- markey, on 07/29/2008, -1/+49We're working very hard on Amarok 2 :) So it won't take very long until release of 2.0, but you are always welcome to test our alpha/beta versions (which are pretty usable already) and report bugs :)
- ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -2/+49"The release is dedicated to KDE's contact in Africa, Uwe Thiem. Uwe passed away after a kidney failure two weeks ago. Africa's new press contact for KDE is AJ Venter, a friend of Uwe's who stepped up on short notice to help with filling the gap Uwe's death leaves in the KDE community."
- McFossey, on 07/29/2008, -0/+36A pity though, that Amarok 2.0 has not yet been released. It's probably one of the most anticipated KDE 4 apps.
- kragil, on 07/29/2008, -1/+33Before all the whining starts:
Read this:

And this:
http://techbase.kde.org/Schedules/Is_KDE_4.1_for_y ... - lukas88, on 07/29/2008, -0/+26That's like trying to compare a desktop environment to an OS.

- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -1/+24GeForce 8 and 9 users can get a desktop effect framerate boost by doing some twiddling with the nVidia driver. See http://techbase.kde.org/User:Lemma/KDE4-NVIDIA for the step-by-step instructions.
- Deemo, on 07/29/2008, -0/+22Unfortunately for most diggers, 100% more from 0 is still 0
- clickwir, on 07/29/2008, -1/+16KDE is not linux. Linux is not KDE. KDE is a major, completely re-written desktop environment. Look how long Microsoft took to make UI changes to Vista, and they didn't make as many changes a KDE did.
- ingvildr, on 07/29/2008, -3/+15Its a real shame the nvidia drivers suck with kde4.1, slow as hell and i get graphical glitches with a 7600GT.
- m1zl3d, on 07/29/2008, -0/+12Instructions on how to upgrade/install:
1. Add deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubun ... hardy main to your /etc/apt/sources.list.
2. If you already have the kubuntu-kde4-desktop packages installed, simply type sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and answer the questions in which you are prompted. If you do not have kubuntu-kde4-desktop installed, simply type sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install kubuntu-kde4-desktop and answer the questions. Both of these options are to be typed at the command prompt.
If you're using Gnome (like me) and just want to test it out do the second method listed above. Once installed logout to GDM and under Sessions choose KDE.
Also, install kdeplasma-addons (sudo apt-get install kdeplasma-addons) for extra plasma stuff.
Edit: Here's a screenshot of the desktop as well. http://www.linux.com/var/uploads/Image/articles/14 ... - PhinnFort, on 07/29/2008, -6/+18now with 100% more secks!
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -1/+13My grandmother told me "***** off, I wrote that article!".
- Tribis, on 07/29/2008, -1/+9I emailed it to grandmother, she said it was so easy.
- clickwir, on 07/29/2008, -4/+11No, that's not "like"... it simply IS.
- jadrian, on 07/29/2008, -1/+8For those who want to give it a spin without having to install it, you can run it by booting with this Live CD:
http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/ - prorab, on 07/29/2008, -0/+7It's great to see that a progress is made on KDE! It seems that this is still not a polished version, but definitely something worth a try to see the new ideas in Linux desktop. When all major applications will have versions ready for KDE 4 it will be a killer desktop.
- kinghajj, on 07/30/2008, -0/+6I've had some problems with nvidia drivers, too, but I found something that helps a lot.
1. Right click a window title bar and click "Configure Window Behavior."
2. Click "Desktop Effects" (it's the default for me, actually.)
3. Click "Advanced Options".
4. Ensure that "Direct rendering" is checked.
5. Change "OpenGL mode:" to "Shared Memory".
6. Click OK until done. - ligyron, on 07/29/2008, -7/+13Is it better than Vista?
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+6Well, technically that's how you do it on Ubuntu... To be fair you should probably not give instructions that appear generic and use Ubuntu/Debian specific instructions (While it is the leading distro, us who prefer it not would like 'Linux' to stay distro neutral.)
- Mejogid, on 07/29/2008, -2/+8Guys.... he was joking...
- Stemp, on 07/29/2008, -0/+6I'm a gnome user, and you are just plain STUPID.
Stupid in fact was not what I was thinking but I try to be polite. - sebasje, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5@subrataberasubratabera: The announcement linked from this article has what you're looking for
@geoken: My ATi X1300 runs much faster than my Nvidia 7600GS, so yes, possibly. I've decided I'll until the Free ATi drivers mature so I can use them and say goodbye to proprietary video blogs - inactive, on 07/29/2008, -5/+10No...
Vista is at least a million times better than Windows 98 - Even if it does go slower on your older boxes, it is a lot more efficient (though it wastes efficiency on special effects by default) and a ***** more secure than previous Windows OS's - geoken, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Would I get improved performance if I moved to an ATI card? I'm currently running an 8800gts and am experiencing the performance issues people are talking about.
