- Cmain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Remember this is only Alpha 2.
- Sairgem, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The default look of kde/gnome is always ugly. The beauty is you're not stuck with it. http://www.kde-look.org http://www.gnome-look.org
- sishgupta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Thats not true at all...
Gnome and KDE are both desktop environments. They are a compilation of a set of programs which are considered by the project as a necessary or useful desktop application. They include window managers, window decorators, widget frameworks, productivity applications as well as general functionality applications (multimedia frameworks, games, panels). One may have more apps than the other, but both generally have at LEAST one app for each function.
Gnome is NOT more like the default WM for a tux box.
The benefit of gnome over kde is personal. It isn't just asthetics, but it plays a role. The other part is you might prefer one set of applications to another. - SlicerDicer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Well from previous usage of the last alpha it was faster than vista even with full debug mode and less memory footprint.. Thats one of the major benefits of switching to QT4 :)
Enjoy. - sishgupta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I can't wait to see this with the new KWin compositing.
- Bread, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I think it looks very slick, a no frills appearance. Be interesting to compare the memory footprint of this so called 'ugly' desktop environment to Windows Vista ;-)
Intrigued to know where they're going to place the clock, unless that applet has been removed for the purpose of these screenshots. - stephenwq, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6It is a bit plain looking, though its only alpha.
If you don't like it, remember that most distributions will theme it at least to the extent of changing colours. If you don't like that either, then theres always kde look, as mentioned.
eg. Fedora, Kubuntu, Suse etc. - Irco, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I find it quite pretty actually...but I've always loved KDE.
what is it that you find ugly ..exactly? - stauken, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I can't live without my KDE. I like it to a point it's really preferred as a working environment over windows.
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4KDE 4 is actually more efficient than KDE 3 if you don't turn on compositing. My benchmarks always showed KDE had a slight edge on GNOME (if both are pure) and this should increase any lead here.
There are also massive changes in framework. More than anything KDE are producing a complete API that can be used on Linux, Windows or Mac flawlessly. - leksdraven, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I like KDE. I like GNOME. But why do they have to name everything K-this or G-that?
Looking good though! - jshabad00, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Live CD didn't work so well for me... anyone else give it a try yet?
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That system setting panel has been in KDE 3 for about 10 years now. They have only cleaned it up slightly.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Honestly I'm not a big fan of KDE, that is KDE 3, but this is simply an amazing change between the two, very very great.
- creamboat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually you meant to say, "then there's always GNOME."
- Gogogo111, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2While I think it looks really, I dugg you up cuz its an opinion.
- TechCF, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I don't revolution, I need a graphical user environment that reacts when I click something.
- Irco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yeaaah, I never wanted it to be OSX though.... you see I think the KDE developers want KDE 4 to be the inflection point that will make the linux desktop stop following the others..I love being able to customize everything so I can be as much functional as possible and that's what kde gives me. At this point is not fair to compare some screen shots of the alpha release with anything...is just people have such high expectations, and screen shots of the default desktop look is not going to fulfill them. Give it time.
- qbproger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I tried it too, yea I didn't think it worked all that well either. The desktop would load, but almost everything would crash after that. It is only alpha though.
- oobuntu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3dude, its in ALPHA stage....plus the beauty of kde is the customisability. the ability to pimp your desktop is immense
- QuantumAvatar, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6Doesnt look terribly revolutionary. Was hoping plasma would add some extra Kazzzam if you know what i mean.
- arobicha, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I've always found the default options of KDE to be very bulky, and even upon some tweaking I find it lacking in something... It's hard to pin point what makes a GUI snazzy, but I think we can all agree that it's definitely no OSX. What's most important however is irrelevant to it's looks, it's what it DOES that matters most. I'll sacrifice a good looking GUI for functionality any day.
- queraxus, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6Not at all. I'm not anti-linux. I just think that's really ugly.
- subbzzz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5Not exactly, KDE has more Usable Applications (by Default) and the UI is more responsive.
- eqisow, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Kick ass!
oh wait ... - bh1nd3r, on 10/11/2007, -12/+11http://www.kde.org/announcements/visual_guide_images-4.0-alpha1/desktop.png
Am I the only one who finds it ugly? - nismerf, on 10/11/2007, -7/+6KDE is more like a user desktop with lots of apps, Gnome is more like the default window manager for a linux box or server. Gnome or KDE are not really better or worse, just used a little differently.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1But why you may ask.
I believe its through the magic of tight ass developers. Microsoft and Apple both have lots of money. this means they give their developers top quality free computers. So when a dev makes a piece of code and tests it he thinks wow that was blazing fast.
Now many Linux devs are still pretty much using computers that were not even state of the art in the 1950's. This means when these devs test a piece of code, they begin to cry as it runs at a glacial pace (very slow) so they go back and make it faster and smaller. Still too slow, try again, and again. Now get more devs to help and keep trying.
For those of us with computers bought in the last 20 years, we WIN :-) - azazel00, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5Now all they need to do is drop the K off every app. Seriously, konkeror, amarok, and all the other k's, kind of make you think it's just a bunch of kids that threw in a desktop environment together.
It has great potential, but they need to start taking themselves seriously. - eqisow, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Right...
Troll. - Garfunkel, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1sweet, now that my download quota will reset tomorrow i will download it and compile the source! I am really looking forward to this! plasma is tons of fun and the new dolphin file browser is nice. I can't wait for the final release.
- codyfrisch, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2Hey I happen to agree, the text looks blah. The window interfaces look plain. It really does just look ugly to me.
- ptFoe, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2Yeah that is why KDE dumped Konqueror for a Naulitius like file manager in Dolphin.
- nahtanf, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3What is the main benefit of KDE in comparison to Gnome? Is it all just esthetics's??
- ostracize, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1FantastiK
- ravi7791, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1Nice. Settings reminds me of Sys Pref on the Mac while the other shot looks like a baby of Vista and XP.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -13/+3Someone beat you to it by 12 (and 11) minutes... http://digg.com/linux_unix/KDE_4_0_Alpha_2_now_out . As long as it makes the front page though...
- chainz, on 10/11/2007, -14/+1Kewl
- queraxus, on 10/11/2007, -20/+6That's uglier than Windows 95, and that's saying something.
