- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34yeah, sorry man i was being a prick.
I apologize - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27Kubuntu is great!
A free Operating System that's free to upgrade and they even send you it for free!
What does Microsoft offer that can ever begin to compare to this?
Is that crickets I hear? - RatBagu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I'm going to donate $15 because I requested one to be shipped to me. I'm currently using Ubuntu, but I've never been a fan of Gnome, I prefer KDE.

Just because he has differing opinions from your own, doesn't allow you to write a retarded comment like that. But since you started it, I'll finish it. First off, mate, your comment is barely coherent -- if you were trying (at all) to write an intelligent comment you could have used the God damn spell check.
Seriously, you can't even spell probably. Go away moron. - energeek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Dude some of us are still in developing countries without broadband, u must be american, not knowing anything about the world
- Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"Because maybe some people don't have a CD Burner."
With a 32bit PC, 64bit PC and an Apple G4 I think he could afford a CD burner, if not included with the PCs themselves. - sbutcher, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Why the personal attacks?
Kubuntu is the perfect antidote to buying an expensive OS that will suffer the same malware and security issues as the other Microsoft OS that have gone before it.
It is also a good OS if you prefer not to steal software (Office, photoshop, etc), but can't justify the high price tag of such programs
Currently I run dual-boot with XP because i already had a legit license given to me - allows me to play some online games. But I won't buy vista because i don't think its worth the ££
Try it, you might like it.
I will be upgrading when the new release comes out. - jmonw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I don't like that they removed the custom order. I have a 32bit PC, 64bit PC and an Apple G4 and .....

Or you could just download the iso's and save them some money. Why would you order CD's for all of those? - feenikz4180, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11its made it to the front page...
great.. now lots of people who will never try out the ubuntu distro will also request 10 CDs.. just for the heck of it...
because its 'free' and then kill the project. - rrobster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Very cool, but it will be quite an expense for them to do this.
- Ir0n_mE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Kubuntu sent my school about 100 Cd's for free. Kudos to them for initiatives like this.
- int19h, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Three things:
- I've tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu, and so far Xubuntu is my favorite.
- You can make *ubuntu look like any other *ubuntu by installing the right packages
- It's cool that they are shipping CD's - DiddyWolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I guess I'll just give all the extras to my local computer store to hand out but I don't like that I have to order so much."
I thought that's why they want you to order a bunch of them? The want you to hand em out to people who haven't tried ubuntu/kubuntu yet. I ordered 10 ubuntu cds a few months back and handed the ones i didn't need out to my teachers and friends. :) - jjkurtz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's funny that Kubuntu can send a free cd to your door for free and people can still find things to bitch about. "They won't let me customize my order"
Some people just can't be pleased.
But Kubuntu is a great distro. It's very lightweight but it doesn't require much Linux knowledge to beef it up. If you've never used Linux before, it's a great one to begin with.
It used to be that Debian was hard to install but easy to maintain once you got it installed. Kubuntu gives you the best of both worlds, an easy installer and ease of maintenence. - Godel, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15@DVRDude:
Absolutely, we don't need anyone who can't affor broadband here, let those poor bastards rot in hell where they belong. - patjamas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"If you don't have access to broadband and don't know how to burn your own CDs, you shouldn't be allowed to vote or comment on Digg."
Parts of America still don't have broad band jackass, what Digg can do without is ignorant ***** like yourself. - Mastershredder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If there's anyone out there who's never used Ubuntu or Kubuntu, go immediately download the ISO's and check it out. It's basically the linux distro that's made for people who are familiar with Windows OS's and want to learn linux. Two thumbs up for me.. it runs fantastic on my IBM Thinkpad.
- clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"What does Microsoft offer that can ever begin to compare to this?"
Compatibility with everything everyone needs/wants to use. Something to do on the second tuesday of every month.. Ice cream. I ran out of comparisons. - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is great for those that don't have access to fast Internet connections.
I recommend that you only take advantage of this if you really need it... I'd hate to see ubuntu waste a needless amount of money on shipping to people that could otherwise download and burn the lastest release when it could be spend on development efforts. - redpillpopper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Appearances counts. It is easier to persuade friends and family to accept a professional looking cd. It will help legitimize the distribution. No one wants a generic cd-r with your crappy handwritting on it.
- Naruto28, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Free CDs for Ubuntu (Gnome desktop) and Edubuntu (educational flavor) are available as well:
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
https://shipit.edubuntu.com/ - miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Ratbagu ... KDE will be in your copy of ubuntu. when you get to the logon page, change the 'session'. If that doesnt work, go into the synaptic thing and install KDE. Its there.
I have Gnome, KDE and Fluxbox installed. - jcraveiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You could order way more with Breezy, and they still made it 'til Dapper, didn't they? ;)
- ArcticWolf_0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Its just too bad you can't order more than 10 discs. I had a great time giving out the 150 Ubuntu disks I ordered to every person I saw. I threw a sticky note in with my email address and asked them to let me know how they liked Ubuntu, and I have to say I got alot of thank you emails.
- adababoom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5ur obviously from another country because u automatically assume that if ur close minded u must be an American
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3chris9902 That was cool of you to apologize. I think that is the first apology I have ever seen in a message board. Anyways this program is bad ass. I ordered Ubuntu cd's through them and handed them out to all of my computer friends. Right now I have Ubuntu x64 dual booted with XP Pro x64, once I get my wifi card to work with Ubuntu I will be using strictly Ubuntu except for gaming. I will not be purchasing Vista (at least I can't see myself at this point) and the only way it is going to get installed on my system is if I can DL free through the MSDN. I can't justify spending $200+ on an operating system for a game that is two years old. Most games that come out in the next few years are still going to support XP, hell most games nowadays still support 2000.
