- trylleklovn, on 11/22/2007, -0/+31404 on all fullscreen shots. What a great way to prevent getting *****. :)
- dualscreenman, on 11/22/2007, -0/+26The compositing effects here are produced by KDE's window manager, Kwin 4. This window manager has nothing to do with and shares no code with Compiz Fusion, although some of the effects are similar.
- dualscreenman, on 11/22/2007, -2/+19Nice to see they replaced that god-awful purple-to-black gradiented Kicker with something more sexy.
- keyo, on 11/22/2007, -0/+15Pussy as hosting + digg? Easy, just delete all the content the people want to see (enlarged screenshots). The thumbnails look ok, but it's the fine detail that defines the quality of it all. So I hold off judgements 'til I see proper screenshots.
- quamsta, on 11/22/2007, -0/+12Snapshot Screenshots? My head exploded.
- dualscreenman, on 11/22/2007, -1/+13Something about suing major KDE developers over their wallpaper taste strikes me as somewhat.... stupid, at the least.
So I don't know whether to digg you up or down, since I also agree that the Compiz-esque effects are a nice touch. I guess I just won't. - jshabad00, on 11/22/2007, -2/+12Wow. I suppose you vote the candidate that has the best sounding name too? Drive the car that sounds the coolest? WTF.
- crazybrit, on 11/22/2007, -0/+9anyone have a mirror for the images?
- stalefries, on 11/22/2007, -0/+9I think that was actually being discussed as a rule for KDE4. I'm not sure what came of it (I haven't followed this in months), but there's hope yet. Note that the new filemanager is "Dolphin". No K's in sight!
- amfantasy, on 11/22/2007, -1/+9is this what the Novell build service version looks like
- se1zure, on 11/22/2007, -0/+8Your also averaging 1500 digg downs a comment.
- Kratos76, on 11/22/2007, -0/+8And I promise that's not as fun as it sounds.
- pinetree, on 11/22/2007, -4/+11I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Not Enough Contrast!
Look at the "About Me" icon here:
http://vizzzion.org/images/kde-4.0-post-rc1/ksysgu ...
or the "Columns" or "View Modes" icons here:
http://vizzzion.org/images/kde-4.0-post-rc1/dolphi ...
You really have to strain to see them. - Kratos76, on 11/22/2007, -0/+7The requested URL was not found on this server.
- Dementual, on 01/27/2008, -2/+8I understand why JustAboutReal was getting Dugg down, but I don't know why you are. Your point is very valid, KDE 3.5 does feel somewhat like an attempt to put makeup on a plastic doll. The thing is, that's what they're attempting to solve in KDE4; make it pretty, make it easy, make it friendly. And by the looks of the above screenshots, they're doing very well towards this goal.
- InuX, on 11/22/2007, -1/+7Only one more month before this badboy is unleashed on my desktop.
- DeviateSeptum, on 11/22/2007, -1/+6Um, would you prefer random names? And if you haven't noticed gnome uses "g" a lot.
- eean, on 11/22/2007, -0/+5He is on the KDE eV board, so he would be suing himself. :)
- djmdave, on 11/22/2007, -0/+5openSUSE build service still has RC1 packages so you will either have to wait up to 1 week for the next batch of packages or build from source (which isn't hard if you follow the guide)
Build service workspace (plasma) package still at RC1: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE ...
Build KDE4 from source (work up to the kdebase package for plasma, as anything else is optional extras): http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started/Build/KDE4 - inactive, on 11/22/2007, -4/+8I know nothing about Linux world but my young brother managing linux servers once told me he prefers KDE over Gnome so Go KDE!
oops, i realize my comment is pointless.. bah... submit - jjmckay, on 11/22/2007, -2/+6Want to use KDE4 very much but buried for 404 error messages.
- regeya, on 11/22/2007, -0/+4Indeed. Looking at my XFCE menu, the thing I notice is that the difference between GNOME and KDE apps is that the nonsensical names don't have a 'k' in them if they're GNOME apps. I mean, really, Evince? Evolution? Nautilus? Eye of GNOME? gThumb? Tomboy? I guess one could argue that a couple of those aren't actual GNOME apps, and that the "proper" GNOME menu HIDES THE NAMES OF THE APPS, but that's just gloss.
