http://www.linux.com/feature/114560 - hungryduck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+53This website certainly isn't pretty.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+36KDE4 is becoming too irresistible to wait for.
- mournsanity, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I don't even know if that mess qualifies as a blog.
- parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -15/+29I really hope KDE bekomes more sophistikated as it matures. I don't really like it in it's kurrent stage (kde3). Gnome is way simpler.
- smurf22, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14This is awesome, looks better, less resources, this is getting good. I might drop gnome for this.
- Soapdish, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I've always prefered KDE, and KDE4 keeps looking better and better. When I first read about plasma I wasn't interested, but now it keeps getting better and better.
Now I just need to learn to program so I can contribute to the programs I use. - thelastknowngod, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8yeah especially the fact that it is getting lighter... that was always my biggest complaint with kde, it is so heavy.
- jackyyll, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yeah that 'website' is just terrible. It's looks like it was made in MS Word....
- ActiveMatx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I like both. Gnome and KDE, I always go back and forth. This looks like a good reason to go back to KDE for me.
- johlin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7It seems the webserver is getting *****...*****.
- daviddiaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I think that this reworking of KDE might make me switch from gnome. I tried KDE recently (Kubuntu 6.10) and it failed to impress me. However, KDE4 might just change my mind
- xv1ncentx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I like evolution, but what do i like more?
Sane competition.
It's all about that (for me, at least).
I would like to see a good and interesting competition between KDE, Gnome or any DE in the GNU/Linux world.
That's what i want, because i don't like to see the hole community fighting like kids and saying "this is better and bla bla bla". - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+5On the bright side, with more use the stronger you get.
- daviddiaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I always figured that the reason why fair skin is more favorable was simply because of European dominance of the world. idk, i always imagined that tribal people in africa might think the opposite and prefer darker skin or w/e simply because it dominates there
- rediculous, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Why is it that every time I click on a link involving Linux I immediately look for the "screenshot" gallery?
- clos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3http://www.linux.com/feature/114560
- sinfree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I can't help but agree with you. This new comment format really clutters up the comment section big time and makes it hard for me to scan through them and find the interesting ones. The bigger digg gets the more I miss digg from a year or two ago.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I can't provide a cite, but it has been demonstrated that humans find dark text on light backgrounds significantly more legible than the inverse. Maddox's venting does not constitute conclusive proof otherwise. I'd guess the human preference for predominantly light colors stems from evolutionary eyesight development as daylight creatures (why fair skin is generally viewed favorably, black is for funerals etc.).
- Adross, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4A black background with white text is supposedly easier on the eyes. As Maddox himself says "I've chosen a black background for most of my text because it's easier on the eyes than staring at a white screen. Think about it: your monitor is not a piece of paper, no matter how hard you try to make it one. Staring at a white background while you read is like staring at a light bulb (don't believe me? Try turning off the lights next time you use a word processor). Would you stare at a light bulb for hours at a time? Not if you want to keep your vision."
- Revolt25, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i completely agree
- dsn0wman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It really hurts my eyes! Seriously, its a one paragraph post and I feel dizzy now.
- binarysemaphore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Awesome..lighter & faster kde !!.. can't wait for 4.0 ...KDE FTW..
- b3mus3d, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2reading worthless comments is all the more painful when you have to click and wait an excruciating moment for it to load :(
- regeya, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3KDE devs have been getting better about not using K in everything. Hell, at one stage gust gabout ghevery gnome gnapp ghad ghto ghave gha greminder tghat gnome gwas gendorsed gby gnu.
It still annoys me that mere days after the GNOME project ditched their old philosophy, the GNOME fanboys not only hailed Ximian for their wise leadership, they derided KDE developers for throwing in things that were, in all fairness, attempts at keeping up with and surpassing the GNOME desktop.
I for one am delighted that the KDE devs have taken their time to change things for the better, and take their time to do things right. As, um, predictable as the GNOME release cycle is, it's hard to get excited about it. And the things that one CAN get excited about are probably patent-encumbered due to their dependence on Mono. Gone are the days when GNOME could be relied upon to be the clearly-licensed desktop, though I'm glad the KDE devs haven't stooped to the old GNU tactics of denouncing apps li 'illegal'; can you imagine if KDE devs started announcing that Beagle, Tomboy, etc. were all ILLEGAL? Can you imagine the firestorm? Lord knows I wouldn't blame 'em for trying it, though. The GNOME fanboys deserve every bit of hell they get. Keep taking the high road, though, guys, it makes us all look better. :-D
And finally, I've been using the last KDE 3.x-compatible Dolphin release for a while now, and even the early version is fantastic. The whole 'the filemanger is the browser' concept was cool when Microsoft was pretending that Explorer and Internet Explorer were one and the same, and it was amusing to load the MS 'site in kfm hyping that new feature back before '98 was released, but let's let a bad idea rest finally. The Nautilus guys could gut their bloated hog; while Konqueror wasn't a hog, it's a good idea that was never fully realized and implemented in a way that could be called 'easy' or 'convenient.' Dolphin, on the other hand, allows for ioslaves, bookmarks, split windows, etc. in a way that seems intuitive and encourages one-window use and organization, and is nearly as attractive as Thunar. How cool is that? - nayr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2hell, even Apple, with its 'i' craze, only puts it on some of their apps (iLife plus isync, ichat, idvd, and itunes, I think... idvd might be part of ilife.)
- Jo9100, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3gnome is okay
- Ademan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If i remember right, the last time i saw any comparisons between GNOME and KDE, KDE wasn't SIGNIFICANTLY lighter than GNOME, so choosing one over the other based on how light they are would be rediculous. If you're looking for light weight, as I'm sure many before me have said, go use Xfce or even just a window manager like fluxbox, blackbox, ratpoison (haha), or iceWM, all of which (and more) are significantly lighter weight than both GNOME and KDE.
To me it's just preference, I prefer GNOME because it looks nicer to me (as do GTK+ apps) than KDE and Qt apps, and I dislike the cluttered KDE apps interfaces. Of course, I use all three of the "major" desktop environments at home, one on each computer according to usage (KDE on my parents computer where i felt it would be less "culture shock", xfce on my low-end computer, and GNOME here on the one I use the most)
And like other people have said before, competition is good, and plasma sounds very intriguing. - vh1`, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1sure it's not super+n?
cause ctrl+n would cause a lot of conflicts - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Personally I prefer black on black.
- aten, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I hopes it comes out to be better than the website...
- stiankarlsen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Same thought just crossed my mind, this is looking very nice.
- Ramble, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1True, but maddox uses grey text. It doesn't really matter what the colour is too much, it's the contrast that makes the difference.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yeah, I hate the Ks too. Gnome is more mature in the naming of its apps, they don't put a 'G' in the name of every app.
- Theli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Does anyone have a mirror for this page? It's quite unreachable.
- mishaco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1" prettier ! faster ! "
whole lotta text and not one screen shot . how is anyone to tell how pretty it is ? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1iDVD is part of iLife, as is iTunes (although it's also a free download, its still bundled with iLife). GarageBand is the one app in the iLife suite who's name doesn't start with 'i', As for non-iLife iApps, there's also iCal.
- gavintlgold, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I used the Compcomm negative plugin in order to read it correctly :D .... thank goodness for compcomm. .. Also, if you read this corevette, thanks for posting my video... (the compcomm demo) That was nice of you.
- Ademan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Like the clouds of justice!
- opencoder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah, hopefully in the next alpha, they get the panels drawn by plasma instead of kicker. I like all the usability stuff they are doing. And it is really nice that they are enabling compositing and stuff. I like that they are starting to enable allot of effects like Compiz/Beryl/Fusion.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5Wait, are you talking about digg or sh5.net?
- phjr, on 10/11/2007, -7/+7That's very nice!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2i might have to undigg this since the host cannot handle the inbound DNS queries
- LocDawg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Very Nice!
- DocHoliday22, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0For those of us with Compiz Fusion, it's Ctrl + N.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1what the heck is CTRL ALT COMMAND, are you using a mac or something?
personally i prefer white on black, i dont know if it's just me, but i really hate xterms that are white with black text. - masnevets, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3This is true, but Maddox is an idiot.
- kewlrichie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Prettier and Lighter...thats how i like my women
- aussiedood, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Not so fast...
"As for color, as long as there is sufficient contrast between the text and the background, many color combinations are possible. However, most studies have shown that dark characters on a light background are superior to light characters on a dark background (when the refresh rate is fairly high). For example, Bauer and Cavonius (1980) found that participants were 26% more accurate in reading text when they read it with dark characters on a light background. Moreover, a survey by Scharff, et al. (1996) revealed that the color combination perceived as being most readable is the traditional black text on white background. However, it is common for websites (such as this one) to have an off-white background in order to reduce the flicker and glare associated with white backgrounds. " - http://psychology.wichita.edu/optimalweb/text.htm - bradpurchase, on 06/12/2008, -2/+1To be honest, I'm sick of everyone _having_ to agree with Maddox all the time. I'm used to white on black, so meh.

What is Digg?
