Not Found - amfantasy, on 05/07/2008, -2/+33KDE 4.0.x is stable, the correct word everyone is looking for is feature incomplete.
- CoolGoose, on 05/07/2008, -4/+21Don't start another useless flame-war.
- hamobu, on 05/07/2008, -1/+16Why do people think that big fat task-bar, or two task-bars (one on top and one on bottom) are attractive? Some of us have small screens and would like to see more of our applications. I know that I can customize (which I do) but still. IMHO WM should get out of the way and leave room for applications.
- maninalift, on 05/07/2008, -0/+14I am so dumb. It wasn't till I read this comment that I understood why the release had been dubbed "file not found". I was thinking 'that's not a very positive title'.
- phatboye, on 05/07/2008, -5/+18So is KDE on a monthly release schedule now with 4.0.x?
For anyone who hasn't tried KDE 4.x yet, i'd suggest sticking with 3.5.x for now, KDE 4.0.x is too unstable. - kingofpenguins, on 05/07/2008, -2/+14I dare you to try to use Windows or Mac without touching the keyboard even once. It'll never happen.
- hamobu, on 05/08/2008, -0/+11Must be your period or something.
- dualscreenman, on 05/07/2008, -0/+10I've not had Plasma crash on me since KDE 4.0.1. KDE 4.0.4 is quite stable. If you can't live without certain customization options, however, you may want to wait until KDE 4.1.
- jemminger, on 05/07/2008, -1/+11mental transcript of viewing the desktop screenshot:
"nice, looks nice... [scrolls down...] NO! WHY GOD, WHY?" There's always this god-awful too-tall taskbar! why does it have to be so big? I'm not 100% sure but I think it's usually KDE that comes this way by default. - kingofpenguins, on 05/07/2008, -1/+10He's probably referring to how Nokia bought Trolltech. They now own Qt, but not KDE. They're separate projects, and no one person or company owns KDE.
- amirman, on 05/08/2008, -0/+8is it as customizable as the last KDE yet? i like KDE's apps a lot but i can't stand that HUGE panel. i prefer a very small thin panel that doesnt hog up my screen space.
- databeast, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7Absolutely; the new Eye candy is kinda fun and shows promise for future functionality; but that'sjust it, the funcionality is just not there. So long as I'm running a KDE3 version of Kontact, I just dont see the point in firing up KDE4 as a desktop environment yet. But, the same was the case for KDE when it came out.
Right now, the people that need to be spending most of their time in KDE4 are application developers. Once all the major apps (beyond dolphine and konqueror) are ported to fully use KDE4, that's when the rest of us will move.
This doesnt stop me logging into a KDe4 session every so often to check out updates, but likewise, it doesnt stop me from logging /out/ of KDE4 so I can go back to my own customized desktop layout I'm used to - Nalin, on 05/08/2008, -0/+7In my opinion, one of the most annoying things about KDE 4 is how almost none of the widgets in the task bar resize correctly when you make it smaller. The biggest offender is the time/date widget. The bottom portions of it get cut off. And sometimes they even wrap around to the top of the screen. I hope they fix it soon (If not in this release. That would be great.)
Also, they really need to add a desktop widget of some sort that brings back the old desktop functionality. I can't stand how it makes an individual widget for each file on the desktop. - blooby, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6According to TFA, KDE is on a monthly release schedule with 4.0.x
- shakin, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6I've been using KDE 4.1 nightlies for a few weeks and it's quite good. I bound the run dialog to Ctrl+Space and use that as my application launcher. I don't even need a bottom panel. I enjoy the new features in the KDE 4 version of apps like Kate, Dolphin, and Konqueror. Oxygen is a killer widget set.
- amoeba, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6it looks great but I miss right-click functionality such as 'extract here' etc...
- dualscreenman, on 05/07/2008, -3/+9Kubuntu packages are available: http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0.4.php
Kubuntu has Qt 4.4 packages in hardy-backports as well. - yetAnotherCroc, on 05/08/2008, -1/+6Eh???? Care to explain your line of thinking? I'n my mind its more like: Windows Vista- Hillary Clinton (Thinks it has a God given right to rule and will pull any and all shenanigans to gain or keep domination) OSX - Barack Obama (Different from Windows/Hillary, a lot more human and adapted to the general voter/user.) Linux - Ron Paul (Freedome, right to run your own life/computer, small government/licensing, grass roots movement.) Of course one might argue that comparing Operating systems and presidential candidates is really dumb.