Anyway, this rant was in support of KDE apps continuing to have the 'k' naming convention, but only when it makes sense. ;-) - eean, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3The SVG theme (so the border stuff) used for the bottom taskbar is just being borrowed from the desktop plasmoids. So don't worry about it looking a bit fugly, they will get a better one for it. :)
- keyo, on 11/22/2007, -1/+4The new appliKations don't use the same naming skheme. Whenever I search for the application to open....now I want that one called K-something, ah *****! They're all K-something.
- longcatacgnol, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2From what I've seen, the Oxygen theme config dialog has a slider to adjust its contrast manually. Someone posted a few screenshots on the Planet a while ago, where he experimented with different settings, and Oxygen looked a whole lot better with slightly increased contrast. Colors are also fully configurable, one of the screenshots even showed Oxygen with black windows and green highlights.
- inactive, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2I like the look of KDE 4, but, what the fu** is that kicker? I want a beautiful kicker! :(
- dubkat, on 11/22/2007, -2/+4Very sexy, I can't wait till KDE 4 is stable :)
- jjmckay, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2You have to have KDE4 to do that. Sorry. ;)
- lonewolfbr, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2how the hell I can go into fullscreen pictures?
- Dylson, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2Thats not good.
- Tempest261, on 11/22/2007, -16/+17This is going to sound extremely anal, but I'll start using KDE when they choose a new naming scheme for native applications (in other words, I'm over everything starting with the letter "K", especially words that should start with "C"). The current standard is too damn annoying.
- MrTea, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1I came.
- Tempest261, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1My argument against the endless stream of "k's" is primarily because it makes certain things hard to find, even if you know the exact name that you're looking for. Even if GNOME has odd names, they are at least somewhat different. That, and my pet peeve of replacing a C with a K .. ie "Konqueror".
- Geaugan, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1Why do people hate the color brown so much?
- nousplacidus, on 11/22/2007, -1/+2pics gone as I'm sure people have noted.
- morphie, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1Well, you should, because it won't be stable untill KDE 4.1. As said by the KDE developer themselves.
- keyo, on 11/22/2007, -1/+2Hopefully with the power of open source, somebody who actually GETS this point will make a decent widget theme. The oxygen guys don't understand this point, they like their fluffy subtle little gradients which look great on their monitors I'm sure.. Some lcds have very poor viewing angles so contrast is very important. I like the oxygen icons and plasma style but the widgets are ugly, the close/minimise buttons look like warts.
- andycr512, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1They killed kicker off now. I forgot the name of what they replaced it with.
- morphie, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1No, I'm sorry, that is the final one.
- digmc, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1I'm not a KDE guy and I'll admit that the links to the larger pictures seem to be broken so I can't see details but it looks a whole lot like the old KDE to me.
- lump1, on 11/22/2007, -0/+0I couldn't disagree more! KDE's problem has always been the same for me: A vomitpool of crass primary colors with far too much contrast. I want the WORK I do on the computer to be drawing my attention, not the widgets of the OS/window manager. For the first time, KDE took a step away from this traditional tackiness and garishness, and now you complain about a lack of contrast? AAAaaaaa! That's the only word that comes to mind!
- cynicist, on 11/22/2007, -4/+4I dugg him down for saying the default Ubuntu theme is ugly.
- MrTea, on 11/22/2007, -1/+1like Gwenview, right?
- adredz, on 12/03/2007, -0/+0i don't like the way the apps icons are placed in the panel in KDE 4. i like the old version more. and look at the KMenu! it seems lost in the wilderness.
- adredz, on 12/03/2007, -0/+0i totally agree with you! why can't they make it a little bigger than the other icons since it is the major icon! it looks like an ordinary icon to me...
- Zoiked, on 11/23/2007, -0/+0I couldn't agree more, atleast with microsoft there names are simple like Windows Mail, Windows Photo Viewer, Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer. Everything just makes since, I hope when KOffice comes out that they don't use KWord in the start menu, I hope they use Word Processor or something.
- schestowitz, on 11/25/2007, -1/+1Oh, thanks. I didn't realise this.
- Balinsky, on 11/27/2007, -0/+0I am a KDE guy. Currently using Fedora 7 KDE. I downloaded and tried KDE 4 rc1 live open suse and kubuntu live cds. My impressions were: The KMenu sucked (too small, at firsr awkward navigation) and you cant customize the panel yet so that was annoying
- dentarthurdent1, on 11/22/2007, -6/+5yes, i totally agree!!!!! this is the one thing that's keeping me from switching from gnome.
- Dylson, on 11/22/2007, -3/+2Dugg.
