- niallabrown, on 12/02/2007, -1/+39I'm glad they are taking the time to do it right. As much as it will be hard to wait.
- KillerJ59J, on 12/02/2007, -0/+20No. They promised the features for KDE 4, not KDE 4.0. KDE 4 includes KDE 4.0-4.9, just as KDE 3 includes every 3.x release. Most of the really cool stuff will come in 4.1... after developers make KDE 4 their default desktop and have time to experiment and work out the improved API and features. Remember, this is a _major_ structural change.
- miga, on 12/02/2007, -0/+18Thats true. Some people even wait till 4.1 to call it "right". Lets wait and see ;)
- CAPSLOCKISCOOL, on 12/02/2007, -0/+16KDE 4.0 won't have all the features that they have promised for KDE 4. They will come later in KDE 4.x. Regardless, KDE 4.0 will be a huge improvement.
- Ederion, on 12/02/2007, -0/+13Oh, the Christmas gift of the year is no more then? - But then again I guess I'd rather wait a while longer than getting a ticking bomb as a present. Nice to see they are really taking the time to make it good before they release it officially!
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -0/+10This ain't exactly a minor release.
- HerbertScrunge, on 12/02/2007, -0/+10 "The KDE4 release seems to be turning into something like the Vista or Leopard releases....Just delay after delay after delay."
The original release was scheduled for 23rd October, and was then delayed to 11th December, and delayed again to January 11th. So it's more like "delay after delay" :)
"I think they've been working on KDE4 since at least 2004."
The KDE4 branch was created in June 2005 with the release of Qt4.0 whose release, of course, is a prerequisite for staring KDE4. - KillerJ59J, on 12/02/2007, -0/+9I really doubt that, I'm sure this will be the last delay... KDE 4.1 will be the release that impresses, anyway. KDE 4.0 is just the initial sort of a 'developer-release', all the super-cool will come after developers outside the KDE team get more time and experience with KDE 4
- hockey, on 12/02/2007, -2/+9Not to flame but forget that thinking man. This isn't just some program. This is possibly on par as an OS release since KDE does so much more than just fire off programs and manage windows. Do we want a repeat of Leopard where bugs could wipe out files on the file system?
- PsychoticDude85, on 12/02/2007, -0/+7Don't judge KDE4 on pre-release builds, there's still a lot of work going on. It's also worth noting that a lot of things that are really impressive in KDE4 aren't really that visible, there are a lot of new frameworks which while not so obvious to the end-user will improve the applications etc running on KDE.
- cquilliam, on 12/02/2007, -1/+7Something tells me this won't be the last delay. I don't expect this to be out by at least February-March. I'm not complaining, I would much rather a smooth, stable kde. They should take all the time they need, there should be no pressure to release and un-finished product.
- Sairgem, on 12/02/2007, -0/+6If you're that impatient, just use the current releases. As for the rest of us, we'll wait for a stable release.
- darkNiGHTS, on 12/02/2007, -4/+10That's kinda sad...
- rekenner, on 12/02/2007, -1/+7You know, you can ... turn off Linux/Unix topics.
Problem solved, you faliure. - Narishma, on 12/02/2007, -0/+5I doubt any distro will have KDE4 as the default desktop until KDE 4.1
- skyshock1, on 12/02/2007, -1/+6So what was promised originally that is going to be left out of the initial release?
- KAMiKAZOW, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4Some of the features that will arrive in a later KDE 4 release are:
Kopete 1.0, most KDE-PIM stuff, GStreamer as Phonon backend, Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware as Phonon backend, the switch to WebKit, and a few other things. - Carburetor, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4Not nerds, geeks, and there's nothing wrong with it.
Actually, when you reach your twenties that's a good thing..
Besides, These days, some distros became so easy, the average redneck can use them. - baalzebub, on 12/02/2007, -2/+6Kool! i hope QT-4.x and KDE-4 will build on Slackware-12...
- protium, on 12/02/2007, -6/+9ewwww...OSX
- PsychoticDude85, on 12/02/2007, -0/+3It does, with ease. I've got KDE4 compiled from SVN on this Slackware box, you just follow the build instructions on techbase.
- MinaSulo, on 12/02/2007, -0/+2I said "I think this is a good delay, though. It needs to be USABLE before it can be released." The KDE team has a habit of improving, fixing bugs. Improving, fixing bugs. Improving, fixing bugs. There has to be some sort of median so they can release it.
You can think of me as impatient, and I may be, but that is not the point here. I don't want to use a buggy DE, but what they have is good (their plan, not the release). Chances are, they will fix the current bugs by the time for release, and then decide to create more features - which creates more bugs. This has been done in the past, so that is why I think it will happen now.
Bury me for making assumptions, but it seems somewhat logical this would happen. - KungFuJesus, on 12/02/2007, -4/+6What's wrong with OS X? I prefer linux but OS X is a great operating system...
- martyFREEDOM, on 12/02/2007, -0/+2There will be .tgz files for it not too long after release I am sure.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 12/02/2007, -0/+2OSX support for Phonon (the KDE4 multimedia API) will arrive with Qt 4.4. I'm not sure if we'll get sound support under OSX before that release.
- MattBD, on 12/02/2007, -0/+2I'm really looking forward to KDE4, but I'm using Kubuntu, and the next release (Hardy) is a Long Term Support edition, so they're unlikely to have KDE4 as the default desktop if there are any kind of issues with stability. I may use it anyway once it's out as previous alphas have been available for Gutsy, and no doubt packages will be available when it's released. I especially like the look of the Twitter widget.
- mozzep, on 12/02/2007, -2/+4Ah, terrific! I can't wait to use Amarok on OS X, and secondly, try out the newly revised KDE.
- dmoney22, on 12/02/2007, -2/+3dude its slackware of course itll build on it slackwares been around forever. doesnt slackware compile from source anyway?
- Carburetor, on 12/02/2007, -0/+1There's no algorithm here, most of us are just computer geeks that like reading stuff related to the great open source community
Besides, KDE 4.0 has a major changes, and i guess it gonna get lots of gnome fans (including me). - culturalsub, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Some advice to the folks that are eager to try it out: some of you might not be so familiar with the purpose of KDE 4.0 or its current status. If you're expecting KDE 4.0 to be the One Desktop To Rule Them All, you will be disappointed.
For the most part, KDE 4.0 lays the foundation upon which the KDE4 series will be built upon (notice the difference: KDE4 vs KDE 4.0). There has been a major overhaul of the KDE foundations in the run-up to KDE 4.0. Lots of innovative and exciting technologies have been developed: Phonon, Decibel, Solid, Strigi, Kross, Akonadi (for 4.1 only), Plasma, Oxygen, and others. However, beware that not all of these are mature yet or taken full advantage by the applications. That will take time. Therefore, if you are looking to be dazzled you should perhaps wait until 4.1 comes out.
Think of KDE 4.0 as a caterpillar: not particularly impressive yet, but one which in the fullness of time will mature into a beautiful butterfly! - tacojohn48, on 12/02/2007, -1/+2That much win in a headline might cause the internet to implode, it is a series of tubes you know.
- jimbren, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1I love to get good and drunk and play with my computer.
- monkeyboy7706, on 12/02/2007, -0/+1I think the plan is to allow kde4 to be installed as an alternative option. https://wiki.kubuntu.org/KubuntuHardyKde4 essentially for a while there would be two versions of kubuntu, a stable one and an experimental kububtu-kde4.
- bigsteve, on 12/02/2007, -0/+1Someone's getting a Bash for Dummies book for Christmas...
- regeya, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Me neither. Right now I'm using MPD + Theremin to handle my Ogg + FLAC collection. I feel a little silly running a daemon; hey, Apple, how about supporting the Open Source world instead of just using it for your own gain? How about releasing the QuickTime specs?
- InorganicMatter, on 12/02/2007, -2/+2You forgot $Ron_Paul.
- schestowitz, on 12/02/2007, -4/+4You can install 4.0 on a secondary machine and wait until 4.1 before working with it around critical tasks. You can also mix 3.5 and 4.0 (what I'm doing at the moment).
- stereoradiation, on 12/03/2007, -0/+0It's good that they take the time to get it right. Their development cycles are such that this release will be with us for a very long time.
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -8/+7Just in time for my 21st birthday!!!
I can spend the day legally drinking and playing with the various goodies on KDE 4. - tackle, on 12/02/2007, -2/+1I think it is a good move. From looking at the available screenshots, I dont think it is ready for a release yet.
- schestowitz, on 12/02/2007, -3/+1Good news. It'll be even better when it's made final.
Looking forward to January! - InorganicMatter, on 12/02/2007, -6/+2I tried KDE4. It was kind of nice, but generally unimpressive. I found KDE3 + Compiz-Fusion to be a more solid platform from the purely "usable" perspective that Mac guys view the OS world from.
- kedadi, on 12/02/2007, -8/+3I guess it's gonna be released in the same day with Kosovo's independence
- nubtard, on 12/02/2007, -11/+5I don't care about KDE, all I care about is amarok on windows.
- MinaSulo, on 12/02/2007, -9/+3Look, I want KDE4 to be as amazing as possible, but there comes a time when you just have to release it whether it is buggy or not. Those bugs can be fixed later. I think this is a good delay, though. It needs to be usable before it can be released.. I just don't want this to be a Duke Nukem Forever type of deal.
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -14/+0yeah maybe to linux nerds but regularly people dont give a crap
- jdhore1, on 12/02/2007, -16/+1The KDE4 release seems to be turning into something like the Vista or Leopard releases....Just delay after delay after delay. I think they've been working on KDE4 since at least 2004...Now, i do realize that this will be a much less buggy release because they're taking an extra month, but i just want it to be out already.