- mmurch03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love this project. I order as many as I can and hand them out to people who've never used Linux (or that want a different flavor) and tell them to use the live CD first. It's good stuff...I only hope I'm responsible for a few converts.
Order the Cd's in bulk, the more the merrier, and hand them out to friends, family and co-workers. They're neatly packaged and the text on the CD case is good at explaining what ubuntu is all about. I've never had anyone turn me down when I offered it to them. - jfritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All of you are seeming to forget that they did this with the original Ubuntu at least two years ago, and look what it did for their popularity and publicity. I didn't even know Ubuntu existed before they started offering and shipping CDs, and the story is the same with Kubundu.
- RBasil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I got 10 free Ubuntu CD's last year and converted 3 people. Just requested 5 Kubuntu CD's so let's see how many more people I can convert away from Windows. :)
- aplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is great. I've tried Ubuntu and it was a good OS but I no longer have that linux machine. I'll give Kubuntu a shot, I haven't tried anything based on KDE yet.
- Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a great program I just ordered 10 kubuntu discs and 10 ubuntu discs, I ordered a 15 pack of breezy discs a while back and managed to convert 4 people to linux, and 3 others are duel boothing with these next ones it should be even more people converted since the kubuntu looks so polished (I prefer gnome but I do admit that kde looks really good) Now that they are taking orders for dapper everyone should make an order for a couple to hand out, they are much more proffessional for handing out than burnt CD's. Oh yeah don't forget to make a donation this is a costly thing for the company to be doing.
- jcraveiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FAQ says they will enable the custom/large quantities soon, but you'll have to present a reason for a big request. I'll probably really need more than 10 CDs for a Dapper LIP. ;)
- kckman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2when Dapper Drake is released. Doing this now results in a download of Breezy Badger (5.10). Not a bad choice though, using it here in both Kubuntu and Ubuntu (GNOME)
- underdog5004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, last time they were doing free shipping, I got 5 livecds and 5 install cds (Breezy Badger 5.10)...they came about a month and a half later...which is not bad, considering they were from France...
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2novell enterprise != suse
- optikburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2just give the extra CDs to friends.. that's what Ubuntu/Kubuntu wants us to do..
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember when they did this with Ubuntu. I knew about Linux, but never tried it, and since I only had a laptop, I was kinda afraid to install it, but they also included the live cd. I was impressed and some friends showed me how to dual boot between Windows and that.
They are doing a good thing, they want to encourage people to try linux and it is very easy to use. On top of that, they ship you the CD's for free. What could be better? I know some people have a slow connection and can't download the cd, but you have nothing to loose if you order just one CD. I hope they keep doing this, the word "Linux" needs to spread out more. - tgone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"In upcoming versions of Novell enterprise applications, the default desktop environment will be GNOME." ... "If the user makes no explicit choice, GNOME will be installed." More at: http://www.novell.com/prblogs/index.php?title=kde_and_gnome&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why bother? What I mean is, you can take any version of Ubuntu and turn it into the other versions (Switching between Ubuntu, Edubuntu, and Kubuntu) just by switching the three desktop metapackages. It only takes a few minutes, and it's painless if you do it after you install.
So, why not just install regular Ubuntu, and then open up a terminal and remove the default desktop metapackage, and install the new one? We're talking something like three or four commands here. - kckman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They're available simultaneously. The article was about Kubuntu though, and hence the link went there. I ordered the Ubuntu as well.
- optikburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I did that in my Ubuntu Breezy, using apt-get to install kdm.. the result is not so pretty.. but not bad either..
- Chozabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, the shipping is hundreds, even thousands of times more expensive than pressing a cd
if you order 10, and give even one to someone who would have otherwise requested it seperatly, it costs less for them
besides, if sending out free cds gets too expensive, the first thing to happen would be a "brake" on sending cds, for example a slightly larger questionare, or a token donation to skip
if that all goes to hell anyway its unlightly to do any worst than cancel the shipping of free cds, torrenting ISOs is fine for lots of people, shipit is a slightly handy service, and i expect it costs much less than most advertising campaigns! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You need to get your info correct dude.
- optikburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1KDE and GNOME is an option in SUSE.. I've just tested the final release of SUSE 10.1 and it doesn't install either of the two desktops as the default.. you have to make your own choice.. but I got this feeling while being acquainted with SUSE 10.1 that it was rushed..
- almighty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the good news I needed to hear this morning. I just ordered my Kubuntu CDs but after I did, I just thought of something. Why is Kubuntu being released before Ubuntu is? does Ubuntu have something more than what Kubuntu have?
also on a unrelated subject, anyone planning on running Compiz/XGL? - nooreazy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ORDERED 8 kubuntu CD's AND 2 64-bit CD's.NOW i just cant wait till they arive so i can begin to compare linux with windows!!!. BTW thx for the link man.you just converted 3 people to linux from windows :D(the other 2 are my freinds)
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Energeek that comment was just as ignorant as the two previous morons comments. It is people like you that are continuing stereotypes, so do us all a favor, the next time use your brain before posting stereotypical comments.
- optikburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well.. I placed my order for Ubuntu and Kubuntu.. and judging by the number of CDs that I need, I went for the last option.. but I don't need the "1" CD for Mac.. that's the reason why custom orders should be made.. because here in our country, Mac is just too expensive..
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't it stupid they don't offer me to order 1 CD for 32 bit PC and 1 CD for 64 bit PC?
If I want both of them I must order 10 CD's, or put two separate orders... Either they waste 8 CDs or they waste the cost of sending 2 packages. -
