Sure, Vista has DirectX 10, but I'm really having a difficult time justifying the price tag.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18That first image is funny, reminds me of Windows when something crashes! :(
- jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14can't wait for the next version of Beryl. I've been using nightly builds, and I've really cleaned up the user interface for Beryl Manager. Also, support for Heliodor is a big plus, too (I think that's already been in a stable release, though).
And yes, eye candy is what'll get people interested in dropping windows, just like eye candy is the only reason people want Vista. A good OS is what'll make them stay. But it takes a little eye candy to get the blinders off. - AK10, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15@geoken
You fail to realize what most people non-tech people place value on when choosing an operating system. Flashy 3D graphics impress the average Joe much more than secure networking or stability. For an example of this see Windows Vista. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12You must realize that many of the plugins for beryl/compiz are pointless. The real awesomeness of beryl is in the window manager options (press f9 for a expose like function) etc....
You can enable or disable any plugins you want, or add more if you wish. The possibilities are endless. - towca, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16"... but the buttons and most icons still look like ass? "
What the ***** are you talking about? The default look of KDE and Gnome is light-years ahead of the blue atrocity of windows xp. I must admit, I haven't seen Vista on action yet, but I doubt they can make me feel as if my linux desktop needs a new graphics designer. - KevinJim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11That is just Knoppix with Beryl ... I expected something more. But they are in the right direction.

- vagarach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Have you used Ubuntu? The latest ones make windows xp look really unprofessional. And I use xp all the time, and was quite amazed at how slick ubuntu has become over time.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Note that this doesn't come with binary drivers (nvidia's + ATI's fglrx).
- graemee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Only to have another HD crash, right.
Maybe you should get a new HD. - gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it is basically the opposite of the knoppix(.org) main page, which must have the least eyecandy of any popular distro websites.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9"You fail to realize what most people non-tech people place value on when choosing an operating system. Flashy 3D graphics impress the average Joe much more than secure networking or stability."
I agree with you. But a 6 workspace hexagon with the transparency plug in goes way past 'flashy' and is well into the realm of 'overwhelmingly confusing'. - krazykit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Rosco, Iceweasel was substituted for Firefox because the Firefox name/icon are NOT free according to Debian. Note that Knoppix is based on Debian. Also, to make it all fit on a CD, apt won't work on the LiveCD. If you do a disk-install, you can get the apt support back.
- nullity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"how do i do x?"
I think you'll find that X runs much better on linux. ( http://x.org/ ) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the new knoppix is so great with NTFS write support! it has saved me a few times already.
- lucas448, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@ Markpdotcom WTF is a laptop with 2GHZ of DDR2 RAM? you mean GB? you sir do not know computers... maybe thats your problem
as for vista being slow... its dead slow if you have any graphics card under 128-256 i have 512 and it runs five times faster than xp (on any pc). The reason is the WHOLE GUI and most everything vista does (the OS not programs) is run ONLY on your graphics card (from what i understand) - Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Well, I just downloaded, burned and tried this version out. It is the tightest version of Knoppix I have ever used. It got my screen resolution correct AND my audio actually worked right from the start. My audio has never worked properly or has not worked at all with previous versions of Knoppix. Its fast and snappy. My only disappointments is they still do not include VLC media player, and have removed Firefox for the Ice Weasel, which is just an unbranded version of Firefox. I'd like to see an Add/Remove Programs feature in it similar to Ubuntu, which to a Linux noob like me is golden.
- AK10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@geoken
Well I agree with you too! However, I see people driving around in larger, more ridiculous cars all the time. Every time I think I've seen the biggest, ugliest monstrosity of a truck or SUV ever, a new one comes along and puts the previous ones to shame. The market does not lie, there is a demand for this crap. I'm downloading it now to see how it actually works, sometimes "over the top" can be fun. Especially if its a non-committal liveCD distro. - CraigRat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You do realise that it is a trivial matter to change the appearance of the taskbar.... within 2 clicks?
- yoyar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What's wrong with "eye candy for eye candy's sake"? Eye candy doesn't have to have a point. Why should it? It's just cool to look at. If you don't like it then don't bother with it. Other people do like it because it is fun. That's reason enough.
- oobuntu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lovely KDE icons here:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=16564
no connection with the artist , just a happy user - silenceHR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I tried Beryl with Knoppix LiveDVD and now i have dual boot with Ubunutu (i tried openSuSe 10.2, but i couldn't get it to run XGL).
Anyway, i have had Knoppix Live CD/DVD for long (since 3.8) in case any win machine goes crazy and i need to access files or something. Linux Live CD/DVD is great tool (no matter of eye-candy). - Waterrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 I really like the burning window...Very cool.
- EnderTheThird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2HOWTO: Get Diggs on Your Comment:
Just say "Digg me down for this if you want..." or "I know I'm going to get dugg down for this". It's like people will digg their stupid comment up just so the ass clown isn't right. I'd much rather him foretell the future and have his stupid, ignorant comment buried though. - SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Very cool. My favorite distro live or not. I use knoppix to rescue my windows install on a regular basis. Forget to backup and have a hard drive crash? In goes knoppix. Back up my data and back onto the drive goes windows. :D
- CompUSAEmployee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am currently running Sabayon on an Acer Celeron laptop with Intel graphics,. With Beryl running it is alot faster than Vista RC1 was on it. Best distro I've tried yet!
- Markpdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4As great as Linux is, I'm unaware of it stopping hard drive failures :)
- ApeInago, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2are there many restrictons on it?
- Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@masgrada
Because Vista is slower than crap.
I'd like to see vista run on my spare pentium mmx laptop with 96 megs of ram, linux pulls it off easy.
On another note, beryl is an option, not part of a default installation with most distros.
An example of a distro that pulls of Beryl extremely well is Sabayon Linux.
http://www.sabayonlinux.org/
I would say that sabayon easily looks better than vista, and runs faster. - fani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Love knoppix. This is a cool addition for people like me who're on the move and this live cd helps. Not for the eye candy beryl stuff but for the usefulness of live cd.
Also, for just goofing around, beryl is great. Another great distro for beryl is sabayon Linux. its super too - miker71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did knoppix just jump the shark?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any GE:S?
- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My main problem with the interface is the KDE standard grey taskbar/dock. For me the grey tones are what make this interface stand out as a weakling against the mac interface. The finesse that osx manages is akin to the apple product design vs a beige box.
Increasingly there is less and less you NEED windows for, which you can't find in an open source project on linux and the mac, but user interfaces count, and I am enjoying seeing these developments! - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1v5.1.1 changelog: http://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/KNOPPIX-CHANGELOG.txt
- netferret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@masgrada
vista isnt actually that slow, is more about the software compatability and the drivers that are the issue. - frouse, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9or stop using Windows.. ;)
- firstc624, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a question though. Now i use linux, i have a ubuntu box setup on 2 laptops and one desktop. I never really felt to compelled to get beryl or xgl setup on them.
Now my question is What is the point of Beryl? Why use something for just eye candy? I have beryl on the laptop i am using now, w/ the 3d accel working, but when i was looking at i couldn't find to much usability for it. :-(
THanks for your coments - gridbread, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome, yet another easy way to demonstrate the wonderful eyecandy available.
I've easily adopted MANY friends to be full linux users once they've seen Beryl+Aiglx, on my setup. - naasekke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm an Ubuntu + Beryl user myself but personally I would say that if you want to see a VERY polished and professional distro out of the box then look at openSUSE 10.2.
Vista looks a lot better than XP but that's where it ends. The thing with Linux is how customisable it is, it's very easy to make a stunning looking environment. I would agree that the standard setup of some distros leaves something to be desired but it's not hard to change at all.
I think it's great how more and more distros are using Beryl, when Windows users are gloating over their Aero interface thinking they have it all they can then see Beryl in action and wonder what MS spent the past few years actually doing! - hcteks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I could never get beryl to work on my laptop with an nvidia geforce go 6150, makes me angry.
- jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for what purpose do you need Vista that XP is not serving?
s/I've/they've
said that wrong... I *wish* I was a programmer for stuff like that ... =) - simpleprimate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds cool can't wait to give it a try.
- haooken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I, for some reason, can't see my mouse cursor. Any one else have this problem? If so/not, can you still offer some advice as to how to fix it?
- dulles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is the by far the guady Knoppix desktop I have ever seen. Kudos to those responsible! You, dear reader, may not like it, but compare it to previous releases!
- Onetrack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Nah..
its OK..
Vista is slow as balls..
Install Sabayon 3.26, really nice live dvd - UxPx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Theres a difference between Rescue and Prevention.
/me now knows why he stays away from Windows users. - Malizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems like everybody is getting caught up in whether XP or Linux is prettier. For me, I've finally just reached my breaking point on having DRM shoved down my throat. I'm fed up with slowly giving away more and more of my computer freedoms so M$ can play parent or big brother to me and, at the expense of my own resources, only allow me to do what they deem acceptable. I'm thrilled to find that Linux desktops are actually a viable alternative these days. Sure, there's challenges here and there, but I've yet to run into anything a SIMPLE google search doesn't immediately have the solution for. And that's not even to mention the freedom from not having to pay inflated prices for shoddy software. The sad state of affairs is that M$ is a company with very little competition, and all companies are driven by profit (not saying that's bad). However, that leads to deadlines that cause rushed software to be pushed out before it's finished, disgruntled workers and bad bosses making bad decisions, as well as all the other downsides of corporate life. Linux is developed by choice by people that have a passion for what they do, and I think that alone, will cause them to prevail in the end.
In the meantime, Vista for me? No thanks. It's been a fun ride but it's finally time for a change. - ApeInago, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1first thing i do, if i ever get a mac, is make the corners square, and grey everything out.