- ferrariman60, on 05/07/2008, -1/+5What? What's Nokia got to do with KDE 4.0.4?
- maninalift, on 05/07/2008, -1/+5Architecture astronaut and proud.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5No, that just makes you a ***** retard.
- dualscreenman, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4It's called the "Folder View" widget, which will be included with KDE 4.1.
- benplaut, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4For KDE, that's a bit ironic.
- TheSeeker11, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3I'm guessing (hope) that it can be reduced as it's easy enough to do on KDE 3.5.9; if not I'll be none too happy as it's the last thing I'll want to see on my 1280x800 laptop screen.
- protium, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3well 4.0.3 has the ability to reduce the size of that panel.
4.0.4 still has a lot of work to go, not nearly as customizable as kde 3.5.x. - td04impostor, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3I guess that by keyboard you mean command line.
Asus Eee PC runs Linux and i don't think you need a keyboard to use it.
My Router runs Linux, and I never used a keyboard to configure it.
Bla bla bla. - 321george, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2It's stable but not everything is ported yet (still waiting for Amarok 2)
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2What makes you think it's not the laptop?
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Hah, I got the same error myself. :D
- dualscreenman, on 05/08/2008, -0/+24.0.x releases aren't focused on functionality, but rather on releasing bugfixes.
Feature development is going on in the main KDE 4.1 branch, which will be released at the end of July. - int19h, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Every time I've tried KDE4 I've ended up reporting at least one crash.
- TheSeeker11, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1That's cool. I'm using Debian Sid at the moment so by the time KDE 4 hits the unstable repos, it should be good to go.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -2/+3It's an experiment released prematurely. Get over it. It's actually getting pretty good.
- tripzero, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1meh
- oobuntu, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1kubuntu doesn't appear to have it in the repos yet :( still on 4.0.3
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2Just shoot for customization. When we complain about how XP looks the Windows users can say UXtheme or WindowBlinds so we reserve the right to use the same sort of excuse.
- Giga, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1It can sort of be reduced at the moment, but the icons don't scale well yet and the clock doesn't scale at all - it gets cropped.
- Tacobake, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1woah, somebody's charming. I have tried KDE 1.x, KDE 2.x, and now it looks like KDE 4.x is unreliable too. Everytime I try KDE something breaks, I will stick with Gnome, thanks.
- oobuntu, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1konqueror seems crashy when browsing smb shares, apparently some bugs are resolved in 4.0.4 though according to bugs.kde.org
- oobuntu, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1discovered that gb.archive.ubuntu.com didn't have them, while archive.ubuntu.com does. thats a bit dodgy...
- tripzero, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1KDE4 had high hopes but they are well on their way to meeting them. It's not going away. It will only get better.
- Ademan, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2neither KWin nor metacity, nor xfwm4 (the window managers of the 3 most popular desktops) provide the panels that you're bitching about, it's the desktop environment, not the window manager that you should be complaining about, and besides, it's all just default settings... you can easily resize the panels, create more, remove some, whatever.
- Jareth86, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Oh my god, this is awful! I know their motto is "never look back", but unless the suckery is fixed, I may not switch to 4.* untill 3.5 is no longer supported in 2009. Way to go KDE. I didn't think it was possible to make Vista look good. This must be the glitchiest, bloated piece of garbage I've ever seen in the Linux environment.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1Heh... I have to admit that took a few more seconds than it should have.
- mohtasham, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1My roommate doesn't know much about computers. She was complaining the other day about windows. I think kubuntu 8.04 is in a good stage for a user like her to be used. I'm going to install kubuntu 8.04 on her new laptop as soon as she gets it.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1Okay, and it was a competition since?
- Giga, on 05/08/2008, -1/+0You mean like playing FPS games? I'd like to see you try that without a keyboard...
- dualscreenman, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1Only newfags:
