- whataboutdave, on 12/11/2007, -9/+78Listen closely. That's the sound a million Linux users fapping away.
- DevilsLeftHand, on 12/11/2007, -2/+58I think that we have to stop and appreciate good software design. I think it's always commendable when people can make advances in their software while simultaneously creating a smaller memory footprint. I don't care if you're a linux or microsoft fanboy. Smart development is just that.
- Cipher054, on 12/11/2007, -5/+53if this is real, good bye gnome ;)
- HerbertScrunge, on 12/11/2007, -4/+42Konqueror is a comparatively tiny app (30k loc) that only ever loads the KParts it needs. The fact that the default file manager is Dolphin, not Konqueror would not make a difference of this magnitude. So there :p
Anyway, these particular results are near-useless as, based on the figures they list, they are using an approach to measurement that is naive to the point of uselessness (they appear to be summing the contents of the "RES" column in top, which completely ignores the beneficial effects of sharing code) and don't include Xorg measurements which are likely to be higher for KDE4 since Qt4 currently double-buffers every widget by default. Also, an empty KDE3 desktop uses a fraction of the purported 348MB listed here. Bille's other blog is slightly better - we have multiple apps open, and the usage is definitely under 256MB as we are not touching swap:

Hopefully, Lubos will do a repeat of his very thorough earlier analysis, this time comparing KDE3 and KDE4:

- ShogunWarPig, on 12/11/2007, -5/+35Fap fap fap fap fap....
- darkNiGHTS, on 12/11/2007, -9/+31Now that's impressive. Microsoft are you listeni.... nevermind.
- pvliii, on 12/11/2007, -1/+22What about iThis and iThat?
- mank, on 12/11/2007, -0/+20Care to back that statement?
- sirhomer, on 12/11/2007, -2/+22Well yes, they were using tons of redundant data structures, but still..
KDE3 consumes much less memory then Vista, so Microsoft must be doing something really, really wrong. - inactive, on 12/11/2007, -0/+18Ignore the ignorant idiot blackstrain. KDE is Free Free
- tehmoth, on 12/11/2007, -4/+20GThis and GThat are much better.
- CondoleezzaRice, on 12/11/2007, -5/+21GNOME takes more memory and does less, the only reason it became popular was because of FUD about the dual licensing issues with Qt like the comment above.
- playerx, on 12/11/2007, -0/+15Says who? What components?
Yoda once said: Informed you must be, or ***** you will say. - inactive, on 12/11/2007, -1/+15This proves nothing if it isn't compared to the compeitors...
- zotar, on 12/11/2007, -8/+21I will sit and ponder this for many hours on the toliet tonight.
- inactive, on 12/11/2007, -1/+14For me, Dolphin is ugly - it embodies everything I didnt want in my file manager. Konqueror baby yeeeerr !
- cynicist, on 12/11/2007, -0/+13It would be 155MB of memory, not 200MB.
- clickwir, on 12/11/2007, -0/+13You don't have to sacrifice as much memory now to get even more features. XFCE and Fluxbox are nice for really low memory/cpu setups. But if you have a decent machine from 4 years ago, there's no reason to forgo the features of Gnome or KDE.
- inactive, on 12/11/2007, -2/+14obviously you are not a developer.
you don't have to use kde4 for at least two months - funklor, on 12/11/2007, -7/+19Seems like a pretty stupid reason not to use it.
- gahal, on 12/11/2007, -3/+15Sounds no different than any other day.... hmmm.
- NeighborX, on 12/11/2007, -2/+13Great math, buddy.
- Serifos, on 12/11/2007, -0/+11Anytime I see "Digg me down if you agree," it's immediately translated as: "Hey everyone, look! I'm being a stupid douche! Look at me, I'm a douche! Douche douche douche!" even if I agree with the comment (and, surprise, I never do). Douche.
- fantasticFlan, on 12/11/2007, -0/+11Ok, then what about KDE isn't free?
- CptnObvious, on 12/11/2007, -0/+11The KDE 3.5.x line was maintained for a large time and is at a very stable state. However sometimes it makes sense to make large architectural changes, in which case it takes a long time but the benefits are numerous especially after some time to stabilize it and take advantage of the new architecture. KDE 3.5.x didn't get much in terms of more features because it didn't make sense to spend time and effort on that when you could use the new architecture and build from that. It is for this reason why it is good that the KDE developers are doing this tremendous overhaul, KDE4.
- SUPERcrazy, on 12/11/2007, -10/+20Maybe I'm just cynical but to reduce RAM usage by 39% they must have been doing something wrong before.
- Phocion55, on 12/11/2007, -2/+12That wouldn't make sense since it would void the "Vista just takes more resources to run because it's progress" argument
- fantasticFlan, on 12/11/2007, -0/+10Are you saying the GPL isn't free as in freedom?
- sark666, on 12/11/2007, -0/+10What I don't get is I feel from personal usage that kde 3 and gnome are about the same, or if anything kde feels like it uses less resources, but yet the live cd of kubuntu says it need 384 megs for live cd whereas ubuntu states 256. Why the disparity?
- Protoss, on 12/11/2007, -2/+11Any project builds up old code over time, either workarounds or nasty hacks, its not a sign that the project is flawed, just happens when developing something. Even Windows codebase is like this, which is part of the reason its so 'broken'.
- MWeather, on 12/11/2007, -0/+9It's not free if you want to make it not free.
- Irco, on 12/11/2007, -1/+10your statement doesn't only show ignorance when it comes to software maintenance, but it seems you have some kind of grudge against OSS which makes me wonder if it's worth to respond. Nobody ever asked you to use it or try it. If you hated it so much when you tried it just forget about it and don't ever look back, if you think is so crappy that you can do a better job, by all means....take the code and show us how is suppose to be done.
And if you think you sound smart by saying such a performance improvement only shows how crappy it was, you should have at least RTFA the memory measurements were not exactly correct, the second comment in the blog points a few things out! maybe next time you should think before making yourself look so stupid - ptFoe, on 12/11/2007, -16/+25That is because Konqueror is not trying to everything.
Dolphin FTW - bruenig, on 12/11/2007, -2/+11What in the hell are you talking about? Nothing running for it yet? You mean except all of the same applications that run on kde 3 right now?
- inactive, on 12/11/2007, -1/+10feel free to back up your mindless drivel
- gavintlgold, on 12/11/2007, -2/+11They'll catch up in 10 years maybe... their development is slooooooooooow.
- clos, on 12/11/2007, -6/+14kde4 hasn't been released yet, its not trying trying to impress you, shut up
- fiftycents, on 12/11/2007, -8/+16As Microsoft makes their ***** OS's more and more resource consuming, KDE is becoming smaller and more efficiant.
Thank you linux! - playerx, on 12/11/2007, -0/+8Thing is QT isn't a kde component.
KDE is free software as in freedom, as such it uses QT's license which is also free as in freedom for kde.
Now if you want to talk about QT licensing that's an entire different matter.
Please don't make people confused - clickwir, on 12/11/2007, -3/+11Above 2 posts are right. Kthis and Kthat is just as bad as Gthis and Gthat in Gnome. Is that really what's keeping you? It's a pretty shallow reason that you don't escape by using Gnome. Lame reason.
- GMorgan, on 12/11/2007, -0/+8Yes but KDE today is entirely free software and has been for long enough for you to work out how the various licenses work.
- demizer, on 12/11/2007, -0/+7Salute the President for me why don't ya.
- tehmoth, on 12/11/2007, -1/+898 -> 2000 is not a valid comparison is isn't the same code base, where are the figures for windows nt 3.1, 3.5, 3.51 and nt 4.0?
- Disfnord, on 12/11/2007, -0/+7What an odd thing to say.
- andycr512, on 12/11/2007, -1/+8As opposed to nice, clean, lean proprietary operating systems such as Vista?
- Protoss, on 12/11/2007, -1/+8Well I think they finally abandoned the code base and started most of it over, which always helps, ask any developer.
- BlueSkyfish, on 12/11/2007, -3/+9What is the resource difference compared to Gnome? I was considering KDE, but I really didn't see a difference between the two.
- GMorgan, on 12/11/2007, -0/+6Just because it's dual licensed does not make it non free. Yes proprietary software can link against Qt. There is no proprietary software in KDE though.
Remember that GTK+ is LGPL and can also link against proprietary software.
Also the QPL is a free software license, it just isn't GPL compatible and the argument was back when people still tried the 'There is only one license' *****.
There is a third license that is proprietary. -
