Seriously, software developers don't need to kiss the user's asses. If the Linux desktop keeps on tail light chasing it will never be "the year of the Linux desktop", since the free software desktop projects will be stuck on emulating the previous desktop paradigms of the current proprietary offerings while the proprietary developers advance new and exciting ideas in to their future desktop offerings. - TheWindBlows, on 07/06/2008, -1/+3The planned difference between KDE 3.5 and KDE4 is nowhere nears the cheap special effects between xp and vista. (desktop environment wise i know vista has a bit more security built into it than xp).
KDE4 is becoming pretty much a reinnovation of the way desktop's work.
Vista was just some things moved around and lots of gloss.
To be honest I am glad KDE4 is actually innovating because, KDE 3 reminded me too much of windows which was crappy. - dualscreenman, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1I was talking mainly in regard to the folderview desktop-icon implementation. It is fundamentally more powerful and flexible than the standard "icons on wallpaper" paradigm, but is at the same time just as easy to use. Yet, since the presentation is slightly different, this author is moaning about how the presentational difference will scare people, and how that is an indication that the Plasma developers are going down the wrong path.
I never brought Vista into this discussion, and from a desktop shell view not much has changed besides widgets. (Which are pretty cool on any platform)
Nice attempt at a strawman. This is hilarious. - estvir, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Except the difference between XP and Vista is not simply 'cheap special effects' and if you think Vista is just some things moved around you're a complete idiot.
New kernel, new codebase, new networking/audio/printing stacks, new driver model, new bootloader, etc.
Yeah, just cheap special effects, moron, go lie some more. - TheWindBlows, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1KDE4.x is becoming a great desktop environment. So far it is becoming very tempting to switch t it from GNOME, but i would like to see it mature just a little more before then. Since its a Beta with many new features being put into it the stability is quite weak.
- sirhomer, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1The fundamental difference is Vista increased the system requirements for Windows by eightfold (go and compare the offical system requirements of Windows XP and Windows Vista). KDE4 not only introduced many new fundamental and important features, it also improved the resource efficiency of KDE overall. I think this proves that better technology doesn't always need to use more energy.

You'd only get that if you believe that people disliking something is somehow wrong and that developers will always do the right thing, especially open source ones when it comes to use experience (Hahah).
I love the hypocrisy too. Vista, change != better compared to KDE4, change == better. Oh, and people choosing 3.5 over 4? Hello XP and Vista.
This is hilarious.
