- tbranham, on 07/30/2008, -0/+12Wow. I might actually give this a try. I haven't used KDE since SuSE 7.0, but it looks like they have finally upped the ante.
- SolidSnak, on 07/30/2008, -3/+13Yay if only the damn nvidia drivers didn't suck so bad I would be able to experience it too! http://digg.com/linux_unix/NVIDIA_Screws_Over_Linu ...
- seanrtilley, on 07/30/2008, -0/+9I tried RC1 two days ago, and it was already quite usable.
Can't wait to try out the official release soon! - SmokedL, on 07/30/2008, -0/+6This is true.
However, the software world moves quickly. If you want to stay on top you cannot sit around rolling your thumbs. Which drivers where the best last year is ancient history now. What matters is how things stand now, and how they are shaping up for the future.
Nvidia badly needs to get moving on their binary blob at the very least, and really should get started working on open sourcing their drivers or releasing hardware documentation. If they don't do both they will lag behind and generate bad feelings. If they do neither they are apt to become as loathed in the *nix world as ATI was not that long ago.
I'm somewhat surprised that they have not acted yet. Linux is making huge strides in the embedded and UMPC market, and is making not inconsiderable headway in the desktop arena. Companies such as Dell are calling for hardware manufacturers to open their drivers. Both ATI/AMD and Intel now supply either full featured open source drivers, full hardware documentation, or both. There's been a flood of press releases from companies finally deciding to fully support Linux within the rules of the open source community.......
Meanwhile nvidia appears to have their corporate head completely buried in the sand. I wonder what they are thinking? - innovati, on 07/30/2008, -2/+8nvidia drivers have historically been the best drivers out thereā¦
- flubba, on 07/30/2008, -0/+5KDE FTW
- PFS1, on 07/30/2008, -0/+54.1 is an incredible improvement. I've already switched over my Eee, and I'll be doing my desktop machine too even though there is some sketchy support for dual monitors, no support for a different wallpaper per desktop and the vertical taskbar isn't too pretty. The rest is more than enough to convince me.
However, one feature that I desperately want is a containment that acts like the OSX dashboard. The plasma "dashboard", which consists of simply of the ability to bring the desktop plasmoids to the forefront, isn't enough.
I once read a post on the developers' decision to implement the dashboard in this manner. They argued that they wanted to fully change the desktop paradigm by making it the space where these widgets are used, rather than keeping the "icon repository" paradigm and hiding the widget functionality away in the typical dashboard fashion. I hugely agree with this. I cheered out loud when I read Seigo's post that desktop icons were being abolished in 4.1.
However, this is KDE- there should be choice too. I'd love to have a toolbox of plasmoids- a calculator, extra some folderviews, dicitionary lookup and such- available at the touch of a button without them having to clutter up my desktop. After all, if the destop is to be the new true "workspace", then it would be good have a way to put away the lesser-used plasmoids and keep the workspace clear for plasmoids that will be more important to your workflow. - geoken, on 07/30/2008, -0/+4Ars is lame because your reading comprehension is too low to understand that "will" (as in "..which WILL provide support for accessing Kontact data..") refers to a future event which has yet to transpire?
- prorab, on 07/30/2008, -0/+4Here is how you can install it in Ubuntu:
1) add following repository:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubun ... hardy main
(here is how you do it: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubu ...
2) type in the command line:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install kubuntu-kde4-desktop
Once everything is installed logout to GDM, coose KDE in Sessions and log in again into the brand new KDE 4.1. - spanglegluppet, on 07/30/2008, -0/+2Old meme is somehow already getting old.
- ommadawn, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1We've always seen NVIDIA keep up with the demand, let's hope they perform this time as well. Remember when NVIDIA users were first to drop XGL for visual efects because the driver had the necessary extensions built in?
- gooberbeans, on 10/04/2008, -0/+0Linux and KDE have "ruined" me for windows and mac, I can't hardly stand to use either one anymore. I think may need a Linux 12 step program just so I can work on windows and mac when I can't avoid it.
- anachreon, on 08/01/2008, -0/+0I love it. And I really hated 4.0, being a long time 3.5.x user. But 4.1 is truly good software. Nice work, devs. Nice work.
- kragil, on 07/30/2008, -2/+1Kontact does NOT use Akonaki yet! Ars is getting lame ;(
- Rafer, on 07/30/2008, -1/+0Here's another good KDE 4.1 review.

- iidoxe, on 07/30/2008, -7/+1***** you, two of my computers died while trying to run that.
