  • merreborn, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1dmidecode is great. It can tell you everything -- which of your memory banks are open (great if you don't want to shut down a running server, but you want to see if you can upgrade it), serial numbers, part numbers...

    If you need to id some hardware in your system, it's actually a *lot* easier to run dmidecode than it is to try and crack the case open and read part numbers on chips/PCBs.

    Especially if you're SSHing into the system from thousands of miles away...

I've found much of that information to be useful for helping people though. I'm trying to think the last time I used reset. I'm thinking that is more of a putty on MS Windows need.
