- notBrit, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Who needed a leaked memo to learn that Microsoft was against cross-platform programming?
- nixfu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It's real... its also pretty old. This document came out in the evidence presented by the states that held out and did not agree to the oignial microsoft anti-trust agreement.
I remember first reading this doc on the website of an state attorney general office...maybe Colorado. - martalli, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10This is a very interesting read...if in fact it is real. Notably, this was written in the final days of Netscape, so their concern for the threat posed by Netscape is a little ironic. They came out on top in that particular confrontation (Netscape went open source in January 1998).
However, the disinterest in Vista reads like it was from today. Much of their concern has come true. People utilize web-based applications more and more. However, nothing beats a real computer for getting on the Internet (as opposed to WebTV or game consoles, for example).
Microsoft should consider why people continue to buy Windows computers over Linux and OSX...which is primarily familiarity (IMHO), and what their weaknesses are. The cross platform issues have increased in some ways and decreased in others (both Sun and Apple use x86 now).
Ten years on, Gates et al may have very different opinions, but as a bit of history, this is intresting...
...if it is not a fake. - holydope, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8"I am available to talk about any of this. On our current path, I just don't feel that Windows can win. Given the exec retreat I thought I would send this to you for your thoughts."
That's beautiful, even if it is from 1997. - noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6It is still very valid as Microsoft has still failed to quit some of its anti-competition practices.
- funchords, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5When this was written, Windows 95 was the consumer product. Windows NT was their server product. Microsoft's chief fear at the time was that the WWW and Java was going to replace their Office and database applications. (There was a lot of hype about Java as the cross-platform solution for everything -- although it wasn't quite cross-platform and the applications weren't there.)
I can only assume that the company's tone has changed in the 10 years that has passed since this memo. However, it does explain the Microsoft that everybody hated. This memo acknowledges what the customer wants -- and says that Microsoft's executive position is to ignore the customer. Their strategy was to lock the customer into proprietary solutions. - rieuwa, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I didn't even have to look down to know who the submitter of this article was..
- vassar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Bill doesn't know the difference between lost 'site' vs. 'sight' of? Maybe he should have taken the refresher English course at Harvard.
- 4DFX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You sound like 95% of all cars in the world are Fords.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1OMG! That'd be ***** crazy, we'd need like some sort of 'screwdriver' that goes backwards.
- Avor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2It would be like Ford making their bolts screw in backwards just to ***** with people and make it that much more difficult.
- Lockick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Maybe I'm just cold hearted, but this really doesn't scare me. Microsoft is a business, they are trying to remain a successful business, and in a capitalistic society, trying to make sure that the customer only uses your products isn't evil, it's just business. I don't think Microsoft is or ever was an evil organization bent on world domination, I think it was just a very successful business, and was trying to remain that way.
- eth3l, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1They should do like Apple ... (sarcasm)
- alwaysmc2, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Look at the date. 1997? People change, and so do companies. Look at Silverlight. That works in Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux under IE and Firefox.
- uselessexpert, on 10/10/2007, -8/+5BURIED! This ***** is 10 years old, and some people are still obsessed with this. GET OVER IT!!!
- 7of7, on 10/13/2007, -10/+5You mean Ford doesn't want to be forced to make parts for Toyota cars? I'm shocked!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -13/+1***** off.
