- abbathdoom, on 10/07/2009, -7/+187"This may be the best version of Ubuntu to date."
Urm? Isn't that kind of a given? I know some Ubuntu releases have had hardware problems (eg. intel graphics) but aside from that I don't see how any release can fail in being the best one to date. - the7thmagus, on 10/07/2009, -11/+136Hey [Fedora/SuSE/Arch], I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish but Ubuntu Karmic Koala is one of the BEST LINUXES OF ALL TIME
- dougbarrett, on 10/07/2009, -4/+93I think 10.4 might be the best one...or wait I take that back, 10.10 will be. No wait! 11.4....
- eh123, on 10/07/2009, -4/+80Could this be the year of Linux on the desktop?
- Gndoab, on 10/07/2009, -1/+73May I direct your attention to Windows ME.
- AndrewMoyer, on 10/07/2009, -0/+61"So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life."
- acknotSW, on 10/07/2009, -0/+52A friend of mine who worked for microsoft at the time gave me a free copy of ME, I never forgave him for that.
- ianmacfarlane, on 10/07/2009, -24/+70Just because a new version of an OS is newer doesn't mean it's guaranteed to be better - Vista anyone?
- Lleu, on 10/07/2009, -8/+52Windows ME would have been a better comparison but I understand what you're saying.
- gizram84, on 10/07/2009, -2/+43i hope they change the theme too. The 4 mouse clicks it takes to change it is painstakingly hard. My wrist usually hurts by the second or third click. I can never actually make it to 4. Please Ubuntu, don't make it brown, FOR THE SAKE OF MY WRIST!!!
- perfunction, on 10/07/2009, -3/+41I'm holding out for Paraplegic Panda.
- ThantiK, on 10/07/2009, -2/+38Because Ubuntu is pushing a lot of Desktop linux forward in a new and exciting way (not new really for all of the computer-related field, but it's new to the linux side of things)
They're making things "Just work" - far better than people have been able to do before, and they are doing a good job at it. When grandma or grandpa wants to try linux...do you suggest slackware? - ***** no. - freeridstylee, on 10/07/2009, -11/+37Is it brown?
- cwcentral, on 10/07/2009, -1/+24linux releases are about features, not about making money.
So the OP is correct. Duh. - livejamie, on 10/07/2009, -2/+23binky79, is that you?
- rolls20s, on 10/07/2009, -2/+22Your point is valid, but I think he's more referring to how Ubuntu has been getting consistently better at each release, not OS's in general.
- specialK16, on 10/07/2009, -0/+19<3 apt
- ThantiK, on 10/07/2009, -5/+23Go load up windows 7 and then come back and tell me you don't have any problems with sound blaster EAX.
Fact is: Hardware companies support whatever the hell they want to support. And sound blaster has been caught releasing exactly the same hardware, then charging more for the people who want premium, and just enabling certain things in drivers...the idiot tax. Your more than welcome to keep paying it and supporting companies like this but some of us don't like paying the idiot tax. - waspbr, on 10/07/2009, -3/+19it can be
- Gndoab, on 10/07/2009, -1/+16dont tell me what to do!
- Gndoab, on 10/07/2009, -22/+37I actually did like Vista more than XP.
- tacojohn48, on 10/07/2009, -3/+17Right because what we all really want with a new OS is a new wallpaper.
- sonicjosh, on 10/07/2009, -2/+14Ubuntu has a 6 month release cycle, it keeps them working. They wanted to avoid the problem that Debian had, which was development stalling.
- JQP123, on 10/07/2009, -27/+39The opportunity for a "year of Linux on the desktop" has come and gone. Unfortunately, Linux wasn't ready at the time and missed it. At this point, I doubt you could get Linux on a majority of desktops even if you paid people to try it.
Yes, I know, the truth hurts. So go ahead, digg me down. You may fell better but the truth won't change. - mrfunktastic, on 10/07/2009, -1/+13And check this out... each new computer I buy? Fastest computer I ever bought.
- costumemaker, on 10/07/2009, -0/+12You would if it ran embedded linux
- Nitrodist88, on 10/07/2009, -0/+12Yeah, JQP123, popular operating systems never change. I'm STILL using my AmigaOS!
- Swivelstick, on 10/07/2009, -0/+11It is changing, just slowly I've put Ubuntu on a couple of peoples computers lately and I've had no complaints whereas when I've done that in the past they'd whinge and it would be back to Windows. But the biggest issue is government implementation of software and how that's basically a monopoly which isn't healthy.
- zip000, on 10/07/2009, -1/+12There is a regular release cycle - every 6 months a new version comes out, and every 18 months (I think) a new long term support version comes out.
Is it necessary to update so frequently? Probably not - Debian doesn't update versions very quickly at all and gets by fine. It's just a different way of doing things.
If you don't want to update, don't update. Though I would suggest using one of the long term support options if you don't want to update frequently. That way you'll have security and stability updates for a longer period of time. - MeltingIce, on 10/07/2009, -0/+10They made massive improvements to PulseAudio support so my Creative X-Fi Titanium card actually works pretty well under Ubuntu 9.10. The sound quality isn't perfect but its pretty damn close to what I hear in Windows 7.
- skubiszm, on 10/07/2009, -1/+11I will believe it if blinky79 tells me its the best Ubuntu ever.
- rolls20s, on 10/07/2009, -5/+15I do fell better.
- Greyh0und, on 10/07/2009, -1/+10Buried for telling me what to do!
- knobbysideup, on 10/07/2009, -0/+9who reboots laptops? I always hibernate or suspend mine. Unlike windoze, linux actually gets more responsive the longer it's up since it knows how to properly use memory.
- boogerthecat, on 10/07/2009, -0/+9Maybe its time to give it a try.
- Powerfan5000, on 10/07/2009, -0/+9If Linux gains popularity, then Apple and Microsoft will be forced to improve their products to stay relevant. Remember IE6. It sucked because MS didn't have to compete with any other browsers. Competition from Firefox and Safari forced Microsoft to improve the quality of IE. It still has a long way to go, but we as consumers benefited.
- JeSTeRSeVeN, on 10/07/2009, -0/+9If only there were some way for me to make Ubuntu another color.
- Senturion, on 10/07/2009, -0/+9Isn't it the entire point of software revisions to make the next one better than the last?
So by definition each new revision should be the best ever. - rkenned, on 10/07/2009, -1/+9as cliche as this phrase is...I really don't understand it. Linux is about having a choice in which Operating System you use...not about popularity. Its fine that Linux maintains a < 2% market share as long as users have an option of being in that minority.
- daviddiaz, on 10/07/2009, -0/+8Unless you buy a netbook to supplement your current desktop...
- specialK16, on 10/07/2009, -2/+10IRONY: THIS POST HAS IT.
- tacojohn48, on 10/07/2009, -0/+8I put Ubuntu on my grandmothers computer. Within a few minutes she knew how to do everything in Linux that she did in Windows. Also she hasn't managed to break anything in Ubuntu. My only problem has been when one of her great-grandkids moved the menu and she couldn't move it back.
- peaceninja, on 10/07/2009, -0/+8What can brown do for you?
- iskin, on 10/07/2009, -1/+9Vista was better after SP1 as long as your computer is able to run it. Everyone talks about how nice Windows 7 when it is pretty much the same thing as Vista.
- rcarroll215, on 10/07/2009, -0/+8Ubuntu follows Gnome's 6 month release cycle. Debian puts out releases every few years because they are all about stability. Ubuntu is more about the latest and greatest, in order to attract desktop users.
- DiggMikeS, on 10/07/2009, -2/+9The one where I give my grandma a usb flash drive and say "here, just run this instead" so she stops calling me for windows support/repair/ecovery will be the best one.
- Phate8263, on 10/07/2009, -1/+8Not until OEMs actually install a decent Linux on their linux computer offerings.
I blame the relative failure of the linux netbook on the ***** linux versions the OEMs installed. - MrChunks, on 10/07/2009, -1/+8I heard it's to be called Paedophilic Porcupine.
- nextekcarl, on 10/07/2009, -0/+7I worked as a subcontractor replacing hardware under warranty right around the time of Windows ME and the start of XP. I'd guess that more than 30% of the calls I went out on where due to Windows ME and not any actual hardware. It was like Windows 3.0 all over again.
- archiesteel, on 10/07/2009, -0/+7Dell installs a decent Ubuntu on their PCs.
Also, why do you speak of the "relative failure" of the Linux netbooks? Are you referring to that debunked story about Linux having a much higher return rate than Windows on netbooks?
A third of netbooks sold by Dell run Ubuntu - and those machines runs 9.10 perfectly, BTW. People see my fully-functioning Karmic Koala Mini 10v and drool with envy. -
