- fatas, on 02/25/2008, -0/+81Polish Linux gets it. Rather posting a text change log, the visual is the best way to advertise the changes.
- alexf, on 02/25/2008, -1/+38"The Luna applet for watching the Moon has been enhanced"
Oh, great, because I always need to make sure the moon is still there. - spyd3rweb, on 02/25/2008, -6/+40A tech article... YAY!
- geoken, on 02/25/2008, -0/+23Yeah. I read changelog and instantly thought "Great, some blog is reporting a changelog that's probably totally unchanged from it's official posting on kde.org. Refreshing to see a blog that actually adds something to a story rather than reposting it.
- renegadeafk, on 02/25/2008, -4/+26I've always been a gnome guy, but damn kde 4 looks sexeh
- SilverhammerMBA, on 02/25/2008, -5/+24I'm a Linux user and I don't get this article. When I think "revolutionary Linux desktop", I don't think of a Bejeweled clone, an app that shows me what the moon looks like, or an app that tells me what the lights on my keyboard already indicate. Some of the features seem interesting, but hardly what I would call revolutionary.
- libervisco, on 02/25/2008, -0/+17Indeed, it's overall a very good site too. Always has interesting articles and reviews.
- skyshock1, on 02/25/2008, -0/+15Of course it does.
- mikecx, on 02/25/2008, -3/+18KDE sure has come a long way but it's still lacking in two huge areas in my opinion. First, the start-bar or kicker or whatever it's officially called is still hideous. Everything else is starting to look really polished but that has not changed in a long time and yet it's the one thing that you always see.
Second, everything still has too many options, buttons, and tabs. I'm all for configuration but how about having a standard/advanced mode button for all the dialogs or leaving things like "widget x delay time, widget g interaction speed concordance with desktop alpha" in the config files with good documentation where people who want to can still find and tweak but normal users aren't bombarded with options they will never touch.
Just my 2 cents on how to make linux easier and more accepted by the end user. - patpi, on 02/25/2008, -4/+18Show me another DE in which you can
a) move clock between desktop and panel
b) put application runner on desktop
c) write fully usable widgets in Python, Ruby etc remembering thet everything on desktop is widget.
d) embed webkit engine in those widgets
kde4.1 will rock - Gaulven, on 02/25/2008, -2/+16You could put that background image on a Commodore 64 and it would look pretty sweet, too.
- TheG2, on 02/25/2008, -4/+16Looking at those images, it looks better than KDE ever has, but that being said, it has a long way to go, it still looks clunky and the design still lacks flow or direction.
- KillSudo, on 02/25/2008, -0/+11This is a nightly build showing off what will eventually become KDE 4.1 with still 3 - 4 months of development ahead. KDE4 was a start from scratch and will not mimic KDE 3.5.9 anytime soon. Almost all of the work is still happening below the visuals. The desktop will be usable for powerusers come KDE 4.1 and maybe some advanced normal users at 4.2. Give them time to work and you will see this project mature to your expectations. All of these builds have been for developers and the KDE community to start bitching about what still needs changing to be usable not for production use unless you like recompiling and breaking bits often on your workstation. Some people do enjoy this and love posting bug reports and this is who this is for.
- latova, on 02/25/2008, -1/+11ITS KBUNTU
- DutchHolland, on 02/25/2008, -1/+10Definitely going Linux
- Enron, on 02/25/2008, -1/+9Man, that keyboard indicator thing is totally amazing. I'm sold. This is nothing short of revolutionary.
- Noctem, on 02/25/2008, -0/+8s/revolutionary/evolutionary/
- positron, on 02/25/2008, -1/+8Critique my window manager's design and I'll threaten to assault you... Yeah, that's a real great way to be a welcoming Linux ambassador.
- mecenday, on 02/25/2008, -0/+7It's vital. Obviously you haven't seen the venn diagram of Linux users and Wiccans.
- kwilliam, on 02/25/2008, -0/+7Go to System Settings > Appearance > Fonts and change them to your heart's content.
- obxjdt, on 02/25/2008, -0/+6....don't worry, it's just you.....
- obxjdt, on 02/25/2008, -0/+6I use to like GNOME, but switched to KDE about 2 years ago. I find it easier to navigate. I still use IceWM for gaming to save on resources.
I mostly use GNOME now to show of Compiz to windows users. I think it runs better on GNOME than KDE. - kingofpenguins, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5Switch when you feel like you're ready, don't do it because "it's the cool thing to do" or "everyone else is doing it".
There's nothing else worse than a bad impression about something that will stay with you for a long, long time. - thripper, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5the only thing i *really* hate about KDE is the damn size of it (as in size on screen ). my laptop is on 1024x768 and can only do so much and in kde 4.0 my usable screen space was too small for daily use. I wish they made all those things smaller ... this is the only reason why GNOME is a winner for me. (even if it's slower than KDE )
that being said I think I'll switch to kde when my next laptop arrives. - n88n, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5Did you see that they almost have the kinks worked out of character map? amazing!!!11!!
- mfearby, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5I agree with the standard/advanced separation of configurables but I don't want to see the advanced options shifted to a config file only. At the very least they should be shifted to a dialogue box under an Advanced tab or an Advanced button. I don't want to have to tweak a config file just to change something I find annoying in the defaults. This is one area in GNOME which drives me absolutely crazy - you do things their way and if you don't like them, bugger off - you don't even get an option to change it. I'm sticking with KDE 3.5x for now but look forward to KDE 4.2 and beyond (I'm not sure KDE 4.1 will still be ready for a fusspot like me)
- cmost, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4They need to do something about kicker and soon. That prototypical, clunky shadow of what kicker used to be won't be tolerated by most users. They also need to provide a way to remove the configuration bauble from the corner of the screen. Whoever thought it would be a great idea to leave it affixed there permanantly obviously didn't bother to query the community first.
- regeya, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4I'm really looking forward to KDE 4.1. I'm hoping that all of you who used 4.0 and are looking forward to 4.1 have posted your bug reports and feature requests; otherwise, they'll definitely never get fixed ;->
In all seriousness, I'm very happy to see that both KDE and GNOME are getting serious about modernizing and integrating new features in their desktops, and as a KDE user I'm also glad they're continuing the trend of building frameworks and infrastructure. - inactive, on 02/25/2008, -2/+6Have people gone off the deep end? Luna??? Yes... this is *exactly* what I expected for KDE 4.0 :/
Also...
"General stability
The stability of this revision is very low. I experienced problems with windows scaling and drawing (in such case usually the minimize-maximize pattern used to fix it). Plasma was very unstable as well. It would crash completely in an unpredictable manner leaving a blank screen with no icons and toolbars whatsoever."
Yeah - thats another thing we would expect from 4.0... - thecheatah, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4I think its a nice clean font. Then again I dont really use Mac or windows.
- waspinator, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4is it polish as in Poland or polish as in polished?
- michuk, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3It's up and running, you just need some patience since we don't have unlimited bandwidth.
- obxjdt, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3WOW!!! I use Keramik, but mine is blue with animations (Compiz disabled in KDE). I agree, brown is ugly. But that's GNOME, not KDE.
- shaherazad, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/1807
Now you always have the mirror - joe90210, on 02/25/2008, -6/+9I tried KDE4 a few days ago and was not impressed at all, I don't know what visual makeover these people were talking about because the entire thing was UGLY and weird
- vertexoflife, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3The latest compiz has much better KDE integration than ever before. =)
- 0ddity, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3*Sniff*
Ahh, peer review in progress. - patpi, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3both :D
- Ender0910, on 02/25/2008, -1/+4The window stylings seem a bit inconsistant to me. The first few windows looked like they had a Vista style "glass" edge, whereas the last half looked mac OS-ish with the solid grey boxes. Is there a reason behind this disconnect?
- lovekudu, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3Aye - specifically, it's half black glass and green, and half old style grey backgrounds.
- mfearby, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3I hope they fix the bug whereby you can't enter character codes manually -i.e., ALT 233 to get an "é" (I'm typing this on Windows at the moment; had such a nightmare trying to configure my keyboard with KDE to support this - gave up in the end).
- MWeather, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3Can't help with the autohide, but Compiz works with KDE4, too. You don't have to use kwin's compositing.
- NeilM, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3Mirror?
- jellygraph, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2lookin good. may finally try kde 4 out with this release
- mikecx, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2Argh, I'm completely ok with using the command line and in many times prefer it. I've actually written a very basic version of the bash shell with job control, zombie process handling and such. Trust me, I understand the command line well enough to do most things.
In relation to your first point I guess I'll need an example. It's not often I see someone confused by the on/off button of a dvd player but something more complex, say setting the time, confounds a lot people because it's level of difficulty isn't just one button and done. If you were to make it one button that magically set it but have a place for the geeks to adjust the time zone, change the time to 12/24 hour format, and change the flashy speed of of the colon, I don't see a problem with that at all... besides the magic. - Rapax, on 02/25/2008, -1/+3Wow, looks beautiful. Really leaves Vista and Leopard in the dust.
Just one question: Has anyone figured out how to turn off those dark 'smudge' frames around desktop icons? - vertexoflife, on 02/25/2008, -1/+3I was a HUGE GNOME fanboy, tried KDE for a few weeks, hated it, went back to GNOME, then ended up going back to KDE just because it was so much more configure-able.
- JosephStalin, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2No, that's KDE. It's an official screen shot from the KDE 3.1 release:
http://www.kde.org/screenshots/kde310shots.php
I ran KDE from '98 to '06, I know what it looks like. I'm a Gnome user now. - dwbell, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2the plan was to remove the plasma config bauble from the corner when KDE4 was released to for the general public. I believe that is still the plan.
- DiggLive, on 02/25/2008, -1/+3*looks damn sexeh