- m1zl3d, on 07/30/2008, -0/+5Yes I forgot to mention that. Thanks. This is for Ubuntu/Kubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04.
- billessig, on 07/29/2008, -10/+14Yes.
- kleverness, on 07/30/2008, -0/+4With that level of critical thinking I'm sure you will succeed in life...
- Axed33, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4You'd definitely see a performance improvement moving to an ATI card, but if you use compiz you'll notice more graphical glitches than with the nvidia drivers, and overall 3D performance isn't as good.
KDE4 doesn't really need compiz anyway, so if you want to use KDE4 as your desktop and don't use Linux for games I'd say go for it.
I just upgraded to a 4850 and am loving it. - bongo, on 07/29/2008, -3/+7I tried KDE 4 for a while, and found that it was not quite ready for mass consumption yet. There were a lot of applications that hadn't been ported from KDE 3 yet. It is pretty, though.
That being said, KDE 3 rocks, and is definitely better than any Windows product out there. - clickwir, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4You could have just hit the REPLY under each post. That way they don't have to guess if someone replied further down the page.
- FolkTheory, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4the official announcement - http://kde.org/announcements/4.1/
says in the Known Issues section "Users of NVidia cards with the binary driver provided by NVidia might suffer from performance problems in window switching and resizing. We've made the NVidia engineers aware of those problems. However, no fixed NVidia driver has been released yet. You can find information on how to improve graphics performance on Techbase, although we ultimately have to rely on NVidia to fix their driver."
techbase - http://techbase.kde.org/User:Lemma/GPU-Performance - subratabera, on 07/29/2008, -3/+7Someone please post KDE 4.1 improved and new feature list with screenshots.
- inactive, on 07/30/2008, -0/+3KDE3 is quite nice - it's not the best looking Desktop Environment, but I've never seen applications like Kate before (Multifile text editor with terminal) among some other nice things. KDE3 feels much more innovative to me than GNOME - I think I take Linus's pose on usability issues.
- clickwir, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3I don't know, but I'm in the same boat. With AMD/ATI doing so much better with open source and linux driver support, I would almost think you would.
- pixeleyes, on 07/30/2008, -0/+3Exactly where you would expect them:
Right Click on the desktop -> Install New Widgets -> From file... -> Dashboard: OSX Widgets - Zerophnx, on 07/29/2008, -1/+4KDE 3 is still a very reliable environment that works well on older machines as well as newer ones. Think I'll still with that for a while longer, the submenu organizing is much better than GNOME (it breaks the categories down further).
- zwaldowski, on 07/30/2008, -0/+3@gandhii: However is usually used to contradict a previous statement, or enforce the statement with a condition.
The more you know. - korvins, on 07/30/2008, -0/+3I will wait for Kubuntu 8.10, which will be LTS and KDE 4.10 mature enough by the time it is released.
I would recommend this to anyone not experienced or willing to spend some time testing it. - atdigg, on 07/29/2008, -1/+4I partially agree with you, except the last trollish line, if you really want to use a mature KDE use KDE 3.5 it works beautifully...
- LlamaKing, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Still has some work to be done, but its already looking great :)
- KAMiKAZOW, on 07/30/2008, -0/+2"Does Dolphin have a viable and usable tree-hierarchy frame yet, instead of just that 'Places' view?"
Yes - dougle, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2@Aquashark Your comment history says it all really, quoting linux hater all the time, there is little to hate about linux as everything is customisable, seems to me your jealous of linux and inept at the same time, what happened did X not start properly? couldn't find a driver? stop sniffing around the linux posts if you really hate it that much.
- srg13, on 07/30/2008, -0/+2More comprehensive categorisation =/= better. I'd rather go to Internet -> Firefox in my main menu than having to go through more sub levels.
But I hardly ever use the menu anymore. It's either a click on the dock (AWN) or with Gnome Do (Super+Space and then type three or four letters of the name and press enter). The latter method is great because it only takes a second or two, and you don't have to reach for the mouse. - jmantra, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2http://jmantra.com/duggdown.wav
- perfectska04, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2I've used GNOME for as long as I can remember, but KDE looks more tempting with every release cycle. However, from what I've read, it would be best for new converts like me to wait until k3b, amarok, koffice and the network app are fully ported to ensure a smooth transition from GNOME. I hope the devs keep up working on improving their vision, since it's about time for linux to have a truly modern desktop environment.
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2Yay :P
Keep them coming - I liked some of the stuff in KDE4 though it had some stability and speed problems... Ktorrent and Kcalc, and a few other KDE4 improvements were especially pleasant. - FolkTheory, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2the official announcement is pretty good and has plenty of pics:
