- MikeMcG, on 10/10/2007, -3/+56I have to admit that KDE is starting to look really nice and clean. The UI that used to make me throw up is starting to look attractive.
- brasso, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Looks really nice, a step forward without any doubt.
- PhonicUK, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22Im more concerned about the speed. I recently switched over to Gnome from KDE due to the loading times.
- puelocesar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Peaple say QT4 apps consumes 20% less RAM then QT3 ones, and kde developers seems very preoccupied with performance, so I think kde4 (wich one promisses a lot) will be great in this point comparable with kde3.5 (wich one I really don't like)
- fafpak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Those above who say 3.5 >= 4.0...denial is a sweet thing but com'on...i) get a pair of glasses and/or ii) google the differences between qt3 and qt4 and the structure of the new KDE environment...
- gn0stik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Wow, very polished looking, I might have to load that on my ubuntu box to check it out in further detail.
- motang, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Slick UI, can't wait for it to be out of beta to use in my everyday computer.
- mikedoth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Even if I don't use it (probably will though because it's looking pretty sweet) it will further Linux, dugg.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I'm a Gnome Boy, but congratulations to the KDE devs, they're bringing nice competition to the FOSS desktop environment scene and fueling healthy emulation. KDE4 does look neat, now we need more benchmarks to prove everyone an OS can look nice and be lean at the same time *cough*not like Vista*cough*
- pingveno, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I keep hearing a lot about an improved load time with Qt 4 and general improvements. Feel like switching back?
- Diznario, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You might want to try the OpenSUSE "KDE Four Live" CD. They've already updated it for Beta 2: http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/
It's a live CD, so you don't even need to install anything this way. - T8erT0T, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Wow, it's looking pretty sweet. And I have to really credit the developers. It's amazing how far KDE has come in such a short time.
- StealthTomato, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Try Keramik or some other theme then.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Hopefully it'll be this pretty once 4.0 is out... http://pinheiro-kde.blogspot.com/2007/09/ok-its-time-to-show-somthing-more.html
- techmaster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The graphical enhancements are not that special. The biggest enhancements are actually in the functionality, considering they are re-writing the whole system under QT4 and restructuring the way the whole environment works. It's FAR from being "just KDE 3.5 with enhancements".
- Tsiolkovsky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The theme is very nice. So far I like it all very much. And the best thing is that it is not just looks. It is also the technologies behind it like Phonon and Solid that make it even better. I think that this hidden technology in KDE 4 is what is the most important and will make KDE 4 even more exciting.
- fafpak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I love how Beta 2 (0.4) of the live CD is actually smaller than Beta 1 (0.3) in file size. This could probably mean a plethora of things such as KDE code clean up/optimization etc etc...I'm getting giddy with excitement already!
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5For us lazy people who wanna test out KDE 4 functionality....is there a development distro out there that has the latest KDE 4 pre-installed?
Would love to test it out in KVM. - TehDoctor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4QtCurve.
- Tyr7BE, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9I had to digg both you and that democracy guy up. The default desktop what with its plazmoids and all is really sexy. Like best in show kind of sexy. Unfortunately they've done nothing to spruce up that hideous plastic-like QT theme, and Amarok still looks like my ass. Overall I'm glad they cleaned up the desktop, but their qt themeing really needs work, and Amarok, while full of features, has a UI that is beyond help.
- skyshock1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Anyone seen what kind of memory resources it's using right now? Comperable to 3.5? Or does it like to hog RAM?
- oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Since it is beta, I like to think that the nice bits are the nearly finished bits, and the ugly bits are the bits that aren't done yet. e.g. the kicker in those shots is virtually non existent, worse than KDE 3.5, therefore i would deduce that they just haven't done that bit yet.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3BSD to Apple: We want our code back.
- PhonicUK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Ive tried *box etc, but too minimalist.
I don't mind a bit of pretty and bloat, beefy machine to cope with it. But KDE never quite seemed to justify the loading time against the pretty. Gnome is ready in a few seconds even with Fusion etc... - antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I hope with the prettiness, it is still fast and smooth.
- postaldave, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5hopefully they will change that fuggly default clock.
looks like a nice mix of OSX and win98 with a tab of vista.
they really should work on function over design, 3.5 is still kind of flaky. - Daisuke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3it's maybe a little soon for that (most would probably have beta 1 installed if at all) but wait a week or so - this is too sweet a release for many distros to pass up :)
- Aldrenean, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Have you seen the mockups for the new Amarok interface? It looks snazzy.
- skyshock1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Speed? http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/
- pingveno, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think beta packages are available for Ubuntu.
- buggu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I prefer Gnome's look to KDE3 anyday, but KDE4 is really ramping up in the design department. For example, their default set of toolbars now come with a few, most essential icons with text (the way toolbars are supposed to be designed). Compare that to KDE3 where there were often two toolbars stacked on top of each other, filled with ambigious icons. It's true that Gnome did this before and KDE4 has a lot of catching up to do in the design department (this is the first release where they are following HIG), but the lead developer of KDE4 really has the design issues with KDE nailed and he gave a good presentation about it during the last aKademy, what remains to be seen is how the entire community adapts to his views.
- jdoo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I bought a macbook and switched to OSX but I still miss KDE. 4.0 looks great!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2is it out to install yet or test?
- mikewhite314, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Every time I've tried KDE Plastik is what turns me off.
- buggu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The Plastik-like theme you see is actually Plastik. It's one of the default themes included in a default QT4 install on any environment. The new Oxygen style that is being developed (and still undergoing many changes and improvements) looks nothing like the dull and dreary style that has come to represent KDE's look - Plastik; though it has a few issues of its own.
- puelocesar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2But one of plasma's objectives is exactly be far more customizable :P There won't be panels, launchers as separated programs like now, but it will be everything Plasma Widgets
Anyone who knows scripting will be able to make other panels, launchers, clocks, etc..
And that taskbar and the them are VERY far from final - puelocesar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Common, did you saw that: http://pinheiro-kde.blogspot.com/2007/09/ok-its-time-to-show-somthing-more.html ?
The artwork is far from final.. And that target artwork from Nuno do not seems imposible to implement - mossblaser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My only two bugbares with KDE is the organisation of the K menu and the poor dual display management. Hopefuly they'll be addressed - either way look'n good!
- bichenoubi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yep, I'll do that too tomorow. Strange feeling it is leaving Linux.
It's kind of ironic I waited for it for 3 years and the day it will come out, I'll be now using Mac OS X. Hopefully I will have the courage (and the patience) to try to install Linux on it later. - Navito, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://www.nuno-icons.com/images/estilo/
- ElitistSnob, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Hilarious that you've been dugg down for speaking the truth.
- Giga, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I get sick of all the comments that keep on using "common" as "come on". Your comment isn't exactly accurate in the usage "c'mon" but at least it is an attempt in the right direction. Thumbs up to you.
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/c%27mon - fyanardi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The default looking of KDE 3.5.x is really ugly (Plastik style + Crystal icon), but my KDE looks far better with Polyester + crystal project. And I don't really like GNOME because whatever style it takes (even though so many pretty styles), the widgets always look very big and waste my small screen size (hey I only have a small 17" CRT). But for me, still, choosing one after another only based on appearance is just wrong, you still must see the technical aspect (bu yeah, for users, they never care how good the technology is, as long as it looks good, they'll choose it) Anyway, I've to admit that the human style introduced by Ubuntu is the best GNOME style since GNOME 1.x, it's so slick and beautiful.
- puelocesar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1correcting:
And that taskbar and the theme* are VERY far from final - kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4http://xfce.org | http://xubuntu.org | http://zenwalk.org
- maybeway36, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Good old Kolourpaint :)
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3KDE is nice but I just don't like the look & feel of QT apps. All the really good stuff is GTK so you might as well just use GNOME.
- trenchfever, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3KDE always, looks pretty on the screenshots, its only when you actually start using it that you realize that the UI elements feel flaky and consumes a lot of real estate needlessly. Gnome is more professional and feels solid. Kudos to the KDE guys nevertheless. Keep up the fanaticism for all is good at the end of the day.
- Hermmunster, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Everything I've seen of it demonstrates it is just kde 3.5 with enhancements. It is not a big deal.
