubt you want a lime green laptop that plays "louie louie" every time you boot up.
The thinkpad design is sturdy and very reliable. Its made that way for a purpose... - Heilige, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14Lenovo made a bad move, nobody wants Novell software anymore after their anti-open source agreement with Microsoft
- acid0426, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Lenovo makes laptops under the IBM umbrella........ella.......ella.......ella.......a..........a........a
- Vasant56, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9@Noonbuntu
Is the design really outdated? If you ask me the design may not be cutting edge, but its timeless. Look at the formerly styleish clamshelled like apple notebooks and tell me which you would rather have. Anything thats in style goes out of style. - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14They made an identical announcement last year but retracted after Microsoft probably called them behind the scenes. Remember how Microsoft said they would whack Dell?
“I’m thinking of hitting the OEMs harder than in the past with anti-Linux. … they should do a delicate dance”
–Joachim Kempin, Microsoft OEM Chief
“We should whack them [Dell over Linux dealings], we should make sure they understand our value.”
–Paul Flessner, Senior Vice President, Server Applications Unit - Genma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6actually I find it odd that Dell made this move before them.
- TBolt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7The ThinkPad is simple, sturdy and - most importantly - comfortable to use. They can leave it alone as far as I'm concerned. Although, it would be nice if they improved the speakers.
- Vasant56, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7When IBM still owned the Thinkpads they were always very supportive of Linux, particularly Redhat. My T42 has no windows button, but it does have left two buttons to switch screens in Linux. Since IBM already supported, it makes it so much easier for Lenovo to do the same.
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It implies that without such agreement they *would* sue each others customers. While I don't think this is true, it is a good way to scare people away from using Linux without paying for "Microsoft's IP"
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8I read the link: "Covenant not to sue each others _customers_ over patents."
The MS tainted distros are taking MS money to help spread anti-Linux patent FUD. Linux users should not reward such bad behavior, they should use distros that help open source, not betray open source. - arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Well, despite them publicly backtracking, some of their machines have been 'SUSE-certified' for a long time now.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6For the record, Red Hat has been the biggest contributor to open source EVER. you fail, sir
- kelpdip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I sort of miss the days when you didn't need a separate bag for the notebook, just toss in in with your books. Try that with a modern paper thin plastic case. Thinkpads have the best (non ruggedized) case out there, something that most manufacturers skimp on. Reason I will never recommend a Toshiba.
- gcnaddict, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Lenovo owns the IBM personal computer line. IBM sold it off in order to make some money back because they were losing out.
They're not even branded as IBM thinkpads anymore. They're just Lenovo thinkpads... but they're still just as good. - killerofkiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Reply button:
It's the Cool thing to do! - zenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Hmm... I stand corrected.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5***** i have OCD and i just said that 11204324325 times!
- kestrel127, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Say this 11204324325 times as fast as you can: Lenovo Laptop Linux
- Noobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6CyberPhoenix, you dirty triple poster. Use the 3rd level comments for your disputes with single people.
- MackPrime, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7SUSE ? NERDRAGE
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4what a strange move to post a link to your opinions when most of them are just wrong and the only other one (hardware support) is about to be made obsolete by news such as this.
- killerofkiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Dont diss the IBM logo. it's simple, retro and to the point. and the simple black cases are kinda intimidating. where else can you get a flat black, but sturdy [ No cheap plastic snapons or ugly decals] and powerful laptop?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7MS is using the patent deals to spread FUD, claiming Linux violates mythical patents that MS will not show us. People should not use distros that help MS with their sleazy anti-Linux campaign. There are many distros available, why use the distros that betray open source?
- Meep3D, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4My old thinkpad was possibly the best engineered laptop I have ever used. It also seemed to gain character with the dents and scratches, unlike current notebooks which just look like ***** after the silver paint has scraped off.
Sturdy metal hinges, tough plastic (not this thin silver painted crap), a mini keyboard light (fn+f12 - bottom left- top right keys so you can find it in the dark), dual catches on the lid to make sure it stays shut, but intelligently designed so you could undo each one in turn, thus open it with one hand, not festooned with that pointless windows key, Not only that but the top made an excellent skinning up board. You also get the feeling you can run over it with a truck and it would be fine. What more could you want? - tdgx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Because there is absolutely no possible way writing a check for $350 million dollars will make somebody say what you want them to say, right?
Name the last 3 competitors Microsoft "partnered" with that either didn't get disemboweled and destroyed, or acquired and repackaged as Microsoft's own product.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novell%2C_Inc.#Agreement_with_Microsoft - trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I agree that Linux may not be the best choice for everyone, but your "reasons" do nothing more than show your ignorance, either that or you are a troll.
- mscman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Evidently you don't use Linux, or else you would also be smart enough to check your grammar.
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ah, but the rest do not matter.
- kelchm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Now if Lenovo could just ship my T61p....
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1tdgx: the question of MS being some evil patent geniuses who have secretly already outsmarted Novell is just childish, but it's still covered in the FAQ.
jdhore1: why do you think that proves anything I said wrong? It's disputable in itself, but I never said Novell was THE biggest contributor, I said they were one of the biggest EVER, which they are. With regard to the Linux _desktop_ they've done a LOT more than Red Hat anyway. Both are amazing companies.
manicallday: why? Novell have made a deal, and it's turned out very well for them. Their stocks shot up, they've got more Linux engineers now than before, they've got more money to make their product better, more SUSE Linux Enterprise copies being sold. They haven't exactly done badly, have they? - fishbert, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1On the one hand, I agree with you that Novell is to be shunned.
On the other hand, the move does increase the mainstream exposure of the Linux OS. - cantormath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you mean sell more linux laptops. the t-60p is sold as a linux latop. This is good news.......
- drnoelkelly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Er - I think you should read and absorb the comments left at the bottom of your other post. Then read them again. And again.
- KaneElson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It's a good step forward. Suse wouldn't be my choice of operating system but I think it is a good choice for the less technically minded.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wrong. They'll be popular in business environments because of the deal with MS. Companies love avoiding suits.
Me, I've been using SUSE since before the MS deal and I'm not going to change because of it - apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -8/+9Nonsense. Read some FAQs: http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1>Isn't SUSE a partially owned Microsoft product now?
Could you be any more clueless? A "business" deal on interopability and covenant not to sue each others' customers and that means Microsoft "owns" Novell? Come on. Read http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS - manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I stopped reading here
"Novell have sold out to Microsoft"
"No, they have simply made a deal with them..."
That's really funny. - arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And got it right too!
- SteveMax, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I'd rather have a Lenovo laptop with OpenSUSE than a Dell with anything, but that's just me.
- Kishoba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Mines being shipped 8/17. I can't wait!
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0You are. Read http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS to understand.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0SUSE Linux Enterprise is by FAR the most popular Linux desktop in the _enterprise_ market. You really don't have a clue, do you?
- rectodigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0But in some countries it's just a miracle.
- rectodigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0***** happens..
