"We built this city...."
"We built this city on Linux code" - Misos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is this South or North Korea? I am guessing South...

I'm surprised that more universities don't take advantage of Linux as well. - jibone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A windows user in this city will finally feel what linux user feel in a windows dominated enviroment :p
- FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Linux City...... Has a nice ring to it!
- fiend.lord, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Maybe Warcraft 3 will finally get a port to Linux...

LoL nice take. - sdcdiggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So is Linus like the God King of Linux City?
- CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@chicken101....Sudo apt get "all your base are belong to us"
What does this have to do with Korea? "all your base belong to us" is in reference to a Japanese Game translation.....not Korean - Kuipo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh to live in whichever city they choose... This is a very interesting idea. It seems like the same concept as when people move to a country where they barely know the language, Total Immersion. I wish I could be there for it.
Devil's Advocate Addendum: How fair is it to force people to replace their computer's "Windows program" OS with a Linux OS? - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We're off to see the wonderful wizard of Linux city: Linus
That has a nice ring to it. - danraydotorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A city that runs on Linux? They're too late: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=2&url=http%3A//www.wien.gv.at/english/edp/wienux.htm&ei=_jH1Q7a4GYv2oAKjvO0Q&sig2=2MW6LBg3a4wZbrM5xmd3Mg (Almost posted this yeseterday but it was already dugg)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the thing is, if linux is the default OS for government and schools ( that is after all what they are doing, not forcing the public) it will help the adoption of open standards and make life easier for everyone.
also, this shows great cluefulness on the part of the korean government, it means they are free to modify software to suit themselfs, and break their reliance on western based software companies.
innovation like this is what will make asia the powerhouse of the 21st century - rjg1021, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0``In order to become a genuine software powerhouse, Korea has no choice but to secure source technologies. We cannot achieve the goal under the command of dominant closed-source programs,’’ said Ko Hyun-jin, president at the state-backed agency.
What advantages does open-source provide to national security? - asaone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I remember right Balmer told Korea if they found them to be a monopoly they would pull all of Micky$oft stuff out of there and I think they found them to be a monopoly. Koreans are like everyone else and do not like to be told what to do. Too bad Uncle Sam has not caught on.
- parker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0for those wondering, this article is about south korea.
i don't know if one small university dedicated to linux will make much of a difference, but it's a start. most korean software i've run across is really bulky. i guess in a country with fast computers and really fast networking speeds, software efficiency doesn't matter very much. - h3dru5h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0go korea
- Kuipo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ sapo916
It's not good comedy however. - SIDSI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there is no such country named Korea.

Korea faces challenges buying SCO Group, Inc
US government today declined the acquisition of SCO Group, Inc by Korea; stating that SCO Unix is responsible for national defense projects. "No twit would allow another country access to the code that runs his computers." Commented a senior staffer at The Department of Homeland Security. - nabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most engineering faculties have Linux as they main stream operating system like the University of Toronto.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What advantages does open-source provide to national security?"
Because foreign nations could pay the closed source company to include a backdoor in their software that could be exploited to gather information.
If you can't see the source, anything could be in it.
I can't see what's in my hot dog (and I wouldn't eat it if I could) but there could be anything in there. - mgullit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Open source goes mainstream everywhere ! The french ministry of finance has just choose to deploy massively open source, with the biggest open source support contract ever !( http://blogs.opensource-it.com/?p=11 ) After Asia, Europe is embracing open source... I understand with Microsoft is pushing hard Vista !!

That has a nice ring to it.
In what language lol, no ring at all in my english. - jgotangco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I spoke at the Linux Desktop Conference in Seoul last year and I'm really impressed at how the Korea IT Promotion Agency (KIPA) is handling the government effort to speed up free software adoption (not just Linux mind you) in all facets of society. There are real issues and challenges that need to be resolved, like the portal companies creating too much ActiveX content and better CJK integration with upstream projects but its getting there :)
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet they didn't try the page on GNU/Linux before publishing, the font looks horribly screwed up.
- xamox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My school already runs linux on a lot of machines.
