- DBeta, on 01/16/2009, -4/+30I'm really impressed with KDE 4.2. They've done a great job of creating a pretty, smooth, and clean interface. The window borders, however, are simply ugly. That needs to be priority 1 in the art department. They've created a beautiful widget design and great black panels, it makes the borders stick out like a sore thumb.
- inactive, on 01/17/2009, -1/+14If you're running KDE, I highly recommend a distro OTHER than Ubuntu.

Quote: "We're trying to have a first working version out within the next couple of months, hopefully in time for the distros that ship in spring. So the applet won't ship with KDE 4.2 we're planning to release it individually so you (or your distro) can grab it in the meantime. We're looking at putting it into KDE 4.3 then."
I already tried it and it works reasonably well for a pre-release version. I'm still preferring nm-applet for now. - Ederion, on 01/16/2009, -1/+11I'm really looking forward to KDE 4.2. I've been using KDE 4 since 4.1 came out and have been missing the autohiding of panels very much. 4.1 has been a great experience, but 4.2 actually looks totally awesome. I can barely wait, but will wait for the official release!
- TheWindBlows, on 01/17/2009, -1/+11At first perception it can look that way, but after using it somewhat you'll noticed its not really.
- arcticblue, on 01/17/2009, -1/+9Gnome and KDE aren't distros. Those are desktop environments and if you are using Kubuntu, you are using KDE. You should check openSuse's implementation of KDE. It's a much more pleasant experience than Kubuntu. My experiences with Kubuntu have generally been pretty bad. I've installed it on a few computers to test out and each one had issues with stuff crashing in the panel on the first boot before I even had a chance to actually click on anything. It lacks a lot of polish.
- ommadawn, on 01/17/2009, -2/+84.2 and still no NetworkManager app/plasmoid. I can't see why this isn't a priority. Is it that hard?
- KAMiKAZOW, on 01/17/2009, -0/+6A Release Candidate is no Beta.
- MattBD, on 01/17/2009, -0/+5@tehjarvis
I think Sidux is a good choice for people who like KDE but prefer Debian-based distros like Ubuntu. It has the best implementation of KDE3.5 I have ever seen. I can't wait to see what they produce once they switch to KDE4. - KAMiKAZOW, on 01/17/2009, -0/+5It was just meant as a visual example how broken KDE packages in Ubuntu are.
- DreadKnight, on 01/17/2009, -0/+5Kde4 series is so much better than Kde3...
- KAMiKAZOW, on 01/17/2009, -0/+5I suggest that you look at some system monitoring app to check whose fault your problem is.

- kohoutec, on 01/17/2009, -1/+6My cat's breath smells like cat food
- jas2701, on 01/17/2009, -1/+5I've been liking KDE4 thus far, but I do miss the multi-row taskbar. I hope this makes it into portage quickly.
- Klowner, on 01/17/2009, -2/+6Anyone know if the memory leaks are getting cleared up yet? Which may or may not be nvidia driver issues, after a few days of use my KDE4.1 desktop would grind to a swap-thrashing halt :-/
Sure is looking nice though, good job KDE dev guys! - KAMiKAZOW, on 01/17/2009, -0/+4openSUSE also has a very good GNOME environment. Heck, Novell employs the guys who invented GNOME and is among Red Hat probably the biggest GNOME contributor. The sometimes-criticized "Slab" menu that comes with openSUSE can easily be changed back to the default GNOME one.
An openSUSE Live CD with KDE 4.2 can be found here: http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/
Live CDs with KDE 4.1 and GNOME are available under http://software.opensuse.org/ and who's still interested in KDE 3.5 can check it out at http://cgoncalves.blogspot.com/2009/01/opensuse-11 ... - KAMiKAZOW, on 01/17/2009, -0/+4Yeah, Oxygen had its problems in the past. They've been mostly resolved and I agree with you the window borders can be improved. However, I switched to the Oxygen window decoration anyway (I used Plastik in KDE 4.0 and 4.1, still using Polyester for widgets).
Oxygen window decoration with activated stripes and centered window title makes it look a bit like a shiny, modern evolution of the old Mac OS Classic (<=9) window theme. - chris062689, on 01/17/2009, -0/+4You can already do this, If you look in the settings for the taskbar, there's an option to force row limits, or something.
- dawndaemon, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3And the point of your post is exactly what in relation to kde 4.2?
- pip182, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3Yes, I do not like the borders in KDE4. They really need to change that.
- Vadi0, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3Upgrade to 8.10, then follow instructions on their website.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3KDE 1.x was on purpose somewhat modeled after Windows (9x at that time) to 1) make switching easier and 2) get the code released, care about self-made GUI guidelines later. However, during the years both diversified more and more and with the KDE 4.1's Folder View Plasmoid being the most ground-braking departure from the old desktop paradigm yet.
- Vadi0, on 01/17/2009, -3/+6Congrats to the KDE team. Unfortunately, I never really stuck with screenlets or google gadgets, so I am equally uninterested in the flagship feature of kde4, the "plasmoids" :|
- Sammi84, on 01/17/2009, -1/+4Have you tried 4.2? Or are you still basing your assumptions on 4.0?
- Klowner, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3Plasma is what is what was consuming all the ram, but sometimes X11 memory leaks have been isolated to certain apps + nvidia drivers.. so, that's what I'm saying.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 01/18/2009, -0/+2KDE 4.1 is not beta software. Ubuntu's KDE packages are just broken, so is Adept. Get the Live CD from http://software.opensuse.org/ and see for yourself how a non-broken and polished KDE release looks like.
BTW: You can't install KDE 3 on 8.10. - puelocesar, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2I heard that upgrading a *buntu from 8.04 to 8.10 would cause many nasty problems with that damn PulseAudio thing
- DBeta, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2I love the Oxygen widgets, and they conform to color styles great. The default gray does look a little oldschool, but it takes only a few seconds to tweak it to a more comfortable color. I haven't touched OS9 or earlier in years, so I hardly remember it, but hey, if it looks good don't worry about it looking a little like an old OS.
- ileftfark, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2HTOP forever!
- Jambi, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2"care about self-made GUI guidelines later"
Sadly, this lack of consistency has plagued KDE for years... there's some great underlying code there, but the average user (and a lot of us power users for that matter) aren't likely to use it if it's a bloody mess. - MattBD, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2I'm going to live with underground Grandma.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 01/17/2009, -1/+3Just FYI: At least the openSUSE KDE team backported autohide to their KDE 4.1.3 release.
- puelocesar, on 01/17/2009, -1/+3I agree with that. The problem is that the designer doesn't agree with the border, but the damn people called "old users" doesn't liked the original setup, because they can't find the active window.. Man, I hate all these bitching against new things and pushing old ideas into new things, they just break everything
But fortunately you can fix it. Disable window border stripes, and set window border color to gray and they will match the rest of the theme. - filereaper, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2I know NetworkManager is a must, but I am sticking to Wicd till NM is fully working with KDE 4.x series. Wicd has GTK and Python dependencies, so there should be no issues with KDE 4.x, I've been using Wicd on KDE 4.0 and 4.1 ever since.
Hope that helps.
cheers. - InThePants, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2roger that
- clickwir, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2I upgraded 3 systems, no issues.
- Skyview, on 01/17/2009, -1/+3If you want the most of KDE4 I can only recommend that you use ArchLinux with KDEmod.
Compared to Kubuntu and OpenSuse (11.0 + 11.1) ArchLinux w/ KDEmod wins hands down in all departments.
I started out with OpenSuse thinking it should be a good distro for KDE. I found a lot of annoyances and basically no community. When I ran into problems - there was nobody to help me. - TheWindBlows, on 01/17/2009, -2/+4A fully loaded KDE4.2 release canindate 1 isn't what I would call stable under Ubuntu 8.10 when using some widgets. Plasma crashes when i drag lancelot onto the Desktop. Hopefully stuff like that is taken care of before the final release. Personally say they might not make their planned release date.
Though KDE4.2 is very nice, but using it for a while some things just aren't right like how plasma handles spacing and a few other small things.
Anyone know how to get movie backgrounds, i know its possible in 4.2, but not there by default for some reason.
I'll probably wait for Jaunty or something similar to switch to KDE4.2.x - KAMiKAZOW, on 01/18/2009, -0/+1I'm not using the Oxygen widget theme solely because visual consistency with GTK apps can easier be achieved with Polyester.
I'm not worrying about the Oxygen window decoration. It's in no way a knockoff of the Mac OS 9 theme (I don't like knockoffs). I'm not even sure if the designer actually got his inspiration from Mac OS 9. - Hobo97, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1I played with Arch for a while but it lacks a lot of the really nice Debian tools and the pre-configured packages. While Pacman is great, anytime you have to make a package yourself its a PITA. I really don't want to have to write a package build and figure out dependencies. Arch needs a checkinstall or dpkg utility.
- DBeta, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1I just use the Plastik window borders. Works great. But the default just looks so old and ugly, you really need to have it good from top to bottom out of the box if you want to impress people. I need to hand a live CD to my mom, and have her fall in love with the look as soon as it boots up. I mean, if you are going to have that much style, why not go all the way?
- wedderburn, on 01/17/2009, -1/+2My thoughts on kde were always, we like windows but don't like the closed source company, so lets remake windows and add more features.
kinda like lets make a better windows - InThePants, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1Is it possible to go from Gnome Ubuntu 8.04 to Kubuntu 8.10 without blowing everything up?
- talkingwires, on 01/17/2009, -5/+6So, is this version "KDE 4", or are they still dicking around with alpha-quality software that's unsuitable for regular users but calling it version 4.0?
- f3n1x, on 01/17/2009, -1/+2just go to appearence>windows and remove the
[ ] blend title bar colores...
[ ] show stripes...
checks and it looks almost like plastik did - even better in my opinion.
the defaults suck though because it's exhausting to work with several overlapping windows which all look the same. they tried to copy from apple but failed - in this case. - clickwir, on 01/17/2009, -3/+4KDE 4 is coming along. I wish they had more developers or something to help get things straight faster.
When going from KDE 3.5 to 4, 90% of the options you had before... gone. I understand it's like a complete re-write and they have to add features, but having features that you just got used to being there and even XFCE has them.... KDE4 is nice but it really seems like it's going to take another 2 years before it's at the feature level 3.5 was. - bluechild, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1If you mean there is a desktop, a panel and a program menu, then yes :P
- InorganicMatter, on 01/18/2009, -0/+1KDE on Ubuntu? That's no one's fault but your own.
GNOME:Ubuntu
KDE:SUSE - KAMiKAZOW, on 01/18/2009, -0/+1Ah, OK. I don't experience this kind of memory usage, but I can at least give you the information that the NVidia drivers also cause Plasma-related problems for me. So far I got the least amount of problems with the 180.11.02 beta driver -- runs more stable than the newer release version for me. I also have a PC with Radeon graphics. I don't have any of these problems on that system.
